Oh, and I dislike the new Annie recording intensely.  More thoughts, perhaps, after I've had a chance to finish the whole thing.

Good Grief - No Val Kilmer?

He was supposed to be featured in our second half, but he missed the red-eye after bk's "do" last night.

Still, we had 5 choirs, a pianist, a rock ensemble, a fife and drum core, a world premiere, and a cast of 40!

Who's the musical director?  P.D.Q. Bach?

And speaking of travel... My roommate's aunt is flying back to Portland, OR, later today.  We just checked the weather reports, and it looks the thunderstorms that may be due in later today will be coinciding with her departure time.  :-\

Earlier today Yesterday afternoon, I bought some blank mini-DVDs for no other reason than they were on sale.  They're mainly for DVD camcorders and hold about 20 minutes on XP or 60 minutes on LP.  I have a mini-laserdisc called "The Manhattan Transfer - The Singles I."  It's essentially four songs taken from their live from Japan in 1986 concert.  It's about 18 minutes total.  I didn't know if the mini-DVD would work with my DVD burner but it did!  I don't really have anything else to record onto these mini-DVDs, but if I do, I'll be ready. ;)

George, be very careful today!  I read that several dealerships have Cadillac Esplanades on sale this week.  DON'T buy one, just because it is on sale.

But think of all the CDs he could buy with the money he saved!

With George's IKEA sensibilities and trusty tool box, I suspect he'd buy an Esplanade kit!

I remember going to the Jerry Lewis Cinema to see WICKED WICKED because the previews promised a revolutionary NEW process....that couldn't be shown during the preview......

Still not quite sure what it was.....two 35mm images printed on one BIG frame.....it wasn't very successful anyway.

Maybe if they had done THE ROBE in DuoVision, it might have caught on.

Perhaps they could have done THE ROBE and DEMETRIUS AND THE GLADIATIORS at the same time.  It would have saved me a quarter.

Oh, and I dislike the new Annie recording intensely.  More thoughts, perhaps, after I've had a chance to finish the whole thing.

I've given the new recording a few casual listens myself, and I'm not sure I like it or not. -And it's been interesting reading some of the online reactions and reviews too.  It sounds OK, but... Well.. I've never been such a big fan of the show as it is so...  :-\

The voices, in general, sound a bit too closely mic'd, and I would have also preferred a little bit more "bloom" around the vocals.  They also seemed to be EQ'd toward the high end.  -The girl playing Annie is, unfortunately, a sort of casualty of the EQ since so much of the orphan's writing, in general, is on the high side of things.  (I always get shocked when I see the original key for "It's A Hard Knock Life"!) The orchestra sounds good, but the over-abundance of strings - and the extra brass - tend to add bit too much at times - the big endings are REALLY BIG!  Annie just doesn't work well with the "symphonic" treatment.  -At least a symphonic treatment of the original orchestrations.

And then there's the second disc of Annie 2 material... Complete with narration and "interruptions" by Carol Burnett and Martin Charnin... ???  And the cover art for Annie 2 - a battered and bruised and bandaged Little Orphan Annie - is also a bit funny and sort of disturbing too.

Hello, everyone.

Nothing new here. Marvelous Matt is here, attempting to repair my walls and celings. The walls haven't fully dried out after all the rain, so that's slowing us down. I hit the garden early this morning, pruning the trees that my Neighbor Who Does Nothing doesn't maintain. I've learned that it's simply easier to maintain his property myself than to try to get him to do anything. He won't complain; he won't even notice.

There is a real art to recording vocals after the band has been recorded, and then mixing them to sound as if it's all of a piece and had been recorded at the same time - an art that that particular producer, whatever one thinks of him, has never learned, at least based on the recordings of Sherry and Breakfast at Tiffany's.  And he takes months and months to mix.

It's even a bit too high for Jason Castro, I think.

I remember helping out with some auditions for Annie a few years ago... It was then that I realized that the only way for the orphans to sing "It's A Hard Knock Life" was to constantly belt/yell it out since it's written in a high(!) belt range.  It does work for the song, but after listening to about 300 girls try to squeak out those notes, well... OUCH!
