And a happy 110th!!!

Forgive my ignorance.  Who is that?

Gertrude Lawrence.

I guess I have never seen that photo before.

Gertrude Lawrence! You know; the one who looked like Dame Andrews in "Star!".

DR TCB, I thought you were the standby in LADY IN THE DARK!

He was standby for Danny Kaye! ;)

he's currently charged with attempted murder, but is actually a nice guy.

 ;D ;D

Don't mind my saying so but that sentence sounds like some deadpan humour line from DR Laura!

 ;D

I thought it was a very amusing comment.

I am glad you enjoyed the kitten video. Perhaps I shall post more as they grow up.

I hope so Laura.  Keith also enjoyed it.  Was that the first time it happened or did you do a re-take with the camera?

I'm at home, just about to leave to go to the store, then to my parents' house.  I read the notes, but not any of the posts.  Last night's show went well, but we ended at 11:17...a little longer. ::) We had about 40 people in the audience.  Those who see the show are enjoying it.  That's nice. :D

Sorry to rush, but I just wanted to pop in and say HAVE A FUN AND SAFE FOURTH OF JULY!!

I had a very tear-filled afternoon. I watched the rest of '1776' and the show always affects me every time I see it whether it's on stage or this wonderful film version.

Even the two different productions I was IN myself, I had a hard time not crying every night on stage. Maybe one of these days I'll get to do the show again.

It's actually true. My dad didn't realize until today he was the one in trouble.  My dad thought it was the brother in law who sat looking very bored most of the evening.

The commentary is OK, but I spent some time this afternoon with the screen tests on the disc. Some interesting make-up and costumes that ended up being very different in the movie.

I'd love to have a documentary on the making of the show and film. There are a few of these actors still around who could participate, and the show is so unique that it's fully deserving of a real making of documentary.

In August 1969, I went into the 46th Street Theatre thinking, well, this will be interesting and when the show was over, I didn't want the show to end or to leave the theatre. I can still see William Daniels opening the show on that edge of the set that jutted out over the orchestra and yelling about Congress. It was absolutely brilliant. I had gone to New York to see PROMISES PROMISES with Jerry Ohrbach, which I saw the night before and loved, but 1776 blew that show out of the water.

Patricia Zipprodt's costume for Martha Jefferson was completely different in the film and a real improvement. Virginia Vestoff's onstage costume was a light lavender and I think she has more than one costume in the film.

I just got up from a nice nap and now I must get cleaned up and ready to head to Portland for a partay!

Frankly, I would rather go back and finish taking my nap.

Can Mt. Rushmore be seen in Canada?

I was so looking forward to seeing this production of CANDIDE since it's conducted by my friend, the great John deMain, who does PORGY & BESS better than anyone, and who is one great opera conductor. Also the cast looks good on paper, but it's not very good. You know you're in trouble when the choreographer decides to choreograph the greatest overture ever written for Broadway and you're stuck watching six dancers in silver body suits prance around aimlessly while the principal trumpet blows notes left and right. A lot of the secondary cast is Italian so a lot of the wonderful lyrics are next to unintelligible. The design, overall, is quite good, but the pace is slow. Then we get to the fantastic finale "Make Our Garden Grow" and the trumpeter blows the final chord! Oy.
