Well, you've read the notes, the notes said farewell and hello, and now it is time for you to post until the farewell and hello cows come home.

Good morning, all! I slept well last night and I credit that to my neti pot, which cleared my sinuses very nicely.  I was having a wonderful dream when the phone rang and now, 30 minutes later, I remember nothing about it.

I'm gingko take the laundry to the laundromat, then board a bus and head to a large supermarket several blocks away.  On my return I will put the laundry into the dryers, put away my groceries, and tidy the apartment.  The rest of the day will be given to Trumpet 4.

Best New Year's Eve? 1973, I think.

The duvet is in the dryer. It was a cold wait for a bus and a successful trek to the market. There was another long cold wait for the return bus, which was driven by a jerk who is -  I am guessing - a trainee: slow bus, lousy stops and unsure how to navigate the controls for the handicapped; in short, a total failure.

Still, I am home in one piece.  I believe I saw James Lapine in the laundromat. Smeone who looked like him was dropping off their laundry.

I really enjoyed reading about the kids' rehearsals.

But I totally misread one line. You said something like "Person 1 and person 2 are doing a duet, Agony". And I read it as "Person 1 and person 2 are doing their duet.  Agony".

But then when you went on to say how much fun it was I read it again. :)

Favorite New Years Eve would definately be one during my high school years. I would always go over to my friend Dave's house. Play cards with his parents, stay up late watching old movies on tv or listening to his short wave radio trying to find stations from various far away countries, and of course ringing in the new year at midnight.

I do remember one New Year's Eve that I'd rather forget. I woke up at about 4:30 on Dec. 31, 2010, with grotesque pain. Drove myself to the ER. I knew it was a kidney stone.

It turned out to be three humungous kidney stones. While they were looking at the CAT scan, they noticed a mass on the other kidney, so they kept me overnight. I spent that New Year's watching Saturday Night Fever, a movie I had never seen before, from an uncomfortable and fairly cold hospital bed.

Many of you remember all of this. The lump was cancerous, but mercifully benign. Still, I'm glad I woke up this morning after eight hours of peaceful sleep.

Kaye Ballard was on The Ed Sullivan Show the night that Frances Farmer made her return to show business on June 30, 1957.....along with The Everly Brothers, The University of Georgia Glee Club, The Kirby Stone Four, and Bonnie Guitar.....and many others.

I'm not the doctor. I just know I didn't have to do anything after it was removed. No chemo, no radiation.

What does that mean -- cancerous but benign?

In common usage (i.e., everyone but really pedantic oncologists), it means that you've got an abnormal but contained mass of cells growing someplace, as opposed to a malignant growth that can invade neighboring cells and directly disrupt organ function. Technically speaking, doctors only classify the malignant types as "cancerous" growths. (cue my parents' wailing "see? You could've been a doctor after all!")

Glad to hear that all went well, John G., and may you have many more less eventful new years in good health!

TOD - New Year's Eve 1982.  Richard and I had been in New York City since the evening of Christmas Day and had already seen 7 Broadway shows.  On New Year's Eve, we had dinner at Dish of Salt (now Utsav) on 46th St. and saw EVITA.  About 11:30 we went outside right in front of our hotel on Seventh Ave. and watched the ball drop.  We weren't right in the thick of the Times Square crowd, but close enough.  We then turned around and watched the fireworks in Central Park.  We flew home on New Year's Day.

Another memorable New Year's Eve was 2003, when Rob was a senior in high school.  He went to what we thought was going to be an overnight lock-in with a youth group at a local church.  We got a call about 10:30pm that he and his friend Chris had collided during a relay race and Rob's glasses frame had cut his eyelid and the nurses among the chaperones thought he should go to the ER.  We met them there and rang in 2004 while Rob had stitches.  Because he had turned 18 a few months earlier, we were kind of ignored by the hospital staff, but Rob was glad to have us there.

Amen to that, so glad they caught it when they caught it.

The things you learn while researching completely other stuff:

Actress Betty Beaird, who played Julia Baker's neighbor and best friend Marie Waggedorn on the old 1960s tv series JULIA, was the person responsible for introducing Lily Tomlin to Jane Wagner, Lily's partner of 40 years.

TOD: I abandoned the idea of having a wild and crazy time on New Year's Eve a long time ago.  There is just something about enforced jollity that is begging for failure.  The Lovely Wife and I have had a long tradition of just snuggling in at home with a bottle of bubbly.  And several movies on DVD that we want to see.  This year we shall not vary the tradition.

oh! You could make what I'm taking to the party tonight, it's a vegetable pizza appetizer.  You take crescent roll dough and spread it on a cookie sheet and bake it.  Then you mix cream cheese and dry ranch dressing mix and spread it on the cooled crust. Then you spread  chopped red and yellow bell peppers, green onions, carrots and broccoli on top.  You chill for an hour and viola!   My sister in law made it at Christmas and it was totally addicting

My best New Year's Eve was probably 1980 in San Jose, Costa Rica with my then college room mate, Maritza.  We went to a couple parties early then at midnight shot off fireworks, said a prayer to the Virgin Mar and sat down for a feast.  The whole trip was wonderful and I'm so thankful that in the last year Maritza and I have reconnected on facebook.  It's like we never missed a day of being in touch.

Tonight I'm going to a party about 6 blocks from home.  It's the usual group of friends, a really nice group of people I truly enjoy being with.  We're doing a pot luck, will have dinner of some sort and will be doing our annual white elephant which is always extremely funny.   I got one of the awful traveling trophies last year, and must go find it and wrap it.  There are usually some good gifts, but I tend to take home the true white elephants.

I was wondering what are ANY DR"S favorite MOVIES AND WHY???

I'll mention three, all of which involving dancing.

--The original Japanese Shall We Dance (not the lame American remake), because it showed someone following the passion of his life
--The Band Wagon, because dancing doesn't get any better on screen than Fred Astaire and Cyd Charisse "Dancing in the Dark"
--The original Hairspray for the sheer exuberence of the dancing and working in a message about humanity

Topic of the Day:

My favorite (and most memorable) New Year's Eve was when I was in New York in 1995.  We were supposed to have tickets to Patti LuPone's one-woman show that had extended to New Year's Eve, but the extension was cancelled.  A bunch of us instead got tickets for a special end-at-midnight performance of "Stomp" in Greenwich Village.  It was fantastic!  We didn't get back to Times Square until about a half hour after midnight but fortunately a lot of people were gone by then.  We still saw a LOT of drunk people staggering around a few had thrown up...and cops were everywhere.  Good times.

I was catching up on epsidoes of JULIA last night...just love that show, although some episodes are a bit forced...and the actors tend to scream their lines in the earlier episodes...but tons of wonderful guest stars appear, and Diannah Carroll is truly one of the most beautiful women ever!

And she is still beautiful.

She's a recurring character on "White Collar" and she even got to sing on the show last season.  She's still got it!

Are you sure that the crescent roll dough is vegetarian??  I recently got some Pillsbury pie crust (just unroll it into a pie pan) and it has partially hydrogenated lard.  And some (formerly) Hostess products use(d) lard in their cream fillings.

It all tastes good, though. ;)

TOD:

A couple of them come to mind.  I think the first was 1974/75.  Nothing too unusual about it, but I always looked back on it as being my first "quiet" but excellent NYE spent in the company of close friends, safe at home in their Brentwood apartment (on Sunset Blvd.) that I greatly envied.  Three bedrooms, den, etc., and I believe it was costing them all of $375 per month.  But it was the company, the well-planned food, the conversation, the comfortable overnight stay, and a wonderful brunch the following day that made it just perfect.

The second would be 1979/80, on those same friends' 51-foot sailboat moored at Cozumel.  We did our share of partaking of whatever was going on in town, then saw the New Year in on the privacy of our own deck out in the harbor.  Completely enchanting.

Oh.  Okay.  Maybe next time?

Seeing how both DR Sandra and Mae-Ling are now vegetarians, I will be making vegetable soup for tonight. With matzo balls.

Are you sure that the crescent roll dough is vegetarian??  I recently got some Pillsbury pie crust (just unroll it into a pie pan) and it has partially hydrogenated lard.  And some (formerly) Hostess products use(d) lard in their cream fillings.

It all tastes good, though. ;)

Naw, I'm not sure, I figure that's up to the person eating.  I don't know anyone who is vegan, so I'm assuming it's a better choice than the choices with meat

Cillaliz--DR Kate made this to take to our nephew's on Christmas Eve!  There was a slight variation in the toppings, though.  I know she included green olives and cauliflower.  Yes, it is addicting!

That sounds good.  I think I might change the toppings next time, but I followed the recipe today as it's the first time I've made it

But seeing this marvelous production immediately took me back to the "Hami" (no pun intended) High production of 1965? '66? in which you I think played Tom. It was probably the first classic American play I had ever seen and I was transfixed. I thought you were "brilliant" and that enconter led me to a passionate relationship with "The Theater"! I just wanted to thank you for sending me off on one of he most eniching journeys of my life. Sorry for the cliche-ridden post but it's all true!!"

I thought Bruce Springsteen and Courtney Cox did "Dancin' In The Dark?"

CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND (the original version, not the Directors Cut or the Special Edition)  It had just enough magic, and laughter, and awe to make it like no other film I had ever seen.

I have the Blu-ray (http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000VECACG/) where you can choose to watch each of the three different versions without having to change discs.  This poster that comes in the set shows the differences:

That was certainly memorable. Glad you knew what to do and it was taken care of properly.

You explained it better than I would have. Tumors can be either malignant or benign. Some "tumors" turn out to be cysts. It's the malignancies that need to be caught early and often require radiation or chemo. Benign tumors can cause problems, such as pressing against other organs or tissues and are usually removed, but are in a different category than a malignancy.

WONDER BOYS

THE JANE AUSTINE BOOK CLUB ( I have already seen it but want to see again)

I wouldn't say I am a New Year's grinch, but I certainly don't think of it as a time to celebrate.  For me it means the end of another year, and we are all another year older.  I know that is a matter of the glass being half full or half empty, but that is how I look at it.  So, I stay home, I go to bed early, and I hope and pray that the fireworks at midnight don't terrify Nicky.

Is there girl soup, too? Or are boys tastier?

I was catching up on epsidoes of JULIA last night...just love that show, although some episodes are a bit forced...and the actors tend to scream their lines in the earlier episodes...but tons of wonderful guest stars appear, and Diannah Carroll is truly one of the most beautiful women ever!

And she is still beautiful.

She's a recurring character on "White Collar" and she even got to sing on the show last season.  She's still got it!

I really enjoy her in that role. A mobster's widow! She looks great.

I think you'll enjoy it, TCB!   Look for my friend Michael from Greece during Happy Days Are Here Again.  There's a closeup of him with tears down his face and then of him singing along with Barbra.  And my friend Robin is at the very very end holding up her sign "Thank You Barbra, We (Heart) You!'

I have several DVD's from the Library.

They are:

THE WEIGHT OF WATER
MR BROOKS
UNDER SUSPICION
THE TERMINAL
WONDER BOYS
THIS IS THE END
THE ARTIST
MALICE
THE JANE AUSTINE BOOK CLUB ( I have already seen it but want to see again)
MILDRED PIERCE (The HBO one with Kate Winslet)
Have any DR's seen any of these movies  and read this book?

I was impressed with both the original and the remake of MILDRED PIERCE. It's no surprise that I liked the original, but I wasn't at all sure I'd like the remake. It's quite a different film from the original, but a good one in its own way.

The remake is closer to the original Cain novel.

I didn't know that. The original is so powerful and such a beautiful, classic film.

Well, I seem to have picked up an unwelcome New Year's Eve friend in my Chrome browser:  an extension called RanDeomePrice that keeps reenabling or regenerating itself and causing little price deal pop-ups or slide-ins to appear on certain web pages such as Amazon, and extra little links to appear on Google search results.  Isn't that sweet?  And such a nice way to bring in the New year?

In my experience, such as with the thing that causes random words and phrases to become links, the only solution is to wipe out and reinstall Chrome.

Oy!

Seeing how both DR Sandra and Mae-Ling are now vegetarians, I will be making vegetable soup for tonight. With matzo balls.

I make that too. I call it Finger Salad.

This is a soup potluck, though.

I saw the national tour in 1985 or 86 in Seattle, starring Florence Lacey.  I don't remember too much about it other than Florence was fantastic.

Babs sent me her combination CD / DVD "Back To Brooklyn" to me.  It arrived today.

Oh wait, maybe I ordered it myself.  Well, it is the thought that counts.

Richard gave me the DVD/CD set for Christmas - I'll have to watch for your friends!

What a coinkydink!  I just got a copy from the library.

I love fettuccine alfredo. Once, when I was up in Quebec and had to stay off cheese, I asked a chef if he could make the alfredo sauce without the cheese. He wasn't enthusiastic, but it was actually pretty good. It's practically impossible to get a bad meal in Quebec.

I may make some pasta tomorrow.  Not sure what restaurants are open, but I have stuff here, thankfully.  Maybe just some pasta with butter and cheese - that actually sounds really good to me.

I don't expect many restaurants to be open. Maybe Denny's, but I don't think you'd be happy there.
