MARCH TO THE BEAT OF A NEW DRUM
« on: March 01, 2007, 12:18:03 AM »

Well, you've read the notes, the notes were very March-like, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently Marching to the beat of a new drum, only they can't find the beat.

Favourite board games:

Monopoly (I have only played the UK version)
Cluedo. (Is that Clue in the USA?). I have even used it as a teaching aid for Deductive reasoning.

Stockmarket and Squatter were also very popular at times. I suspect the latter was Australian.

Trivial Pursuit at times. (I'm not usually very familiar with anything to do with sport or TV series).

Favorite board games (that I can think of):  Sorry, Aggravation and Monopoly.

Favorite card game (it's pretty much the only game that the family plays):  Phase 10.  It's like Gin Rummy but you have a special deck and for each hand, you have to get specific card patterns and get them in order.  The first person who gets to Phase 10, or with the lowest score if two or more get it on the same hand, wins.

Okay.  Here (finally) is my review of The Brain From Planet X.  Let me know if it's too...much ;):

Quote
THE BRAIN FROM PLANET X is the kind of musical that musical theater lovers love. It’s a show with a fun tale to tell and a great score. The story (as synopsized in the booklet) by David Wechter and Bruce Kimmel is not just a spoof but also a loving tribute to the science fiction B movies of the 1950s. You can tell that the authors know and love the genre. What’s unique about the story (at least, these days) is that it’s not specifically based on any previously existing material. It’s an original musical.

The music and lyrics by Bruce Kimmel are melodic, catchy, fun, touching (when appropriate) and just overall well-written. The whole score sounds like it could’ve been written back then and it would’ve been a hit. AND there’s an actual theremin playing in the opening sequence!  It’s perfect!

All of the performers sing their hearts out with great energy and spot-on delivery. You really wouldn’t know that most of them are students at Los Angeles City College. They’re professional caliber.

Kritzerland has put out some wonderful CDs in the short time that it’s been around. Everything’s been top-notch and this new CD is no exception. Highly recommended!

Holy Moley! 25 Pages on a Wednesday Night?

Good morning, all!  DR MissKaren, you've always been a goddess in my book.

Too little sleep and too early morning appointments make Larry a sad boy!  I want to go back to bed, but I have to be out of here in a short time.  I shall accomplish all my errands, and get myself back here to await news on tonight's dinner with our DR Cillaliz and assorted friends and work on Ms Joanna Gleason's orchestration.

Games: Hearts, Monopoly, Bookworm

Good Morning, Dear Larry.

Enjoy your dinner tonight. Miss CillaLiz is coming downtown tomorrow and we shall visit and play and eat.

The Japanese restaurant directly across the street from the theatre is only OK. I've been there a couple of times and the service is adequate (not bad, but not particularly good) and the food is decent. Even though it's close, I'd say no to Japanese. Film Center Cafe on 9th Avenue has spruced up and it's now trendy, trendy, trendy. It's also busy and loud. It's kind of close (9th Avenue and 45th) but not a go unless you can't find another place. The Hourglass Tavern on the corner of 46th and 9th Avenue (one of the last restaurants on Restaurant Row) is fun but small. Zuni on 43rd and 9th is good. Is that close enough?

My, my, all this talk about restaurants and I'm not even going to dinner with you people.

I'm also seeing Curtains later in the month. My theatre buddy wants to go so I promised I would see it with him.

The morning ritual of washing my oatmeal bowl is nigh.

I'm listening AccuRadio and Cole Porter just sang "You're The Top"

AccuRadio is beta testing a Build Your Own Station. I like it! I have chosen Broadway Classic, Broadway Modern, Oldies (60s) and Pop Standards. It's a nice mix and so far no repeats.

Birthday Kurt is the Evil Kurt Owens who posted here a couple of times and then disappeared.  He is very funny, designs and writes instruction books for computer games, does theatre, and is a BIG Sondheim fan.

Perhaps someday he will return here as I have encouraged him.

I love the game of LIFE and the CAREERS game.

BUT - if I had to choose one game that we played and loved and played and played again it would be:  CLUE!!!

I only remember one scene from ANY WEDNESDAY (although I remember I didn't think Mr Jason Robards was right in it) - the people are in a taxi playing some kind of clapping/word game.

It is pretty funny, and I would guess it was very funny onstage....kind of like the word game in YOU CAN'T TAKE IT WITH YOU ("Everybody got sex?")

PERICOPE

POI CREPE - some Hawaiian/French fusion dish, I guess.

ROPE EPIC - a western about a cattle drive

PIPE CORE - empty

RICE POPE - Chinese and Catholic, interesting combo.

Der Brucer and I tried to play Clue with the grandlads once.  William was too young to understand the deduction idea of the game, and Magic Mommy being around didn't help matters any.  It was William's turn, and she told him "You have to guess who the murderer is."  (She really does talk like that.)

William got this sly look on his face, and replied "They all did it!"

It's going to be fun later on, when he's old enough to read and enjoy Agatha Christie's books.

Good Morning!

I'm up, I'm up...

Alas, I'm up since I had two very disturbing dreams, back to back, I believe...  The first one involved the death of a friend... The second one seemed like a scene from one of those "trendy" Japanese horror movies (like "The Grudge").

Needless to say, the dream about my friend's death is not sitting well with me.  And, since in my dream, I found about his death via a headline on Playbill.com - he's an actor - I was a bit hesitant to open my internet browser this morning.

-I'll be making a phone call in a few hours.

...And the horror movie dream... A basement of a warehouse... It was raining outside... Lots of running water inside too (faucets turned on)... Workers continuously scrubbing down the walls... Dirty water coming out of the faucets - Is it just rusty water?  Or is it something else... The the walls started to bleed... Then a small door started to open...  Then...

:-\

Well... Again, another vivid dream.  And I'm only spooked by it since I seem to remember so much of it.

On to happier topics... Like the Topic of the Day...

Board Games: Scrabble, Life, Parcheesi, Monopoly (although I don't think I've ever played Monopoly according to the real rules).  And sometimes there's nothing like a basic game of Checkers, and if I'm feeling particularly brainy that day, Chess.

Card Games:  Blackjack ;), War, Go Fish, Crazy 8's, Old Maid, Spit, and whatever that game is where you place one card on your forehead.  ;)

Other Card Games: Killer Bunnies, Skip-Bo, Uno

Other Games: Battleship, Operation, Ice Breakers, Connect Four
