TODAY IN THEATRE HISTORY...

Nothing terribly interesting happened but to perhaps tie in to the rather strange GUYS & DOLLS billboard pic that DR Jose posted last night...CRAIG'S WIFE opened on this date in 1947 at the Playhouse Theatre.

Of further interest, the interior and exterior of Playhouse Theatre are seen in the original THE PRODUCERS movie.  It was demollished in 1969.

Thursday morning greetings!  I'm going to the hospital soon - to tour their conference facilities with a grantwriter associate.  We're planning a conference to be held there in September and wanted to get the "lay of the land" before proceeding.

Your retirement didn't last long. ;)

LOL!  Staying involved in a couple of professional organizations is part of my transistion strategy.

Semi-random musing:

The new commercial for Chef Boyardee still makes me giggle, at the very least smile, each time I see it.

Did you know that each can of Chef Boyardee contains a full serving of vegetables;)

More semi-random musing:

I can't stand the woman who is eating at the Chinese(?) restaurant in the Geico commercial.  What the heck is she playing?  First she sits there smiling at the money-pack and then acts shocked when told it's the money she could have saved blah blah blah and then she is suddenly all smiles and says "I know..." like she's the cat that just swallowed the canary.  What the--?!?

DR Ginny, my brother-in-law retired. He had been looking forward to it for months and had plans to do absolutely nothing for the first few weeks. On his first day, the office called and insisted he come in, because they couldn't figure anything out at all without him.

DR Ben - Thanks for the theatre report.

I'm interested in seeing 33 Variations mainly because I was almost a part of one of the first readings of the show down in DC.  Arena Stage and Georgetown University had a one-week workshop about three years ago.  Arena Stage subsequently produced a full-fledged mainstage production a year later as part of their season.  -I believe it was also further workshopped at Sundance.  In any case...

Since the play does feature the music of Beethoven, "The Diabelli Variations" - which are the "33" of the title -  they needed a pianist for the workshop.  I was put on stand-by to play for the workshop due to a scheduling conflict with the originally contracted pianist.  It was an interesting script then, and I'm sure it's still an interesting script now.

Yes, in the midst of all that theatre reporting I forgot to mention that piano playing is a big part of the show. We don't hear all 33 variations but we hear many of them and some of Anton Diabelli's waltz, which is a major thrust of the whole play.

The pianist gets her own applause. That's nice.

...And between "Lost" and "Damages", it really is best just not to think too much about either show's twists and turns, otherwise, major headaches will ensue.  -Or something like that.

Very nice.

*And, frankly, I breathed a sigh a relief when I found out I did not have to play for the workshop.  That was a lot of notes to learn in less than a week. A whole lotta notes.  The pianist definitely deserves a bow.

He was probably classified as a contractor/consultant and got paid twice as much.    :-\

Re:  John McGiver.  Does anyone remember his short-lived series MANY HAPPY RETURNS?  It's one of my earliest TeeVee memories, I think mostly due to Mr. McGiver's very distinctive ideolect.

As for the Topic of the Day...

Here's one of my favorite cake recipes.  It's a bit "fussy", but worth the effort.

Dark Chocolate Brown Sugar Pound Cake with Chocolate Glaze
From the April 1998 issue of "Gourmet"

Yield: Makes 16 to 20 servings

2 1/4 cups cake flour
3/4 cup unsweetened Dutch-process cocoa
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
1 cup sour cream (8 1/2 ounces)
2 1/4 sticks (1 cup plus 2 tablespoons) unsalted butter, softened
1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
1 1/2 cups packed dark brown sugar
1 tablespoon chocolate extract (optional)
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
6 large eggs
3 ounces fine-quality bittersweet chocolate (not unsweetened)
2 tablespoons unsalted butter

Accompaniments:brown sugar sour cream
strawberries

Do not preheat oven. Butter and flour a 12-cup bundt pan, knocking out any excess flour.

Into a small bowl sift together flour, unsweetened cocoa powder, and salt. In another small bowl stir together baking soda and sour cream.

In a large bowl with an electric mixer (preferably a standing electric mixer) beat together butter and sugars until light and fluffy, about 10 minutes. Beat in extracts and add eggs 1 at a time, beating well after each addition. With mixer at low speed, add flour mixture and sour cream mixture alternately in batches, beating until just combined.

Pour batter into bundt pan and put in middle of cold oven. Set oven to 350°F and bake cake 1 hour and 25 minutes, or until a tester comes out clean. Cool cake in pan on a rack 15 minutes and turn out onto rack to cool completely. Pound cake keeps, wrapped in plastic wrap, at room temperature 1 week. Alternatively, pound cake may be frozen, wrapped well in plastic wrap and foil, 3 months.

Chop bittersweet chocolate and in a double boiler or a metal bowl set over a saucepan of barely simmering water melt chocolate with butter, stirring until smooth. Transfer glaze to a pastry bag fitted with a #3 plain tip (slightly smaller than 1/8 inch). (Alternatively, transfer glaze to a small heavy-duty sealable plastic bag and press out excess air. Snip off 1 corner, making a small hole.) Pipe glaze back and forth over top of cake, letting it drip down sides. Let glaze set 30 minutes at room temperature.

Serve cake with dollops of sour cream and strawberries.

**It's best to double the amount glaze. :)
