I also had to spend a bit of time at City Center today. No, I did not see
Gypsy again today - although I was very tempted too since they still had a slew of tickets left for tonight's Opening. Instead, I was at City Center trying to find someone who could help me locate my business card holder that I left in the theatre last night. I had called this morning, and nothing had been turned into the Lost & Found, but they also told me that the Theatre Manager and the House Manager weren't in yet, and any L&F items may still be in their offices. So, around 3:00, I headed back over to City Center to see if I could go ahead and get back into the theatre, and check for myself. Well...
I went to the Box Office... Where I was then directed to go to the Stage Door Security Desk... Where I was then asked to sign in and go up to the 9th Floor Administration Offices... Where a most helpful executive assistant, Alex, tried to locate the on-duty Theatre Manager... Well, after she had called around a few places, she then called back down to the security desk, and was told that I could just be escorted into the theatre and go check my seat location from last night. Well...
Once I got back down to the desk, the security guard started to walk me in, but as soon as we got buzzed into the backstage area, her supervisor came in after us and said that since a rehearsal was going on, the theatre was closed. So, we headed back to the security desk... Where some of the staff were arguing back and forth about what someone had said earlier in the day regarding access to the loading dock. This went on and on for a few minutes. "So, what should I do now?" I asked. -Well, let me try to reach the Theatre Manager. At that point the other supervisor spoke up again, and told the guard to try her cell phone. -She's not here right now, but her cell phone number is right there. So... What does the security guard do? He gets on the intercom and walkie-talkie system asking for the Theatre Manager.

After a couple of repeated pages - and some more arguing about the use of the loading dock - the security guard calls down to his supervisor who informs him again to call the Theatre Manager on her cell phone. So... The security guard tries the cell phone... No answer. Tries again... No answer... Then more arguing with the other guard about the loading dock...
"Um.. Excuse me, so what should I do now?" -Well, just write down your info here on this piece of paper, and we'll have someone get back to you later. OK...
Then I asked what time would the House Manager be in tonight... -7:30. "But, the show is at 6:30 tonight." -Oh, you're right. Well, I guess 6:00-ish then. So...
I make my way back around to the Box Office, and ask the friendly gentleman behind the window what time the House Manager would be in. -She'll be in at 6:00 for the 6:30 show. OK - although, 6:00 seems a little late for me for a 6:30 curtain, and an Opening Night to boot.
So, since I had a few errands to run around midtown, I took care of those, and then head back to the City Center around 5:45. I ask if the House Manager is available... -Not until 6:00. Hmm... OK. Then I start noticing various ushers and assistants walking in and out of the lobby doors, and I just eventually walk in and ask where the House Manager is.. -Right over there.
I explain my situation to her, and she says that once the theatre is open, that it would be OK to run upstairs and look for myself. Well... The opened the doors at 6:00, but the theatre proper did not open until 6:15.
And to bring this somewhat shaggy dog story to a close, I did not find my business card holder. And, yes, I'm a little bummed about it. I've actually had it for a couple of years, and it was really "cool", and just perfect for my needs. Of course, besides my business cards and some cards from other people, I used to keep my MetroCard for the subway, and, of course, I had just bought a new one yesterday for the week. -And, of course, you can't request a credit for a One Week MetroCard, only 30-day one. In any case...
Maybe I'll get a call from the lost and found office tomorrow telling me they found it, and that I can go pick it up. Or I may just head down to Tumi or Macy's or Sak's or Business Card Cases 'R' Us and buy a new one. However, I really do like the one I had/lost. And since I bought it in Richmond, and since I'm heading down there next week, well... We'll see. *Although, I do have to admit that I already did check at Sak's and the MoMA Design Store... And the Tumi store was already closed by the time I went by there.
Basta!
