I did watch some things last night. I started with FOG OVER FRISCO, a 75-minute programmer Bette Davis made in 1934. She's top billed but gets killed halfway through the movie. Margaret Lindsay is really the star. And it turned out to be a sort of murder mystery, too, but the killer was really pretty obvious.

Having never seen this film, I can only say......shoot!

I guess it's a good thing that I didn't reveal the murderer's name then!

T.O.D.

CD - Nothing

DVD - Some home movies of a very young elmore!

Is that why you wouldn't stop bothering me at THE BEGGAR'S OPERA, you little stalker!

Well, after those stories Alex Pope told me!

LOL!

I just reviewed the Roger Daltrey BBC version of BEGGAR'S OPERA, which was really quite good IMHO.

Except they do hang him in the end, which is not the original play's intention.

Yes--I go into that in my review.  Personally I think Gay simply caved to pressure for a "happily ever after."  It doesn't really make much sense in the original version.

Not in the least!  Hanging Macheath distorts his deliberate parody of the popular Italian opera seria and ther silly happy endings of the time. Also, reprieving Macheath gives the "playwright" a chance to comment on his forced happy ending; Macheath and Polly appear in his sequel POLLY, which was not staged in Gay's lifetime.

PLAYER. All this we must do, to comply with the Taste of the Town.

BEGGAR. Through the whole Piece you may observe such a Similitude of Manners in high and low Life, that it is difficult to determine whether (in the fashionable Vices) the fine Gentlemen imitate the Gentlemen of the Road, or the Gentlemen of the Road, the fine Gentlemen.----Had the Play remain'd, as I at first intended, it would have carried a most excellent Moral. 'Twould have shown that the lower sort of People have their Vices in a degree as well as the Rich: And that they are punish'd for them.

My point exactly--though from the opposite end (so to speak).   ;)

Not if you believe Mr Gay was pressured into a happy ending.

I watched this week's episode of THE FASHION SHOW while I ate lunch. With only six designers left, everyone is pretty talented, and the fashion show itself was one of the most enjoyable because no one had a panfully bad design (to my eyes).

Once the bottom two were picked, I saw the points the judges were making about what was wrong with the designs, but to my eyes they were well constructed, interesting, and fun. I also agreed with who went home (even though this person was one of my favorites).

Then I watched my work DVD for the day: 2 or 3 THINGS I KNOW ABOUT HER. Like Godard's MADE IN U.S.A, he's not really interested in telling a narrative story, so the little bit of narrative that's there is very prosaic. It's more a malcontent's film: showing and talking about aspects of modern society (circa 1966) that he loathes.

Since it was my first time seeing it, it wasn't boring (since it's Godard, you can never be sure what he's going to do next), but I can't imagine ever wanting to watch it again.

I did have time to get through all of the bonus items in the supplementary section. This included a funny debate between Godard and a government official discussing how everyone was a prostitute in one way or another if he worked, not out of love of his work, but to earn money for living.

I skimmed through today's Y&R. Nope, nothing of interest until the end and previews, but it was certainly great to see what's coming and wonder how this is going to tie into the Adam/Rafe situation.

And I ended my afternoon with this week's BETTER OFF TED. A pretty funny episode with the principals having the share offices. Some good, droll gags.

This should open up my options tonight to watch TAKEN AT THE FLOOD and something else. Haven't decided if it'll be something I haven't watched yet (a Blu-ray) or something like '1776' which I do want to watch at some point this weekend.

I'm up.  Once again, I decided not to get out of bed when the loud noises began at seven (of course, seven is always the loudest - once an hour goes by, then the loudness dissipates a bit).  So, I'm up, have read through various and sundried e-mails and shall maybe do the long and/or shorter jog.

This might be a dumb suggestion, but have you ever tried ear plugs?  I used some at the concert i went to on Canada Day and they really help.

That's what I posted about the other day but there was NO reaction at all; I guess everyone was "listening" to me with their ear plugs on! I mean:
EAR PLUGS!! :D

DR Jennifer - Don't believe everything you see on TV.  *And if you read the fine print at the end of the show - which is similar to the fine print that appears at the end of "American Idol" - the producers can do anything they want when it comes to putting together the show for broadcast.

Do you know that 2 lawyers here in France have managed to prove that contestants in such "real" tv (dumb) shows are actually ACTORS and should be paid as such...

Some have taken the shows to court and have won BIG money!!

Disneyland Musical Marriage Proposal

Now, this is definitely Disney "streetmosphere", but, if the young couple IS a true couple, that means Disney is making more big bucks from that and i find this most ... disgusting and "cheap"!

Much to my surprise, Cops and Robbers showed up at nine-thirty this morning.  So, what was going to be a very easy breezy day, turned into a shipping a lot of CDs day.  I managed to singlehandedly (no helper today) get everything addressed (I wasn't expecting these until next Tuesday or Wednesday and hadn't even begun addressing), packaged, postaged, and off to the post office by one.  I got all the big dealer orders out, save for five overseas dealers - those packages are all done, but have to be taken to the window at the post office, which I'll do on Tuesday morning.
