Question:
I know I'm in the minority here, but what is the big deal about FORBIDDEN PLANET?
I know it's inspired by Shakespeare's THE TEMPEST, but I've always found it to be rather dull, talky and totally lacking in suspense.
What am I missing?

You are missing how spectacular that film was to a theatre go-er in 1956 - stand it up against Flash Gordon in B&W on a 11" TV screen.

No disrespect intended, but "Spectacle" does not make a good movie.
Story, Screenplay, Acting and Directing does.
For an 18-year old, the visual excitement was well worth the $0.50 admission.
Story, Screenplay, Acting and Directing were a dime-a-dozen on TV - but not spectacle.
I take it you don't like Fantasia or 2001.

FANTASIA is superb. With the exception of THE SORCERER'S APPRENTICE, it doesn't really try to tell a story. It is what it is.
I am not a big fan of 2001. It's good, but I don't think it's great. Too much "light show" for my taste.
I like a good story...well told...and 2001 hinders the telling of the story with too many special effects...particularly toward the end.
That's my main complaint with today's movies. The filmmakers are so much in love with cgi that their action sequences get boring. Just look at the chases in EAGLE EYE and WANTED, and you'll see what I mean.
But, that's just my opinion.
