TOD:  New Year's Eve 1993/1994.  I arrived in Las Vegas to see Ms. Streisand for the very first time. I didn't make the New Year's Eve show, but saw the show on New Year's Day.  I had never thought I'd see her perform live.  Little did I know that she'd tour several times after that!

This morning I washed and ironed the  communion linens before I went to work  so on my early day  off I had time to drop by church and put them away.

Wow, the local news station just showed the New Year's fireworks in Dubai, which were spectacular!  HHW fave Brent B. is there performing in Chicago, the Musical.

Topic of the Day:

My favorite (and most memorable) New Year's Eve was when I was in New York in 1995.  We were supposed to have tickets to Patti LuPone's one-woman show that had extended to New Year's Eve, but the extension was cancelled.  A bunch of us instead got tickets for a special end-at-midnight performance of "Stomp" in Greenwich Village.  It was fantastic!  We didn't get back to Times Square until about a half hour after midnight but fortunately a lot of people were gone by then.  We still saw a LOT of drunk people staggering around a few had thrown up...and cops were everywhere.  Good times.

I also had time to go to the local BJ's and the local supermarket and get some snacky things in for tomorrow - cheese, crackers, shrimp, smoky sausage, ham ....and of course I stopped by the liquor store and got some champagne

My friends Cathie and Alice got married today.  The news was an unexpected surprise this morning - I was actually surprised they had waited so long! -  and I am very happy for them.

Congrats to Cathie and Alice!

What does that mean -- cancerous but benign?
I'm not the doctor. I just know I didn't have to do anything after it was removed. No chemo, no radiation.

Very good news!

By the way, Elan ..I am sure I speak for all of us here when I say that I think the best way to ring out the old year is with an updated photos of your heirs. Please.

*sigh* I don't have too many good recent photos here at work, but here's a 2-year old shot of all three guys

and a recent shot of my youngest.

Cute kids, Elan!

I was catching up on epsidoes of JULIA last night...just love that show, although some episodes are a bit forced...and the actors tend to scream their lines in the earlier episodes...but tons of wonderful guest stars appear, and Diannah Carroll is truly one of the most beautiful women ever!

And she is still beautiful.

She's a recurring character on "White Collar" and she even got to sing on the show last season.  She's still got it!

I was wondering what are ANY DR"S favorite MOVIES AND WHY???

CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND (the original version, not the Directors Cut or the Special Edition)  It had just enough magic, and laughter, and awe to make it like no other film I had ever seen.

I have the Blu-ray where you can choose to watch each of the three different versions without having to change discs.  This poster that comes in the set shows the differences:

Seeing how both DR Sandra and Mae-Ling are now vegetarians, I will be making vegetable soup for tonight. With matzo balls.
oh! You could make what I'm taking to the party tonight, it's a vegetable pizza appetizer.  You take crescent roll dough and spread it on a cookie sheet and bake it.  Then you mix cream cheese and dry ranch dressing mix and spread it on the cooled crust. Then you spread  chopped red and yellow bell peppers, green onions, carrots and broccoli on top.  You chill for an hour and viola!   My sister in law made it at Christmas and it was totally addicting

Are you sure that the crescent roll dough is vegetarian??  I recently got some Pillsbury pie crust (just unroll it into a pie pan) and it has partially hydrogenated lard.  And some (formerly) Hostess products use(d) lard in their cream fillings.

It all tastes good, though. ;)

TOD:

A couple of them come to mind.  I think the first was 1974/75.  Nothing too unusual about it, but I always looked back on it as being my first "quiet" but excellent NYE spent in the company of close friends, safe at home in their Brentwood apartment (on Sunset Blvd.) that I greatly envied.  Three bedrooms, den, etc., and I believe it was costing them all of $375 per month.  But it was the company, the well-planned food, the conversation, the comfortable overnight stay, and a wonderful brunch the following day that made it just perfect.

The second would be 1979/80, on those same friends' 51-foot sailboat moored at Cozumel.  We did our share of partaking of whatever was going on in town, then saw the New Year in on the privacy of our own deck out in the harbor.  Completely enchanting.

Actually, I just looked up Pillsbury crescent rolls and they use vegetable oils...it has hydrogenated oils, but not lard.
