Title: SPACKLING A HOLE
Post by: bk on March 13, 2014, 12:05:49 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes spackled several holes, and now it is time for you to post until the spackling cows come home.

I suppose the title of today's notes could also be changed slightly to Spackling A-Hole to take on a whole new meaning.

The first comic book I can consciously remember buying at the newsstand at Pico and Robertson (next to an Orange Julius) was MAD, when it was in comic book form - I believe it was the one with the school notebook cover, but it may have been an earlier one.  I was never a major comic book person, but I did occasionally buy Superman, Jimmy Olson, Lois Lane, and a handful of others.

TOD

I read all sorts of comics. Superman, Batman, Archie series, Richie Rich, The comic books that illustrated history, bible stories etc whose name I can't think of at this time of the day.

I preferred the Superman and Batman comics because their stories went the whole book. I think it was Richie Rich (Harvey Comics) that each story was only four or five pages long and there was two or three stories per book. Not sure if I am remembering it correctly though.

SPOILER ALERT!!!!!!

From the German production of Rocky (now in previews at the Winter Garden). Director Alex Timbers transforms the audience of the show into the audience for the climactic boxing match (first 12 rows of theater orchestra section relocated to bleachers on the stage, the ring slides out over the vacated seats, people in side seats are made to stand and crowd the ring). It's a thrilling effect that pulls the audience right into the action.

I am devastated to hear about DR Dan M's problem. I can't imagine how the thieves could have succeeded if the bank were following proper ID protocol.

Seriously.  How can this happen?  I can't even imagine walking up and cashing a twenty dollar check without showing some ID -- including my drivers license -- to the teller, let alone something sizable.  And they aren't following up and checking their security tapes?  Do you have a local TV station that takes up things like this for investigation (read:  public bank embarrassment, which is the very last thing they want)?  This is the kind of thing that leaves one speechless.

DR DAN M - I, too, can't understand how someone could cash such a check without proper ID - it sounds like he must have had inside help.

I agree with DR CHAS SMITH that a local television station with a Investigating Reporter might be interested in the story.

I'm completely baffled by DR Dan M's story: I would think the charities would receive copies of the canceled checks showing the endorsers' signature(s), and the bank that cashed the checks should have some record of when the transaction(s) occurred and what teller cashed the checks.

TOD:

Superman - I especially liked the stories that took place on Krypton.  NONE of the movies or tv shows have really captured the feeling that those comic books had.

I hated Charlton Comics.....terrible illustrations and stories.

I also liked the Tales of Terror or whatever it was called that had about three different stories in each issue...stories with surprise endings like Twilight Zone or O. Henry.

Lois Lane and Jimmy Olsen were okay.....but Superman was the best.   Now and then I bought Batman if the cover was interesting.

Comic books were ten cents when I started buying them and were twenty cents when I stopped.  First increase was to twelve cents which was a shock.  That is when I bought a couple of Charlton Comics because they were still ten cents.....

My e-books never show the blurbs but i wish they did. I end up checking on goodreads. Or I can go from my kindle onto amazon's kindle page to read it.  But sometimes I can't read it all because they give away too much. But i like to have an idea what the book is about before i read it. Just no spoilers, if that makes sense.

I know the DRs will come up with many I've forgotten, but...

As a young'un:
Uncle Scrooge, Daffy Duck, most any other such character
Casper the Friendly Ghost
Archie
Little Lulu
Blondie (if it was published in comic book form - not sure)
...and many others.

As a teen:
Superman and all related.  (Never cared much for Batman then, and not at all for the other action heroes.)
Twilight Zone and certain movie tie-ins, probably Disney stuff for the most part.
Classics Illustrated -- some titles.

As an adult:
Nada.  Of course I wish I'd saved all the above.  (Don't we all.)  But I love looking at the occasional pieces I've come across for low prices over the years.  (I don't seek them out or spend serious bucks on them.)

I love the idea of graphic novels and such, but the only contemporary stuff I've been moved to buy have been a few American Splendors, Ghost World, some illustrated Poe...  and not too much else that I can think of.

Thursday morning greetings!  Cold again here in SW Ohio, but the sun is shining and the snow stayed north of us this time.  I'm going out shopping today for a new dress to wear to a wedding at the end of the month.  It's a "black tie optional" affair and I'd planned to wear the dress I wore for Rob & Mary Linda's wedding.  Alas, that has become slightly snug (but not unwearable) and, even worse, is very close in color to what the mother of the groom (my sister-in-law Kathy) is wearing.  Pray for Rosemary's Baby...

Can you elaborate, DR ChasSmith?

Orchestra level completely unavailable for all performances, with nary a "good" seat remaining on any upper level.  And I do mean nary.

I'd sure like to think I'm seeing this wrong, maybe blame it on my browser or something!  :)

TOD: We weren't allowed to throw away money on comic books when I was a kid, but someone down the street gave me his stack of comics when he outgrew them. They were all Marvel comics, including Poseidon and the Avengers, my two favorites. Plenty of Spidermans, the Defenders and X-men in there, too.

Oh, I forgot about The Defenders! I bought them regularly, also.  And I did pick up issues of The Avengers every now and then.

Actually, I think my comic book buying spanned all of two years...1976 and 1977. I will have to check my stash this weekend, and see what all is there.

I do know that I always preferred Marvel comics over D.C. Comics. I liked their style.

I have checked out the current crop of super hero comics, and in addition to the whopping price per issue, I don't find the artwork to be as appealing to me as that from the 1970s and earlier.

I just remembered, when we moved to Michigan the second time the workmen had trouble cashing my checks because my signature didn't match on one on record due to a major injury to my hand.  At least that was what I had originally thought until I figured out Keith had forged my signature since I couldn't use my hand. ;D

Jennifer my library eBook doesn't show the blurbs.  Sometimes books do but not tonight.

Yes, which is why I am careful about reading blurbs.  I have some on eBooks that went on forever so I don't mind not having them there.

So, what happened to the plane?

You know, reading about that missing airliner the other day I came across stories on two airline mishaps that I had totally forgotten about. Both passanger planes that were shot down by overzealous military personnel...

One was a Korean Airlines traveling from Alaska to South Korea which was shot down by Russian military, killing almost 300 passangers and crew. I think this was around 1983

The other was a passenger plane flying from Tehran to Dubai which was shot down by US navy personnel killing all 296 passengers and crew (including 66 children under the age of 12). This one was in 1989.

Both incidents were considered 'mistakes.' What terrible mistakes! And scary to think that such a thing could happen (not that I think this is what happened with the Malaysian airplane...although, you never know, I suppose).

Oy!  I should try to get to that.  And what else were they doing?

Edit:   IRMA LA DOUCE.  I've never gotten to know that one at all, yet, I'm afraid.

In 2009 or s, Jo Loesser asked me to edit a new edition of the orchestra parts, since the old hand-copied parts were hard to read and rehearse, and that meant editing a new full score for conductors to use as well. Took about a year working with a grad student in LA who did the Finale work.

And I am home. Good rehearsal, I think. Rob Berman is such a fantastic conductor!  And 38 players for the score!

Now I've got to get the records and score out and do a little cramming for this one.

DR Jennifer I did not read the funny blurb.  If I don't fall asleep soon I will begin the book having already finished my last one.

The blurb isn't funny. IT is downright one of the creepiest things i've ever read!

LOL I guess I'm glad I missed it.  I am having a bit of trouble reading this book and reliving my life since my shoulder was broken.  Actually I would have liked to initially have had it as easy as she is.  I bet she heals better too, well I expect so as she needs to shoot again to keep her job ;)
Actually she seems to be in a lot of pain. So it is probably quite realistic. The creepy stuff is not to do with her but the other narrator and the other narrator's sister.

I've been comparing her pain to mine after my injury.  I read a bit more and I keep shaking my head how she does everything to make it worst and doesn't do the exercises, on her own, that will help.  This really expresses so very much of what I went through and still do.  I fortunately knew about the breathing methods she is learning, but that who dependency part and the frustration of it.  Gardner has done an excellent job of expressing it all while maintaining DD's personality in dealing with it.  And wisely made it the left shoulder so she could drive :)

The narrator twist is great!  But I admit I am rather distracted by relating too closely to the detective's injuries, physical & psychologically.

I was thinking the plane crossed into the future or the past. But I read too many books of that nature.

Good morning, all! I will shortly head off to the orchestra reading for Encores! MOST HAPPY FELLA. This will be the first time I've heard the parts played from my edition of the score. I'm a bit excited about it.
...

DR Elmore, should Richard and I try to get tickets for that for April 2 or 3?

We're actually going with Row J, so Richard can have the aisle he likes...

Poor DR Ginny! She just called me thinking she'd get Dr Jekyll and instead she got Mr Hyde. I was in the middle of burning a saucepan of mac'n'cheese, wondering where today's mail was, and pondering a voice message - do I listen or ignore? - and she got the brunt of my frustration. I am so sorry, DR Ginny!

And, since DR ChasSmith will be in for the April 3 performance, perhaps we could have dinner before the show?

It is about time!

I thought of you as my friend relayed the story of what happened when her son was at the post office with his family, including his two little girls.

A woman walked in with an envelope saying something about Anthrax.  The PO employee was about to open it when my friend's son pretty much lost it to get him to stop and called for another manager.  At that point the lady left with her package.  The FBI tested for anthrax and think she was probably just a crazy lady.

I believe this idiot postal worker was a reject from your PO.

I, too, am appalled at DR Dan's story. I've wondered before where the liability resides when someone steals and cashes a check. Was the bank BofA? Some BofAs seem to go out of their way to squeeze their customers. Also, did the thieves go into Dan's bank to cash the checks? I'm not sure i could walk into a bank where I didn't have an account and cash a check.

I truly hope you get something out of this, Dan, even if it takes a while. And I agree completely with your attitude.

I've been reading everyone's comments and appreciate everyone's support.  I've been talking with many different people and places.  This is the best I can do so far to piece it all together.  The end result is still the same though.  I'm still out a considerable amount that I could have used/been using during my current disability period to supplement my very fixed income.

1.   At the beginning of 2013, due to the significance of my illness/in-patient cancer treatments, I granted my roommate/friend power of attorney so that banking would continue during my incapacity because at that time it wasn't so certain that I would survive.
2.   When my treatments tailed off at the end of 2013, and I started to feel stronger, I revoked the POA prior to my going away for the holiday season.
3.   I have now learned that the bank did not enforce the revocation despite it being the only one I had and granting this to only one person.  I was told that this was due to "my failure" to “name” the POA agent.
4.   During the gap of time when I thought I had revoked the POA by filing it with the bank and when I was made to send a “corrected” form, the charity checks had been sent to my address.
5.   At that time, I was out-of-town and had no knowledge that these checks had arrived.
6.   I have also since learned that my roommate has a gambling addiction.  After much cajoling, he admitted same to me.
7.   He cashed the checks using the POA at the bank, even though they knew of the revocation, which was apparently not put "in force" until the "corrected" form was on file.
8.   I have found that the charities cannot resend any funds since they were cashed “in my behalf" during this last charity cycle.
9.   The police cannot do anything for the same reason.
10.   The bank seems to be at fault, but I cannot figure out how to get them on the hook, if I can.
11.   My roommate/friend has since yesterday apologized profusely, but he has no money and is unemployed, so even though he says he will repay me, I will not hold my breath.
12.   I am very reluctant to press charges against my friend even though he does “deserve” to be punished in a real world way and not just by harboring great amounts of guilt.  I feel sympathetic to his problem and am torn between anger and empathy.
13.   Therefore I am feeling stuck between the bank’s inactivity due to a detail that was not as important as the overall meaning of the revocation document, the charities’ inability to send more funds to make up for what I lost (for which I am not surprised), and my friend's awful, horrid betrayal/addiction.

I am at a loss in many, many ways and am also mad at myself for having gone out-of-town during the holidays for the purpose of recuperation.

I can understand your dilemma, DR DanM.  I'm so sorry this happened to you.

I'm glad you have a clearer picture of what happened, Dan, but do not blame yourself for this. You needed that recuperation, just like you do not need this stress. The bank has now revoked the POA, correct?

You can still hold the bank up in public as negligent because it did not tell you that your form was incomplete. I would let them know that you plan to do just that. It might be worth it to them to reimburse you the $2,500 to spare themselves from who knows how costly the bad publicity is.

Sidenote-  They used to have a "pen pal" section in the magazine.  I sent my name in and got at least a hundred replies from all over the world.  Years later, when I was in college I got a couple of pen pal requests from 12 year olds who thought I was still that age.

LOL.  How many pen-pals did you have when you were 12?

Exactly! Do not  feel guilty that you were out of town. Find some new friends. And tell the thief to eat dirt and die. Friends like that you do not need, especially ones with addiction problems.

I agree and I too would not to be the cause of my friend's arrest.  This is still your roommate though?  I hope nothing else will be stolen.

Even though the money can't be returned maybe your friend will agree to gamblers anonymous.

Well, I already had two pen pals before my name was in the magazine.   I really don't remember if I wrote to more than a couple of the new ones.  I think I was too overwhelmed by the response!

As it turns out, I'm also going to be in NYC on April 3rd (from the 3rd till the 7th).   I had gotten a ticket for the Guys and Dolls concert at Carnegie Hall as soon as they went on sale several months ago.  What a cast---Nathan Lane, Megan Mullally, Sierra Boggess, Patrick Wilson, Judy Kaye, Christopher Fitzgerald, Len Cariou to name a few!

Hanging clothes on hangers can lead to fabric shrinkage.

TOD:

When I was younger, I enjoyed the horror comics like EERIE, CREEPY and WEIRD TALES.  These were (now obvious to me) homages/rip-offs of the earlier VAULT OF HORROR and TALES FROM THE CRYPT.  I also enjoyed HEAVY METAL.  Throughout my life, I've been a big fan of classic MAD.  I stopped reading the newer editions since the mid-1980s as I feel the magazine changed too much.  Knowing a bit about the original publisher William Gaines, after he passed away, the magazine became far too corporate, which I think he would have abhorred.  The magazine also changed over to slick, color pages.  Gaines always preferred newsprint, and once Harvey Kurtzman left EC, color left for the most part.

Thank you Bruce, and everyone for your supportive and kind words and vibes.  I will gather my thoughts together and make a case to the bank.  I think I need to present it as logically and chronologically as possible to emphasize the gap.

In late 2013, there was one charity that did not send any money, but agreed to sponsor a website for me to generate funds.  I didn't answer one way or the other.  Maybe I should revisit that offer as well.

However, I think the bank is also at fault. You revoked the POA and they endorsed your check. They should be held responsible for that. I would not let that go.

Dan , I am very sorry to hear about your travails.    is your friend /roommate still your roommate?
And  is it possible  with his addiction problem, that he was responsible your  robbery  as well as for the check theft?

I understand your reluctance to pursue a once trusted friend, and I believe FJL has a good point, the bank  may wish to take action against the person who cashed the check
