For ask bk day: I went to a spook show last Saturday night. One of our local indie theatres does this once a month. After the spook show, (which was more like a parody of spook shows but still fun) they showed a pristine print of Jacques Tournier's CURSE OF THE DEMON (the uncut British version).

My question: Did you ever go to spook shows and if so, which was the most memorable and why?

I love Curse Of The Demon.  I don't think I ever went to a spook show, the kind they did at midnight.  I always wanted to, but never did.  I do remember seeing the ads for them.

This morning I absolutely did NOT want to get up. It took a while to unwind after that 2.5 hour teleconference meeting, and 4 a.m. came awfully early. It rained during the night, so I had a muddy walk this morning. Then I did some yard work.

Another ask bk: Would you consider staging THE BRAIN with the Atlanta lyric theatre? They will be taking up residence at the newly restored Strand Theatre in Marietta. The coming season:
Disneys Beauty & The Beast
Smokey Joe's Cafe
The It Girl
The Pirates of Penzance
Chicago
You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown (by Atlanta Junior Lyric)

I think it would go over really well, and they have some great singers/actors in the company!

I'd do it in a second - and if they're doing The It Girl, which has had less productions than The Brain they could certainly do The Brain.  Suggest it - I'll get them a CD and script.

I see that JRand is having his cake and eating it, too.

Jack, I had a computer tarot reading yesterday. Normally, the computer readings make little sense to me--they're just too vague--but this one made a lot of sense! Must be because it was on your birthday, huh?

Oh, and I'm up.  Overcast outside (first time in a week), but I'm sure it will burn off soon.  I'm going to try and start jogging by nine-thirty so I don't have to rush to get ready for lunch at Langer's.

I have been listening to a recording of Dance a Little Closer.  Usually I really enjoy both Charles Strouse's and Alan Jay Lerner's work, but I must admit I find little of redeeming value here.  The recording features a post-Sweeney Len Cariou and Lerner's eighth wife, Liz Robertson.

Deadline nears on proposed L.A. County toll lanes

Quote
California lawmakers must approve a plan on the shared use of carpool lanes on the 110 and 10 freeways soon or risk losing federal funds for the project.

By Patrick McGreevy
Los Angeles Times Staff Writer

August 27, 2008

SACRAMENTO — State lawmakers are moving to allow lone motorists to use carpool lanes on congested stretches of the 110 and 10 freeways -- for a fee.

Vehicles carrying more than one person could still cruise in those lanes without charge under a proposal under consideration by the Legislature.

The measure must be passed by midnight Sunday or the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority risks losing a $210.6-million federal grant that would pay for toll plazas, road and rail improvements, and a fleet of clean-fuel buses that would run as a rapid line along the route.

"What will be extraordinary about this will be the impacts it will achieve in terms of traffic congestion relief, economic development and jobs, and the obvious environmental impacts it will have," said state Sen. Mark Ridley-Thomas (D-Los Angeles).

Ridley-Thomas, who is running for a seat on the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, wrote legislation to implement the project with the federal money.

He gutted a bill that previously addressed high-speed rail and inserted the proposal for toll lanes.

The proposal, approved by the Assembly Transportation Committee this week, is already sparking controversy.

"This reflects a view that if you have money, you get to go in the fast lane and if you don't you are stuck in congestion," Sen. Jenny Oropeza (D-Long Beach) said during a Senate debate.

Comment to Ms Oropeza: No, you socialist nitwit, it means if you want added convenience you pay for it!

I have been insanely busy since virtually the moment we returned.  Over the past few days I have managed to squeeze out arrangements/recordings of all the fun heavy metal stuff I'll be doing with the Pacific Pops this fall (still have my McGuire Sisters-esque "American Idiot" to do, if I have time), written reviews of several hideous to middling films (hint:  don't bother with The Scorpion King 2, trust me), and done a PR blitz for the upcoming Performing Arts series I'm hosting starting in September.  I'm very tired.  :)

And I'm here to tell you it would make no difference whatsoever to traffic congestion.  I drove in those lanes repeatedly during rush hour when I was doing the Brain in Anaheim, and they were frequently WORSE than the normal lanes.

You know how I always say AOL is being retarded - today Safari is being retarded and AOL is working just fine.  Certain websites are fine on Safari, but others won't load properly, which they will load perfectly on AOL.

It could be so much worse. I sat through it! Oy.

I just heard from DR Ginny; she and Richard have arrived. I thought she was calling to ask if I wanted anything brought from Ohio. I would have said Lady M's head.

CHEERS: THE CLOSER GOES FOR A CRUZ
Cheers to The Closer for giving Raymond Cruz a shot. The versatile actor (My Name is Earl, Training Day), who's often overshadowed by the showier members of the TNT drama's ensemble, stepped into the spotlight with an episode in which his character, Det. Julio Sanchez, lost his brother in a drive-by shooting. The story line was a cliché — Deputy Chief Johnson (Kyra Sedgwick) warned him not to investigate because he was too close to the case, but Sanchez wouldn't listen — yet Cruz impressively ran a gamut of emotions from panic to shock to rage to grief. Perhaps it's no coincidence the episode was directed by another skilled actor, Kevin Bacon (Sedgwick's husband). He brought out the best in Cruz.

Nice to see Kevin Bacon getting some credit!

Well, you're right - once things really get jammed - Gornisht helfn!

However, in the "shoulder hours' - (when the rush is just beginning, or after it starts to taper off) - moving some vehicles from the regular to to HOV lanes should help even out the traffic flow.
