Good morning, all! I must needs hie myself to Toyland for a while today, and then it's time to finish off this choral piece and begin work on a number for Miss Karen Ziemba.

I had a lovely visit with DRs Jose and Jason yesterday afternoon, and DR Jason brought me a sparkling gift, which is much appreciated. DR Jose looks great; the effects of his diet are showing, but to me he will always be the man who walks down Broadway and consumes his weight in food on the way. As I worked around the apartment yesterday, I checked out two DVDs, a performance of Mozart's DIE ZAUBERFLOTE from 1983 and Strauss' DIE FLEDERMAUS from about the same time. Both were quite wonderful, although the ZAUBERFLOTE as a staged production lacks the final magic of Ingmar Bergman's wonderful film of THE MAGIC FLUTE.

After dinner with DRs Jason and Jose, I worked a bit on my medley for the chorus, watched a bit of MAD TV, which had a funny parody of GHOSTWATCHER, and went to bed.

Sunday morning greetings! Today is a one-day weekend for me. DH Richard and I will go to church in Cincinnati, have lunch and a brief visit with DS Rob, and then go to a concert by The King's Singers. They are performing at St. Peter in Chains Cathedral - a place I'm ashamed to say I've never visited in the 33 years I've lived in the area.

Sending vibes to: DR Danise for continued recovery, DR Joy for dreams come true, DR Jason 'cause I miss him, and all the DRs who are feeling under the weather.

Requesting vibes for: my mother-in-law, age 89, who's back in the hospital. We'll check on her before we take off for Cincinnati.

Sounds like the show went well....and the new hair cut is stunning.

I find that wearing a nice wig while giving notes is a great way to get the full attention of the cast and crew.

Since MADTv was a repeat - and the GhOST WHISPERER parody was VERY funny - I put on the STRAWBERRY STATEMENT dvd.

I was whisked back to 1969 or so. Not a GREAT movie, but very good music and some nice young players....Bruce Davison, Kim Darby, Bud (friend of MR BK) Cort, and in all his YOUNG glory Mr Bob Balaban playing the leader of the group "sitting in" at the University President's Office.

Looks like my seller made a copy of his VideoBeat disk, but it looked much better than I expected, although it is in full screen.

THE RESTLESS YEARS....oh my, yes. Also featuring Virginia Grey, Jody McCrea, and John Wilder. Luana Patten does a wild cha cha and tries to force Sandy to give her the lead in OUR TOWN...which Sandra has won even though she wears strange clothes....and then there's the Bandstand!! Dorothy Green is terrific.

Well...I guess we could talk today about Mr Don Knotts....

I first remember him from The Steve Allen Show, as the nervous man on the street. He would shake and shake and try to answer questions even though he had about a hundred body, face, and hand tics. Allen would finally ask him what his job was. The reply:

"I put pins in hand grenades."

A bad day im hollywood yesteday not only did Don Knotts pass, but Darren McGavin also passed.

Did you know that BK does a wonderful Don Knotss vocal impression? If you closed your eyes you would swear he was right there.

Darren McGavin wonderful character actor who I first new when he did a series of car commercials in Canada and then I saw him a film with Roz Russell called Mrs. Polifax Spy. I also happened to meet him and his late wife when they came to my film school and showed From Zero to Sixty.

Did anybody else watch the Olympics yesterday. Speedskating is probably my favorite sport to watch, so I rewatched it last night on NBC.

Comments:

First off, I found it slightly annoying that NBC shows things out of order. They showed Apollo Ono's first races in short track way before they showed the long track (when the long track happened much earlier). But whatever.

I was actually very impressed with NBC's coverage, mostly. Especially the way the covered the women's longtrack race. I was stunned at how much time they gave to the Canadians. I guess with no American hopefuls they had to do something. But it was really moving.

Then came the men's short track race. I was cheering for the 2 Canadians in the final. They were up against Ono and the Korean (who apparently is Ono's arch rival, or so NBC said). So their focus was on them. I was pretty disappointed that there were 2 false starts, and then it looked like maybe the American started early. So he stayed in the lead the entire race. I was also disppointed that the Korean edged his skate in at the end for 3rd place.

The most interesting NBC coverage was the men's short track relay. This is the craziest race ever, and with 5 teams (instead of 4) in the finals it was even more insane.

There were 2 races going on, one for first (with the canadians and koreans) and one for third (the US and italy). I wonder if i was the only one annoyed that the chinese skater (in last) sort of got in the way at the end. It ruined the ending for me. Of course i wanted the Canadians to win. But i just wanted to see the end of that race be clean.

But what made me crazy was watching NBC's coverage. Now i get it, they are catering to American viewers. But they stopped showing the race for first (in the relay) between the Canadians and Koreans and only showed the race for third between the US and italians.

I was trying to think if the situation had been reversed, and it was the canadian team in third, would i have rather seen that or the leaders, and I really believe I would rather see the leaders. I really think they should have shown the winners and then gone back after and shown the race for third. Instead they did the opposite.

I'm curious if any of you guys saw that race, and if you felt the same way.

Absolutely agree with you in every respect. These two films are very powerful and completely unpretentious. They just are what they are and are all the more wonderful for their simplicity of storytelling and character exploration.

And they were each made for less than $10 million making their cases for being quality films at a reasonable price.

I had read of Don Knotts' passing yesterday, but was completely saddened to read about Darren McGavin in the newspaper this morning. What a wonderful actor.

Just to watch him in action on KOLCHAK: THE NIGHT STALKER or in A CHRISTMAS STORY is to see a master at work. I will miss him a great deal.
