I'm back from a very funny and smart NYMF show, IDAHO, which is to Rodgers and Hammerstein what THE BRAIN FROM PLANET X is to PLAN 9 FROM OUTER SPACE and other 1950s sci-fi films. Set in the new state of Idaho, the big conflict is whether or not mail order bride Cassie will end up with the evil Jed or the potato grower Whip. The big clambake is the Spudbake Festival, and Aunt Pearl gets the big "Never Walk Alone" number. The choreography was brilliant: lots of Agnes deMille, a silly dream ballet, and an act two "twister ballet" in which a tornado ruins a crop of potatos. I laughed myself silly and thought how much JRand58 would have been delighted by its intelligent nonsense.
