Again today's mail may determine what DVDs I watch today. I also have some Blu-rays waiting to be cracked open. I may go with THE HITCHHIKER'S GUIDE TO THE GALAXY on Blu-ray this afternoon.

I'm blanking out on pushing-the-envelope movies. The only one that comes to mind is TFNM. Yes, yes, I know I'm biased, and this is BK's site after all, but it may be in a league by itself.

I am reading Matthew's posts on his new diet with great interest. When I return from my travels it will be time for me to do something radical, too. (Diet-wise, that is...)

Good luck with it, Matthew!

Pushing the envelope dramatically, in terms of controversial subject matter.
Anyone remember this film? I've always liked it.

Last night DR MATTH mentioned Jules Dassin's NIGHT AND THE CITY. I saw the interviews with Dassin a few months ago, and, like you, DR MATT, quite liked them. I'm impressed with Mr Dassin as both a filmmaker and a person of integrity. Like the film, too. :)

I saw another film recently where the DVD included a different score. Can't think what it was. Anyone recall examples of this? I find it quite interesting.

I found him a class act down the line. He could have been snarky about Joan Crawford, Louis B. Mayer, and Kazan, all of whom we've read nasty stories about for years, and yet, he said his piece and declined to comment any more.

Can't wait for Criterion to release BRUTE FORCE soon. I've never seen it, and I'm anxious to.

I guess I'd have to say MYRA BRECKINRIDGE as the most outrageous. Seems fairly tame now. I also thought BLOW-UP was very racy in its day. I was still in high school when it came out, and when my parents let me go see it, it was the first time I really felt they trusted me and my interest in film no matter how much adverse publicity a film had generated.

Absolutely love it. One of the best of its kind. I watched it again about six months ago after not seeing it for many years, and it held up beautifully. Hayward certainly deserved her Oscar.

Was Valley of the Dolls considered to be pushing the envelope in its day, or was it viewed as camp from the get-go?

Still looking for an HDTV....not sure....but there is a nice 37" Polaroid LCD that is priced right.

It may be a few weeks before I can make the switch to Digital Cable....will an HDTV receive the analog signals with no problem?

Yes, it will receive them, but they won't look like high def. HDTVs typically seem to exacerbate the flaws of analog transmission. Lots of people get disappointed early when they get new HDTVs home and their old analog pictures don't look fabulous.

The truth is that digital sets do better with digital signals (HDTV, DVDs) than they do with the old analog signals of NTSC broadcasting.

No, it got bad reviews in its day but it was considered as a serious drama in the PEYTON PLACE genre.

Hard to believe maybe, but it was not made for laughs.

Thanks DR MATTH that's what I thought.

Make sure the TV you buy has the built-in HDTV receiver (ATSC and/or QAM will be in the specifications). That way, you simply attach rabbit ears to the back of your TV, let it scan the area for HDTV signals, and then you can see what the TV was really made to present.

Other then TFNM, al I can think of is BEYOND THE VALLEY OF THE DOLLS...I think that pushed a couple of envelopes.

Of course ATTACK OF THE PUPPET PEOPLE was the first movie to have June Kenney dressed in nothing but a paper napkin. It that is not envelope pushing cinema then I don't know what is.

I saw another film recently where the DVD included a different score. Can't think what it was. Anyone recall examples of this? I find it quite interesting.

The DVD of Ridley Scott's "Legend" features the film with its original score by Jerry Goldsmith and its U.S. replacement score by Goblin.

I don't know if the DVD will feature both scores on "Brother Sun, Sister Moon", but Riz Ortolani's original score is exquisite.  He also co-wrote songs with Donovan for its original release in Europe (and on the European soundtrack recording).

For U.S. release, however, Ortolani's score was taken out  Donovan wrote more songs to pepper through the film.  And music director Ken Thorne then took snippets of Ortolani's original score and selectively placed them in scenes he felt needed some dramatic oomph.  Even though it was Ortolani's original material he used, only Thorne got screen credit.

Good morning dear Esteemed, written, supped, written, mused, and "biceps-breaking-out-of-your-shirt" BK --

The dinner last night sounded absolutely FABULOUS, and it would have been such fun to be there.  I could have urged everyone to say FABULOUS as many times as possible.

I'm also sure I could have run up the bill with even more Crackerjack Shrimp !!

And I even would have been nice to Heather...... I AM a gentleman.
