AND ALL THAT JAZZ

Well, you've read the notes, the notes were jazzy and snazzy and pizazzy, and now it is time for you to post until the jazzy cows come home.

DR elmore - Hmm... Will and Audra?  Hmm... I think not.  However, there's someone else in that cast who is currently involved in a relationship of a somewhat clandestine and specious nature. :-X

bk - So, was the "Terry Trotter TRIO" just initially brought together for the "Passion in Jazz" recording? Or had he worked with them before?

And speaking of Jazz covers...

I remember hearing some selections from The Unsinkable Molly Brown played by Toots Thielemans.  They were played on some overnight jazz show, and I've been trying to track them down ever since.

DR Dan (the Man) - As for Nikki and Paolo and those spiders... I know the writers admitted that that episode was more or less a "throw away" episode, but I have been wondering if that set-up would somehow come back.  I almost thought that that would explain how Locke "died".

DRs Ginny and Dan (the Man) - Thankfully, "many different herrings" were not served at the reception.  Instead...

-Potato Pancakes served with Apple Sauce, Sour Cream and Capers
-Fried Tilsit Cheese served with a Cherry Tomato Compote
-Chicken Schnitzel Skewers
-Pulled Pork served with Horseradish Mayonnaise and Marble Rye Toast Points
-Assorted Crudité
-German Chocolate Cake Petit Fours
-Birthday Cake - It was also the birthday of the company's Founding/Artistic Director
-Merlot, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Beer, Soft Drinks

All in all, it was quite a nice spread.  Very festive.

DR Jennifer - The "original" Ricola's are the ones in the yellow wrapper.  They are also the only ones in their line that are more cubed shaped rather an oval lozenge.

DR DerBrucer - She had an accent, but it was far from delightful.

*And listening to her talk to the customer who was in line before more... An elderly woman was fretting about not having enough money to pay for a new battery.  The clerk kept telling her that the car needed the batter immediately(!), but she also said that if the woman needed to drive home to get more money, then she could have the repair tech drive her car around so that she could drive home to get the money. -But didn't the clerk just say that the car needed a new battery NOW?!?!?  And the clerk also kept telling her that she really should get a -3-year battery - even though the woman/customer kept telling her that she only drove her car six miles each day - back and forth to her sister's house.  "You could spend less money on an 18-month battery, but since you drive every day, you really should get the 3-year batter."  Thankfully, the woman's sister drove up at that time to take her to lunch.  -Otherwise, I was going to speak up... And I probably should have anyway.

After the opening night reception - which was held in the President's House of the College of Charleston - the gang headed to Patrick's for some karaoke.

Patrick's is truly the most pathetic and scary (in a good way) "special interest" establishment I have ever been in.  Interesting people behind the bar.  Interesting people in front of the bar.  Interesting decor: everything from "artistic" photos of scantily clad men to some local "winners" of various bar contests to puppies(!).

And the karaoke itself was also quite interesting and varied.  Who knew that a shirtless African-American gentleman liked George Strait?!?!?

There were a bunch of "other" people at the bar tonight too, and then I realized that they admit people ages 17(?-18)-20 - they stamp their hand - so, I guess it's a good place for some of the "straights" to hang out since the bars downtown don't admit anyone under 21.

A truly interesting experience.

Thanks, DR DAW.

They had approached me back in 2002 about possibly coming down for a full season.  However, then I got offered Sweeney Todd at the Kennedy Center, so...

I've known the Artistic Directors through SETCs and UPTAs.  Their resident musical director ended up not being able to finish out the season this year.  Mary Beth had asked just after the New Year if I might be interested and available.  A couple of weeks later, I was able to give her a definite answer.  And that was that.

I do have to admit I was a little hesitant to take the position due to the fact that the show had already been cast - they try to have their whole season cast at the beginning of the season. They had originally planned to do - and had cast! - Crazy For You, but then switched to The Producers, so some people had to be re-cast, re-"roled".  Thankfully, everything worked out. :)

TOD -

Currently re-reading Michael Tolliver Lives, by A. Maupin.

One aspect of the Tales of the City books that hadn't occurred to me, or maybe it's just this latest novel, is how often Maupin throws in commercial references, businesses where his characters shop or products they buy and use.  Interesting what one can pick up on a second reading.

I'm still in the hotel, so I still don't have access to a DVD player.

However, all that could change by next week.
