TOD:

Definitely TWILIGHT ZONE. I can't imagine anyone my age or thereabouts who didn't live for Friday nights.

I also agree with HAVE GUN WILL TRAVEL, completely unique.

I'd add THE UNTOUCHABLES.

I have a very busy day ahead of me. In addition to attempting to finsh THE ODD COUPLE box set by the end of the evening (which will be about 10 episodes), I have a bit of writing to do and some phone calls to make that will be lengthy.

A friend has asked me to help him find a 32" LCD set for his den, so I'm busy scouring the internet for the best combination of price and quality. After I make that decision, we may head out today or tomorrow to see the set in person at Best Buy or Circuit City.

And, of course, I have last night's MONK on the DVR, but I doubt I'll even get to it today.

Yes, I remember those covers of PETER GUNN and MR. LUCKY for the RCA Victor Record Club. They weren't offered for the Columbia Record Club that I was a member of. I liked Columbia's Broadway cast album selection better which is why I joined that club rather than RCA's version.

Later I joined a record club that didn't use monthly cards to return or automatic selection. Instead of a little magazine each month with selections, we had the entire Schwann catalog as our book of choice. On top of all that, the LPs were discounted and shipping was far less than with Columbia or RCA. True, you didn't get a bunch of free LPs for joining, but there was no membership period. Once you joined, you were always a member. I can't tell you how many hundreds of dollars I spent with that club, and I can't even remember the name of it now.

Anybody know what I'm talking about?

DR MattH - I think we used something like that to order records for the library where I had my first professional job, but I can't remember the name either!  This would have been in the 1970's?

BK, I have usually found that the going rate for a book dealer is to offer about one fourth of a book's worth. It's why I'd never sell any books to dealers (and that I wouldn't sell anyway, but if I had to...I'd get me a page on the ABE).  But if I were trying to buy books from someone else, I'd certainly try to get them cheap as I can.  My greatest coups have been buying books from dealers that they had underpriced.  One of my favourites was buying a rare Rider Haggard bibliography off those old price-gougers at Heritage Bookshop for $75 that was worth over $200.  Another was buying a off the internet William Goldman's YOUR TURN TO CURTESY, MY TURN TO BOW (in dj) for six bucks (about eight with shipping and handling) when every other copy I saw of it was going for about $350-375.  Those kinds of coups are getting tougher though.

A show I remember fondly from my youth that I've recently been revisiting on TV that doesn't quite hold up to memory (though it's still fun) is BURKE'S LAW.  But a couple of weeks ago they aired an episode written by Harlan Ellison that was heads and shoulders above the others I had seen.  Just very funny and full of Harlanisms, " You bet your antimacassar"..."I need you like another set of elbows"...lots of pithy bon mots and full of witty alliterative toss-offs.

Late 1960s to mid-1970s, I'm thinking.

In that regard, let me add THE ADVENTURES OF ROCKY THE FLYING SQUIRREL. Unique looking and the wit/satire quotient was unmatched and remains so to this day.

Now, I guess it's time to head on downstairs, make up the bed, check the mail, and begin thinking about what's for lunch.

(leaving out the great Drama showcases like:

Playhouse 90
Actor's Studio
Kraft TV Theatre
Philco Playhouse
Four Star Playhouse)

I'll start with:

Alfred Hitchcock Presents
Dragnet
Suspense

I was a big fan of RAWHIDE, MAVERICK & CHEYENNE.  Also enjoyed, THE TWILIGHT ZONE and IRONSIDE.

But, the sad truth is that the quality of television has improved so much over the last decade or so, that few (if any) pre-1980s series hold up today.

I've revisited most of my favorites on DVD during the past couple of years and, almost without exception, was disappointed in what I saw.

Our memories are much kinder to these shows than the passage of time.

Hello.
Good morning.

Just checking in to wish everyone a good Saturday.

I'm off to see Slaughterhouse Five later this afternoon, and then meeting up with Jose to see Liz Callaway tonight.   And a bunch of errands, too.  Lots to do today.

Catch up with you all later.

1980's! I'm working with the 1950s :D

Unfortunately much of the best of 1950s TV, like Kraft Television Theatre, has been lost.
