I am getting the impression that many of these singers would do well to work with an accompanist a bit and learn how to come into an audition better prepared.
Well, sadly(?), I think it's a case of economics as it were. A lot of actors don't work with someone before an audition since they can't afford to work with someone.
Although, today was sort of strange. We had a bunch of people who came into the room, and the first words out of their mouths were, "This is my first audition." And, alas, it showed.
Then there were the people who had decent "books", but then had no real idea what and how to sing. However, at least they had the repertoire.
And then there were the people who had obviously just come out of a college program, but seemed to have absolutely no idea what to do at an audition. It's cases like that where I just have to wonder about the program they went through, and/or what kind of student they were.
Oh... And then there are the people who bring in a good "book", and then when asked if they could sing something else, really don't know what else to sing - even though they brought in 20 other songs with them. OR when I start looking through their book, "Oh, could we hear that?"
-I don't know that one... Or that one.... Well...
