I just finished watching a wonderful film starring Dorothy Dandridge and Harry Belafonte called BRIGHT ROAD (1953). Dorothy plays a new 4th grade teacher who tries her best to get through to a problem student. Belafonte plays the principle.

Such a cute movie!

I must say, Dorothy D. is quite purty...and so is Harry B.!

OK, a former child actor will be trying to reach me via telepone soon, so I had best get off the computer.

DRs, thank you for the vibes today. I don't believe 2006 will be a good year for my father and my family.  I'm frustrated by the distance between NYC and Ohio and torn between wanting to be in Ohio with him and glad I'm not stuck there.  I am planning another trip for mid-July.

TOTD

I'm reminded of John Sebastion's song from the 1960's:

Why must every generation think their folks are square
And no matter where their heads are they know mom´s ain´t there
Cause I swore when I was small that I´d remember when
I knew what´s wrong with them that I was smaller then

Determined to remember all the cardinal rules
Like sun showers are legal grounds for cutting school
I know I have forgotten maybe one or two
And I hope that I recall them all before the baby´s due
And I knoe he´ll have a question or two

Like "hey Pop, can I go ride my zoom
It goes two hundred miles an hour suspended by balloons
And can I put a droplet of this new stuff on my tongue
And imagine frothing dragons while you sit and wreck your lungs"
And I must be permissive, understanding of the younger generation

Then I´ll know that all I´ve learned my kid assumes
And all my deepest worries must be his cartoons
And still I´ll try to them him all the things I´ve done
Related to what he can do when he becomes a man
And still he´ll stick his fingers in the fan

And "Hey, Pop, my girlfriend´s only three
She´s got her own videophone and she´s taking L.S.D.
And now that we´re best friends she wants to give a bit to me
But what´s the matter Daddy, how come you´re turning green?
Can it be that you can´t live up to your dream?"

The stovetop is black glass and the oven is black. And the range hood is black. They make seem to make all black appliances these days. I remember harvest gold and avocado.

Gloomy Sunday.. Drizzling rain.  I'm listening to Warner Bros. Stars Christmas. (as one does in May).

I shall quite possibly watch "Gloomy Sunday" in the next week or so - but not on a Sunday.

TCB, (or anyone else, actually ;)), click HERE.  Sara Davis is a caberet performer who had a hip replacement when she was 31!  She's even featured in an ad (it's on the website).  Anyway, she has an act called "I'm (Artificially) Hip!" and the site has four tracks that you can listen to, one of them being the title song.  The song is pretty funny.  She also does some serious songs, too, and she's good. ;D

My thought are with you, Larry.

RANT coming.... Okay - as much as I have gotten impatient, annoyed and angry at my share of teenagers in my day (and will continue to do so, I'm sure) -- I think we're doing a huge disservice both to the kids and to ourselves by painting an entire generation ("with some exceptions") with the silly, immature, stupid, etc. brush.
It's easy to put labels on these kids and shake our heads in disgust. But, come on folks, WE'RE the adults. Let's look beneath the surface. Let's assume that if we got to know some of these "immature cretins" there might be something more there.

I lived near Columbine at the time of those horrible events. My daughter's school was the sister school of Columbine. The way these kids (from her school) behaved following that tragedy really opened my eyes to so many things. They rose to the occasion, they had character, they had depth. Yes - depth. Kids I had been writing off as - well, as all of the things named in previous posts - suddenly exhibited dignity, leadership, strength. Okay, this was an isolated incident, certainly not, thank goodness, typical. But I cite it because it taught me a lesson. It's too easy to write teenagers off. They make it easy for us. But let's be better than that. These are hard times to live in. Particularly when you have no real control over your life. Sure they act out. Sure they can be obnoxious. But they're still young, Very young. And  - as I said - we're the adults.

I'm going to stop preaching now. And, believe me, I can be as intolerant and unreasonable as the best of them. Ask my DD about the time I threw all her loud teen friends out of the house. So it's no saint speaking here. But, I find it unsettling to hear so many kind and reasonable people (that's YOU, DRs) not looking past the surface -- unattractive as that surface can be.
End of Rant.

Well said Maria.   Thank you.
