Speaking of the Teddy Bears Picnic, Ben, my friend Roger also once sent me a compliation of about 25 different versions of the song Teddy Bears Picnic, having remembered fondly an old 78 of mine that used to get lots of play in our college days.

I also do as you do when going to London...try to stay up as late as I possbily can that first night, usually till ten or eleven, I've even gone to a show that first night.  Where are you coming from?...From La, it's about eight hours difference.  And I don't sleep particularly well on a plane.  I have learned it works better if one drinks less alcohol on the flight...but it's tough to refuse that free champagne and wine with dinner.

The lag usually hits me around the third or fourth night.  Lurching straight up, wide awake at three in the morning.  Though I've learned to fend it off with naps.  Around three or four, I usually return to the flat and doze for an hour or two before getting up for the night's theatre. And this is pretty refreshing. The last thing I want to do is snooze during a play.

Welcome to any new Gods today. Come on up. There are plenty of clouds for everyone, and I keep sweeping mine off hoping for some visitors. I guess the other gods have other things to occupy their existences.  :)

I only had LIMELIGHT on a taped-off-TV videotape, and was going to buy the one newly issues in the remastered Chaplin collection, but I read a review somewhere that said these new remasters had some problems and that one would do better with the previous Image releases on DVD, so I found a used one of those, and I've been very happy with it. Beautiful transfer to my eyes.

I'll echo Matt H's sentiments to the up-and-coming gods -- y'all come on up here!

There is a small issue....nothing major, really.  I'm afraid that all the loftiest clouds are taken...so you'll have to settle for living in "Baja Olympus."   Oh, it's a barely noticeable distance away.  Just a few miles down a windy current or so, but we have Sunday sociables you are welcome to come and enjoy.

MattH, post about the Chaplins over at The DVD Place and I'll explain what's wrong with the new transfers and I'll talk about the Image transfer.

Well, my internal clock is apparently on the fritz - not as bad as yesterday, but I still had to rush out of the house - did get here just before nine though, so all was well.  I like when all is well because a sick all is not something you'd ever want to be around.  So whiny.

JMK, good to see you back after your LONG absence.

By the way, I'm home sick today!

I know it's impossible to tell, but I have a multitude of ailments...really.

Cold feet and hands.  Sinus headache.  Sore throat.

I'm enjoying a very hot cup of coffee right now, but my toes are cold and Miss Vickie won't sit on my feet to warm them.

JRand53:  I think you have a very interesting observation on the Timothy Goebel controversy.

It's a controversy because Dick Button was just beside himself trying to find reasons for Goebel's problems, which Goebel calls "boot problems."  He's been through 13 pairs of boots and hasn't been able to skate well with any of them.

It's obvious, I believe, that it's a psychological issue.  And it may well be that Frank Carroll has despaired of Goebel rising to any higher "artistic" heights than his grinning in the "An American in Paris" routine which he skated for the 2002 Olympics, and has used ever since then until the current season.  He may be in a snit over that, too.  Probably thinks it's his signature routine and feels he should be able to skate it forever!

I'm not so in love with the Avenue Q cd.  It's cute, and it's funny, but the music and lyrics just don't stick with me (well, except for Trekkie Monster's changing choruses of "The Internet is for Porn," but I've promised der Brucer that I will only sing those in the shower).  Yes, we played it during the trip east, and I've listened to it maybe three other times, but it's kind of like the difference between Bat Boy and Urinetown, where one is fun but the other is something really worth revisiting (but I wouldn't like to live there).

I don't think there were any surprises in today's Tony decissions.  The big question for the spring meeting --- which could affect every other musical --- will be if ASSASSINS is considered a new musical or a revival.  There are reasons* to support either decision so at the moment none of the current musicals, new or revival, know if they will be competing with this show or not.   I would imagine if it is considered new and Sondheim's score is alowed to compete that the other new scores won't stand a chance, but a lot will depend on the production whether or not ASSASSINS could beat AVENUE Q and WICKED as Best Musical or WONDERFUL TOWN, LITTLE SHOP and FIDDLER as best revival.

* It has never been on Broadway, and its off-Broadway run was very limited, unlike LITTLE SHOP which ran for years, so it could be considered a New Musical like other off-Broadway transfers (most recently URINETOWN).

However it took almost fifteen years to open on Broadway during which time it has played countless engagements throughtout the country and all over the world.  Also this is a totally new production, not just a transfer so it might be decided that it is a Revival.

Good morning everyone!
Well, back at work bright and early this morning.  Quinncy (18 month old) took one look at me and burst into tears when i walked in the door.  What a homecoming :) But I'd expected such a reaction, and after 20 minutes of crying he was back to blowing raspberries on my stomach and laughing, and is now happily cuddled in my lap watching Barney while I type.  Tonight hopefully I shall be heading across the pass to see my dear family in Eburg.  Unless the pass is bad, in which case I won't.
Re - Teddy Bear's Picnic.  I had a record/storybook set of that when I was a kid.  It was one of those mini-records that I could play on a little record player, that i sitll have somewhere.  Ahh the good old days.

Was one of the versions of Teddy Bears Picnic Mr. Sondheim's title song to "Into the Woods"?

From tday's Liz Smith column:
"In our rave on "Beauty and the Beast," we mistakenly referred to composer Alan Menken as having passed away.  It was "B&B" lyricst Howard Ashman who died.  Menken is alive, well and working hard on various Disney projects.  Sincere regrets to all.

And this woman writes for two --- not just one --- major New York papers?

Liz is old, WEL!  And she has a staff of bright young things who, despite journalism degrees, have no concept of double-checking facts, looking up proper spellings....and absolutely no comprehension of rules of grammar.

I'm surmising that while Liz' name is on the column, much of what is in there was done by others.

Same thing has been true of many columnists as they aged.

Some years ago there was a correction in the Canadian Jewish News: "In last week's issue we had the wrong caption below the picture of Cardinal O'Connor and Rabbi Plotkin. It was Rabbi Plotkin [Chasidic], not Cardinal O'Connor, who was making the moitzie [Hebrew prayer for bread] over the chalah." (Maybe you had to see it.)

Is there really any chance that Assassins could be considered a New Musical?  That makes no sense to me whatsoever.

Btw, I'm guessing that DRs Emily and Andrea are frozen somewhere :(

Or maybe Emily got her new haircut and won't come out to play anymore! ;)

(DR Emily - do keep us informed on what you decide)

Oh, and the show, as has been pointed out, is not the Penn and Teller show, which is what I did last year - this show is called Cowboy U.

That said, I may be doing a couple of things for this season's Penn and Teller show.  We shall see.

Good morning. Two months ago today I arrived back in LA. Something fabulous is going to happen today. I feel it in me bones.

Panni,
I'm heading out soon to get some lottery tickets for tonight's $17.5 million (Canadian) draw. Give me four or five numbers between one and 47 and, if I get them in time, I'll combine them with my choices. We'll split the prize.

Back from Lunch. I had a over long meeting before lunch so I went home and regressed. Instead of a healthy lunch I had a peanut butter and jelly sandwich (chunky peanut butter and strawberry jam). At least the bread was whole grain with 3 grams of fiber and I had a glass of decaffinated iced tea and an apple as well.

I will listen this afternoon to the Noel Coward Album (his New York cabaret and Las Vegas acts). He is one of my personal faves. I shall always be grateful to DRs TomovOz and Jason for their help in filling out my CD collection with Mr. Coward's work.
