Hi!  I'm taking my last day off before going back. I have a hearing tomorrow afternoon, so I'll probably start working later this afternoon or tonight.  The Government hasn't filed their response yet (due today) so there isn't much I can do anyway. I looked and my entire day tomorrow is booked solid. so nice of them to do that when I'm gone.

We may have snow flurries tomorrow, so I decided it's time to put away the outdoor furniture.  Got all that done this morning and now I'm off to get some plastic to put up over the gazebo windows so it's ready for the winter.

Then this weekend I'm hoping to buy quarter round and get it installed in the bedroom.  When I ripped out the carpet there wasn't any there.  I even got my very own miter box so I can cut it myself...oh boy

Just had our anniversary lunch while watching an episode of MATLOCK, featuring BK's own Linda Purl (the episode of MATLOCK, that is, not the lunch).

Yes, DR MATTH is correct - CITIZEN COHN is a good HBO flick.  Woods is amazing as Cohn - though of course, it helps itf you've read the book.

I liked it, too.  Perhaps I'd add ANGELS IN AMERICA to my list of political films.

Yes! But it's a manual. And not the *fun* kind of manual, either...

I began with afternoon remembering something I have been wanting to watch and can't believe I hadn't gotten to it.

THE MEN WHO MADE THE MOVIES - Vincente Minnelli.

It's one of the special features on THE BAND WAGON DVD set. I saw the show when it was originally telecast and never again. I'm VERY grateful to Warners for going back into the documentary and replacing the old clips with the newly remastered/restored clips where they could (ST. LOUIS and THE BAND WAGON both looked amazing).

Minnelli has such an interesting filmography. As an MGM contract director, he did have to do films he might not have been doing (the sequel to FATHER OF THE BRDIE, for instance), and the documentary only hit some high spots. Minnelli himself wasn't very articulate at all, so that made the interview material somewhat problematic. Still, it's wonderful seeing some of those films.

MADAME BOVERY needs an immediate DVD release!

Next came BEYOND THE SEA.

Well, Bobby Darin is obviously someone Kevin Spacey admired, and that does come through the film. He loved the man.

But as writer-director-producer of this film, its weaknesses as a film have to be placed purely on his doorstep, and there are many.

Start with the motif for the film, like DE-LOVELY, the biographical subject making a production of his life story. I LOATHE this approach to biographies (older Darin talking to himself as a kid, what a joke). Bobby Darin had an interesting enough life that didn't need this flashy but hackneyed approach.

Spacey can sing the songs. What he can't do is STYLE the songs in a way that captures the spark, verve, and elan that Bobby Darin brought to all his music. Spacey is an excellent character actor, but what he doesn't have is charisma, and someone portraying Bobby Darin needs an outsized personality which SPacey simply doesn't have. Despite losing weight, he's also still too beefy and tall to represent Darin. I just never for an instant bought him as the man.

I thought all the casting was weak frankly. Carolyn Aaron looked to be about the same age as Kevin Spacey so how could we buy her as his mother? (Even Brenda Blethyn seemed too young as his "mother"/grandmother.) Kate Bosworth was no patch on Sandra Dee.

I did like Rob Ashford's three big production numbers, particularly "Beyond the Sea" and "That's All" which had a big movie musical feel and panache to them, something the book scenes of the film could have used tremendously.

So, glad I saw it, but I don't ever want to see it again. I'll play my Darin LPs and CD when I want the real thing.

Ended the afternoon with OLD CHRISTINE, a rather tired farce centered on CHristine going back to church for the first time in years. One of two chuckles and that's it. Frankly, her brother Matthew's babysitting her son in Sunday school was funnier, especially when he perked up when someone in the class asked what GODSPELL was.

I did save CSI:MIAMI for tonight.

I also got GREY'S ANATOMY - Season 1 in the mail which I bought used for less than $10. There were only 9 episodes telecast in its first season, but I'm not sure I saw all nine since ABC skipped around all summer between the two seasons. Probably won't get to any of them tonight, but I'll start watching them tomorrow.

I called the cable company and I'm getting the cable put into my new place TOMORROW between 8 a.m. and noon!  It's happening tomorrow!!  AND VERY EARLY IN THE MORNING!! :P

I did have some later choices, but at 4-hour blocks of time, the afternoon choices would ruin my day, so I'll get my butt out of bed and over to the condo and be done with it. :)
