Are we talking vegan? lacto-ovo? lacto? etc., etc., etc...
In any case... I'm a big fan of the vegetarian cuisine of southern India. I'm constantly amazed at how lentils, rice and vegetables can be transformed into some truly delicious eats like
dosas...
There's a place around the corner from DR elmore's pad called the
Hampton Chutney Co.. They specialize in
dosas and
uttapams topped or filled with various fillings, some traditional, some not so traditional. It's a not a true Indian restaurant, but I'd say it's a good starter place. -Oh, and they do offer grilled chicken as a filling/topping if you'd like your protein from something other than rice and lentils.
And the
Zen Palate chain here in NYC - and soon to be in L.A.! - also has some amazing vegetarian dishes.
