Well the FIRST show I saw in color, since our television was delivered on a Saturday was the hellacious MIDWESTERN HAYRIDE from the WLW-I outlet on Channel 13 - also the ABC station.

Oh my gosh, I'm paging though this cook book and so many recipes are just like Mom made!

For example:

Cucumber Salad
 2 medium unpeeled cucumbers, thinly sliced
1/3 cup cider or white vinegar
1/3 cup water
2 tablespoons sugar
½ teaspoon salt
1/8 teaspoon pepper
Chopped fresh dill weed or parsley, if desired.

Place cucumbers in small glass or plastic bowl.
In tightly covered container, shake remaining ingredients except dill weed.  Pour over cucumbers.  Cover and refrigerate at least 3 hours to blend flavors.
Drain cucumbers.  Sprinkle with dill weed.
Store covered in refrigerator.


I can’t begin to tell you how many times Mom made that (except for the dill weed or parsley).  I LOVE this book!

The County of Alameda had a massive layoff about 15 years ago.  A lot of folks were laid off who were tenured, but didn't have as much time as folks who kept their jobs.

Money was tight statewide and we weren't getting state support (as we are constitutionally SUPPOSED to be) from the tax coffers, so the County was forced to cut its throat, so to speak.  A lot of folks in clerical/finance positions were let go, only to be rehired as temps, but without the medical/dental/retirement benefits.  

In the mid-1990s, the unions became very active, especially the SEIU, and demanded that the County do something about the incredibly large TEMP workforce, especially in light of the County having become fiscally solvent and having become engaged in buying buildings and constructing same.

We now have a very meager temp force...and there are strong union-demanded guidelines that have been put into place that make it nearly inconceivable such layoffs will occur again.

Never say never, though.

Do any DRs have an HP printer using ink cartridges 56 or 57? I've got several new cartridges I can no longer use and the HP store or customer service is no help about exchanging them for the cartidges my new printer uses, so I have some freebies to give away or toss out.

Cassie Kubinski played Mirette in the Jones-Schmidt show when I scored it for Goodspeed.  Lord, that was 9 years ago! She's been through college by now.

Yes - and she is beautiful and sings wonderfully.  She also had a dance number in a bar in one of the scenes, which should be something to see when the film is released.

That's exactly what is happening where I work now.  I'm just praying that 8 years of service will put me above the cut line.

I've never heard of this. I don't think Comcast is to blame. I'm guessing the engineer at the station forgot to throw the high def switch and that's why it was broadcast in SD. Happens here occasionally with almost all of the various stations, and I get VERY bent out of shape when it does. I complained so much to the ABC affiliate that the engineer gave me his direct phone number at the station to call if it ever happens during prime time.

Good for you!  Have you used that number yet, and did it work?

DR Julie - Thanks for the movie info.  I'm looking forward to seeing it, and have heard good things about from some of your cast members (Becca, Asa, etc.).

-Frankly, if I had somehow ended up working on the movie, I don't think I would have been able to make it through your final "gallery" scene without breaking down in tears every couple of minutes.  Heck, I still get emotional whenever I head down to the Financial District and start to sense that I'm near Ground Zero.  However, it looks like "Clear Blue Tuesday" will finally "help" me with that.  Sounds like a true Labor of Love.  And of Honor.

I remember your telling me that you knew several of the people involved in the movie and had been hearing about it from them.  It was very emotional to work on that movie.  Everyone connected with it, cast and crew, had some kind of personal 9/11 story.  That final scene - and to be overlooking ground zero like that, was particularly emotional.  It was, indeed, a labor of love for pretty much all involved.
