BEWITCHED, BOTHERED, AND BEWILDERED
« on: July 09, 2007, 12:04:28 AM »

Well, you've read the notes, the notes were bewitched, bothered, and bewildered, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're frankly bothered that they're bewitched and bewildered.

I'm playing one of the CDs I got - remember when I spoke so highly of a singer named Trijntje Oosterhouse and her CD of Bacharach songs?  I found another CD by her, this one called Strange Fruit, a live album (that sounds like a studio album - that's how well it's recorded), with full symphony orchestra.  She's just amazing, and the orchestrations and arrangements are really interesting and lush.  The album is a blending of songs made famous by Billie Holiday and song written by Gershwin.

Here's what I bought at Amoeba in April, DVD-wise:

MANCHURIAN CANDIDATE (the original)
THE CREEPING FLESH
TOURIST TRAP

and some documentaries:
EXPO (about the Chicago World's Fair, narrated by Gene Wilder)
THE BERLIN AIRLIFT
THE Z CHANNEL, A MAGNIFICENT OBSESSION
ANARCHISM IN AMERICA

AND THE BARGAIN OF ALL BARGAINS:
THE COURT JESTER and bonus movie THE MAGIC SWORD in a cardboard case...only $1!

Margaret Cho is funny. She is touring with Cyndi Lauper and is here in LA so she performed at this comedy improve club. They probably begged her to come.

Although I laughed quite a lot, I felt that much of her material was very much the same material everyone uses. Making fun of the republicans, conservatives, the press, race, and sex. I can certainly say that I am curious how her audience responds in other states.

TOD:
Favorite F.S. Movies:
MANCHURIAN CANDIDATE (or MANCHURIAN CANDIED DATES, on Oscar night)
SUDDENLY
GUYS AND DOLLS
A HOLE IN THE HEAD
ON THE TOWN

Anyone who has seen our MUSIC MAN documentary knows that Sinatra was the original choice for the movie role of HAROLD HILL.

Can you imagine? I can't. Robert Preston was born to play that role!

I hate to be the one to tell you, but THE COURT JESTER is not a documentary about Bush.

PS When you reach 5,000 (posts, not years) will you wear that millstone around your neck?

Well, we've gotten our first blurb for the new book, by our very own Pogue, who has blurbed me before, which always makes me happy.  Here it is:

"In MURDER AT HOLLYWOOD HIGH: AN ADRIANA HOFSTETTER MYSTERY,   Bruce Kimmel offers a protagonist as enjoyable as his inimitable Benjamin Kritzer.  As he did in the Kritzer trilogy, Kimmel celebrates and commiserates with awkward adolescence...an out-of-water odd duck marching to the off-beat of her own quirky drummer.  And that drummer is playing lots of rim-shots, because in this tale of Ms. Hofstetter, teenage misfit and amateur sleuth, the Kimmel wit and wry observation spill across every page like circus clowns spilling out of one of those tiny cars.  I'd have read this book twice as fast if I hadn't been constantly interrupted by my own laughter."

I'm reading REWIND right now, which is my before-bedtime book. Maybe that's why I can't sleep. IT MAKES ME SO ANGRY and brings up feelings from our David and Goliath battle with the city and the evil developer.

Oh, I forgot to add to my Amoeba list:

A DVD of Billy Squier music videos that I meant to give my girlfriend when she was here. These videos are so laughably bad that when we worked in music video, it was our gold standard.

Too bad Billy Squier was such a nice guy in person... we couldn't ridicule him without feeling bad about it.

A classic 80's video: "Rock Me Tonight"! You only need to watch the first minute to get it!

Enjoy!

No, he's the one on the left of the 3 guys on the couch. The pickle guy, from CROSSING DELANCY, and also in LOCAL HERO. I think he's very good!
