Jose, thanks so much for the hotel info and all that info about the Metro and Union Station and Shirlington.

(I couldn't get that Metro link to work but I found what you were talking about re the Metro in a book I had here.  Your advice is much more practical than the book.)

DR FJL - Well... Just in case you still need it, want to check it out...

http://www.wmata.com

-is the link for the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority.

*And if you do make Metro Center your hub, it does pay to take the few "calm" seconds to look around and get your bearings each time you get off the train.  Going out the right exit can be tricky at times, but if you keep track of your cross streets - and whether or not your exit has artwork/booths/etc. - it makes it much easier to get to your destination once you're above ground.  The exit signs are indicated by the cross streets.  Also, if you happen to take the Orange/Blue Line to Metro Center, then that also involves heading up to the upper level where the Red Line is to exit... And if you happen to head up the wrong set of escalators... Well, it's easy to walk back down and to the other side, but if you're in a hurry...  -Oh, and the same would apply to the Chinatown/Gallery Place/MCI Center stop.  And they're you're dealing with a couple of different sets of escalators and some slightly confusing signage.

DR Rodzinksi - So, was/is Kati Roll Company that is closing this Friday?

Did they run out of Kats?

I fear they are closing tomorrow. Let me know if you want to meet up for lunch there. They are moving to 39th between 5/6 but won't be open till mid-July.

Affordable restaurants are becoming impossible to find in Times Square.

Ah, gotcha.  *I do like John's Shanghai too along that strip, as well as Margon, the Cuban lunch counter.

There were strawberries, cherries and pineapple for breakfast at work.

I am now feeling very fruitful.

Jose - Is it a safe neighborhood?

And do you recommend we find a less confusing hotel location than the Courtyard Convention Center?    Or is it the best we'll do for copmbo of price and convenience to Union Station?

DR FJL - There's a Gordon-Biersch basically attached to that Marriott too.  If you want some good - and lethal(!) - Garlic Fries, that's the place for you!  -However, there's also that great little French place across the street from Ford's Theatre, Bistro D'Oc.  Decent food, decent prices.  And it even has the stamp of approval from the HHW Granddads, SWW and DerBrucer.

-But you're also in a great neighborhood for eating in general, so... Jaleo, Tenh Penh, District Chophouse (great onion rings!), Zaytinya, Oyamel, indebleu, etc., etc., etc.

Also, Jose, is our hotel convenient to the Woolly Mammoth?

(I should have hired you as a trip planner.  :) )

It's a safe neighborhood.  I think they did finally close the big nightclubs across the street and around the corner, but if they didn't, then at least you know they'll be police and security in the area at night on the weekends.  -It doesn't get dangerous, there's just always issues with parking and traffic.

There is, however, lots of construction on the block, so it may not be the most picturesque area in DC right now.  But it's getting back into shape.

And as far as Union Station... I believe you're only one or two "zones" away from Union Station, so the cab ride would be $9.75 tops.  And the cab stand at Union Station is pretty well run and monitored, and the cabbies are always hacking for fares around the hotels.  So, unless you're planning on exploring the outer reaches of DC Metro's system, cabs might not be a bad way to go.

*Oh, I keep meaning to say... I believe the closest station to the hotel is the Chinatown/Gallery Place station.  That station is on the Green/Yellow Line.  Metro Center is on the Red Line.  So, if you did a station by station "map", it would instruct you to change trains at Metro Center and/or L'Enfant Plaza to get you close - well, closest - to your hotel.  However, if you take the Red Line from Union Station to Metro Center, and then get out on the F Street Side, it's just a two and a half block walk to your hotel.  If you run the addresses through on Metro's website, you'll see what I mean.

Yes, it is.  I'd say two blocks up and two blocks over.  Or something very close to that.

Good morning!

Despite a late evening shower, it didn't cool off here, and I didn't get to open up the house to fresh air. I do fear now that it will be fall before that happens again unless we have an unusual cool spell.

It's been a busy morning, so I'll enjoy my relaxing viewing afternoon even more today.

I guess it'll be THE FAMILY STONE off the DVR. I want to rewatch THE CLOSER, too. Once the mail comes, I'll be able to watch something from the CAMP CLASSICS sets. Haven't decided what as yet.

Tonight is the last night of the Gay Images in Film series on TCM. I have enjoyed the series as it introduced me to at least half a dozen films I had never seen before. And even when they were rotten, they were nevertheless instructive on the treatment of gay themes in films down through the decades.

Forgot to mention that the next episode of RESCUE ME comes on tonight. That reminds me that I also have last night's MY LIFE ON THE D-LIST to watch today, too, and I'll do that before I start THE FAMILY STONE.

Our esteemed host previously noted:
Quote
The first HP book in its original first UK edition had under 2000 copies printed, the bulk of which went to libraries and schools and it's why that one sometimes goes for twenty to twenty-five thousand bucks (although the HP market in firsts has dropped significantly over the last few years).

HERE IS AN UPDATE

Quote
Potter Book Sells for $18,000 at Auction
AP

LONDON (June 26) - A first edition Harry Potter book fetched $18,000 at auction Tuesday.

The winning bid for the first novel by J.K. Rowling that launched Pottermania went to an anonymous buyer. Bonhams auctioneers had estimated the book would sell for between $10,000 and $20,000.

First editions of "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone" - published in the United States as "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" - are valuable because of their rarity, the auction house said. The publishers produced between 500 and 1,000 copies in the book's first run.

I enjoyed THE FAMILY STONE

It sounded like something I would like since I'm always intrigued by interesting characters and characters who reveal bits and pieces of their personalities as a film runs.

If I don't get to it this afternoon, I'll watch it tonight.

Good morning, all!  After a whole afternoon and evening of dusting, washing windows, and inhaling - I'm sure - many toxic fumes, my sinuses are clogged and my head feels stuffed with cotton batting.

I have yet to finish dusting the CDs, sweeping the floors,  and mopping after cleaning out the bathroom before I can spread broken glass, nails, and other uncomfortable items all over the fire escape.

Well, except for the last part, that is all so sweet! I feel welcomed already!
