Facebook has reunited me with my darling (and beautiful) niece, Tracy, who grew up in Wasilla (yes, that one).  Sarah Palin's father was her 5th grade teacher!  Luckily that hasn't influenced her vote.

I just took Sassy to the vet because she has been drooling for a couple of days. Turns out she has a broken jaw, probably caused from a fall. Poor old gal. Treatment is soft food and a recheck in a month to see if it heals itself.

Mr. Bakalor just showed me how to do the purge - but because the bulk of the purge would have to be on the old board, I only did from this new board - we're fine for now, and as we go along I think I can just maintain this board.

Well, it looks like my Thanksgiving plans are screwed: I just spoke to the lady in charge of the property closing and she says it will be another week or two because of God knows what legalities besides the goddam county and stupid beauraucrats. Given that the offer said a six-eight week period is moving into twelve weeks pisses me off a great deal.

I'm sorry you won't be going for Thanksgiving.  It may be a small blessing in disguise, aside from the higher cost of flying then the chances of getting stranded are far greater this year.  Around 3,000 have been canceled making the possibility of delays turning into cancellations.

How old is Sassy?  I always felt so bad for the cats as high jumps became more difficult to make.  Their expressions were so filled with indignity.

Thank goodness for the sunshine which has helped to warm up the house considerably without having to turn on the heat. Once I opened things up, the house temp rose 4 degrees. That's a BIG help.

I watched SHREK THE HALLS. The 22 minutes or so of program are very frantic and noisy, also a very haphazard story that's just not very funny. So, my basic feelings about the show after I saw it last holiday season really haven't changed much.

There are pleasures: Antonio Bandaras's Puss-n-Boots has been my favorite since the character was introduced in the second film, and even though his part is fairly small in this, he's a joy to hear and Puss is animated so humorously. Eddie Murphy's Donkey wears out his raucous welcome SO FAST.

The DVD looks great.

The bonus features are mostly related to MADAGASCAR rather than SHREK. There are two singalongs with new lyrics to "Twelve Days of Christmas" and "Deck the Halls" with penguin-slanted lyrics. There's a preschool Gingy game. And a DVD-ROM plug for a SHREK video game. And there is the same Dreamworks animated jukebox (song clips from their various animated movies) that's hawking the movies on DVD and Blu-ray that have been on other Dreamworks discs.

I forgot to mention what I watched as I cooked and ate lunch: RAISING THE BAR. I had read about the gay storyline, so I recorded last night's show and watched it today. The show is OK. Not great, thrilling legal drama, but it's OK. Pretty actors to be sure.

After I finished my work with SHREK, I put on a Charlie Chan movie: CHARLIE CHAN AT THE WAX MUSEUM. I saw it many years ago, but I didn't remember who the murderer was, and I did not guess it correctly. Darn!

The transfer with its medium amount of grain looked nice. When they put those disclaimers at the front of a movie saying they used the best available material, it makes you think it's going to look awful. This didn't at all.

Then, I got all the shows I wanted to record tonight set on the DVR. I'll start watching about 8:25 or so, and will do NCIS, FRINGE, and ELI STONE tonight. Others will be seen later.

I skimmed through today's AS THE WORLD TURNS. Nothing, but Luke was in the previews for tomorrow, back to the election story.

I had a good session at physical therapy; they added one new exercise, so I'm now doing three different exercises along with the ultrasound, deep heat and electroshock treatments. 

Losing weight is really going to help all this wonderful therapy you have been receiving.

I have not stopped yet today, and that is NOT what I wanted.  I did do the long jog, which was actually pretty easy today.  When I got back, I had to deal with one particular annoyance, which I dealt with quickly, then I had to do my quick errand, which took about twenty minutes longer than it should have due to someone's inexperience.  I then came home and did the postage for all the single disc orders - I can't do the rest until I actually have the CDs.  Then I heard that I actually won't have the CDs today - they'll be finished around four, but that's after their driver has done his final run.  That is really annoying to me, so I'll have them tomorrow - the problem with that, of course, is that I'm rehearsing from 10 to 3.  So, when I get home at three-fifteen I'll pack up as many as I can (certainly all the single disc orders) and get those and as many others as possible out of here, then I'll have to deliver a box around five, then I'll have to get ready to go to the LACC opening night, so tomorrow's going to be absolutely insane and all because they didn't finish our order early enough to be delivered when it was supposed to be.  I also have to make a serious decision whether to squeeze in one more Kritzerland limited edition CD this year - I'm just not sure if I'm up to it or not - it would be really tight to get it ready and to have them so they can all be shipped prior to Christmas.  I'll have to figure it out.

My noontime presentation went well and I even managed to do a couple of errands on the way home.  One of them was grocery shopping and now I'm going to make tuna glop for dinner.

TOD - my favorite cole slaw is made by the wife of one of DH Richard's honor guard compatriots.  She makes it for the American Legion fish fries, which they have on alternating Fridays.

We got Sassy in the spring of 1999. She is a foster reject. She had an attitude. Luckily she mellowed with age. She loves my son and he loves her.

I never order French Onion Soup any more when I'm at a restaurant.  I can do it so much better, following Julia Child's recipe from Mastering the Art of French Cooking.  She does not add tarragon.  She does not add any herbs at all.  The soup consists of good beef stock and onions that have been slowly caramelized right there in the pot.  Top it off with some crispy toasts and good cheese, under the broiler, and perhaps a splash of sherry (here we do differ from Julia, because I don't like cognac), and a salad on the side, and that's a wonderful dinner.  The leftovers can make a great braising liquid for pot roast, by the way, or you can reheat it and have a second bowl of soup a day or so later.

I once started to make Onion Soup using Julia's recipe, and I don't remember if i did something wrong or if I got interrupted, but I ended up with a whole pot of (almost) caramelized onions and wine.  At that point, it couldn't be turned into soup, so I froze the stuff in about 10 different bowls and used it for months as the basis for sauce when cooking beef or chicken.  It was great.

The best potato salad:  mine.  It started out as a recipe for Potato Salad for a crowd from either Sunset magazine or Better Homes and Gardens.  The secret at that time was marinating the cooked potatoes before doing anything else.  I believe the original recipe called for a homemade "French" dressing.  This was quickly replaced at our house by Wishbone Italian (when everything seemed to be cooked in Wishbone Italian dressing).  I later came up with my own dressing, replaced the French's mustard with Grey Poupon or some such thing and added more celery, green onions and something else I can't quite recall.  I love it, but I only know how to make it for twenty people.

The best commercial potato salad:  The Country Red Potato Salad at AJ's deli counter.

Best commercial macaroni salad used to be at Marie Calender's (it was actually very close to the kind we had at home)

Jack Webb was not a great actor (I think he's quite good in "Sunset Boilevard" though), but he was a very smart businessman.  I still can't picture him and Julie London being married, but I know they stayed frineds, and even after she married Bobby Troop, he hired them both for "Emergency."  Very admirable.
