I did notice one very big hair ball, so maybe she got it out of her system

Boo has had two small meals and snoozed on my lap. Now she's up and about.  I think she's feeling better.

DR Cillaliz - Maybe Atlanta is handling the snow differently right now, but most of the flights tomorrow morning out of JFK and LaGuardia have already been cancelled.  I hope your friend, Pam, gets home sooner rather than later.

I just checked and her flight took off about 10 minutes late and is in flight.  Unless she got on standby on the earlier flight.  I felt a little bad leaving her at the airport when I had such an easy time getting to the same place she was going, but i did tell her about the flight I had and she chose to take a cheaper route.  So...

Being a big fan from way back of the British Carry On films I finally rented Carry On Laughing the television series that ran 13 episodes.

What a major disappointment. Totally unfunny and I wanted to laugh. The shows have canned laughter and applause which doesn't help.

Michael, my buddy Harlan Ellison sent me a boxed set of Carry On movies a while back...I, having remembered Carry On, Cleo fondly from my youth ("Infamy!  Infamy!  They've all got it infamy!).  They are the first dozen or so and I must say so far they have been a bit of a slog to get through...remarkably tedious and unfunny.  I'm puzzled why they are so beloved?

Double Entendres, big busted girls. low comedy, high comedy and slapstick. But above all a great group of actors who appeared in the films. Sid James, Charles Hawtrey, Peter Butterworth, Jim Dale, Joan Sims, Barbara Windsor, Hattie Jacques, Kenneth Connor. I am sure I am leaving some out but these are the names that come to mind.

Carry On Part 2

I was in a little town in Southern Portugal and the cinema was show That's Carry On! in English with Portuguese subtitles. I was the only one laughing in the cinema

For any DRs who use any sort of "peer-to-peer" file transfer services, you might want to watch this clip from tonight's NBC Nightly News:

Is  Bertram Smith's Acres of Books still in Long Beach?

In 1990 Acres of Books was designated a cultural heritage landmark by the City of Long Beach - but that didn't stop the city Redevelopment Agency buying it up for a "nicer" project. They closed their doors in October.

Beyond that, der Brucer just fell down and went boom while taking out the trash.

Nothing serious - he was pushing the trash can up the driveway, said trash can skidded, so did he, and he landed on one knee.  He was more startled than anything else.

Thank goodness it was nothing serious.  I hope he isn't hurting tomorrow.

Not to worry - I had lots of training in falling "gracefully". (It's all about directing momentum.)

I must say I'm finding Room At The Top a bit of a slog, although the acting is very good.  One interesting thing is Donald Wolfit, who is, as always, wonderful.  Mr. Wolfit was the role model for Sir in The Dresser - that film is based on its author's time serving as his valet.

My mother generally liked most everything she watched, but she absolutely detested ROOM AT THE TOP. I don't think I ever remember her condemning any other movie, but she certainly did that one.

I have a question for people with widescreen TVs.

When you watch a movie in Academy Format do you watch the movie with black/gray bars on the left and right side of the image or so you watch it "formatted to fit widescreen TVs"?

I prefer the "original aspect ratio," whatever that may be.  If it's Academy or full frame, I have the black or gray bars on the side.  If it's a non-anamorphic widescreen, I zoom in so that it fills my widescreen TV.  But if something is only available in pan-n-scan (like "The Visit" with Ingrid Bergman and Anthony Quinn, which was on not too long ago) and it's something that I want to watch, I'll put up with it.

Unfortunately, there are certain DVDs that were issued only in pan and scan or open matte transfers, and that's all we're likely to get.

Well, we sure did get snow, and more is predicted for later tonight. Schools have been canceled for tomorrow, so I doubt we'll be doing lunch. Ah well. It's beautiful if inconvenient.

I have had a super busy evening of viewing. I began by watching the next Hiroshi Shimizu film: THE MASSEURS AND A WOMAN. Part comedy, part mystery, part romantic triangle, and part drama, this hybrid-like film didn't really work for me though there are some individual moments that were good. This one had the best video quality of the four films in the set. Thankfully, it was the shortest.

And the last film in the box set ended up being the best one: ORNAMENTAL HAIRPIN. A bittersweet tale of much charm, I really enjoyed this one. A good one to wrap up this box set.

I can't believe I watched all four films in this collection in one day. This must be a new record for me.

Next, I finished THE BONE COLLECTOR. Yep, I did remember the guilty party correctly, but it was still a good tension-filled ending.

I watched NINE LIVES.  Very short - only an hour and fifteen minutes.  It's an independent film, based on a play, which in turn is based (without credit) on LA RONDE, set amidst the gay subculture of L.A.
Dennis Christopher gives a truly surprising performance.
The magic of THE FANTASTICKS is touched upon.
There is a lot of contemplation of the navel going on in the film.

And I concluded my evening watching the two hour BROTHERS & SISTERS episode. Very involving, and I loved quite a bit of it.

Today I start work on the four-film Criterion/Eclipse box TRAVELS WITH HIROSHI SHIMIZU. I have never seen any of these four films.

The first film (which I'll watch this afternoon) was made in 1933, but it's a silent movie: JAPANESE GIRLS AT THE HARBOR.

I will be most interested to hear your thoughts on these. I am always fascinated by Japanese films.

I liked it too.  A very intense two hours.  Each "act" seemed quite dramatic.  -Although, I thought the tag line they kept using in the promos was a little misleading.

The Portland weather has come and gone - about an inch of snow.

The snow storm is to the north and west of us, the rain storms to the east.

Well, it's past midnight here, so I think I'm going to put myself to bed. Those BATMAN films on Blu-ray should arrive tomorrow, but I won't be able to watch all four of THEM in one day. There are too many bonus features involved.
