I was just (well, not JUST) given season one and two of Heroes on Blu-Ray.  Do you think I will like this show?  Good as Lost?

Was it the book UP THE DOWN STAIRCASE where I first saw SILAS MARNER referred to as SILLY ASS MARNER?

And since it has already been "hinted" at as a Topic of the Day -

Which "standard" work(s) of literature - or other "required reading" - did you find "not good" and/or not bother to read (a.k.a. You Clif Note'd it)?

Hmmmmmmmmmmmm......I liked just about everything we had to read for school.  But I do have to say that I don't like TOM SAWYER and HUCKLEBERRY FINN....irritating dialect and some really dumb adventures.

I'll start...

At the end of my junior year of high school, I found out that I was qualified to take AP Government during my senior year, so I went ahead and signed up for APGOV. We were given a list of about 20 books from which we had to pick five to read over the summer.  Well...

I actually did get a head start on checking out the books on the list, just to see what I thought would make for some "good summer reading".  Well, none of the books were "good summer reading".  And, of course, most of them were over 300 pages long.  -Who knew that so much could be written about the U.S. Government?  ::)  Well...

I believe I managed to get through 1/4 of one of the books, while the rest sat more or less unopened on my desk.  Needless to say, it came as quite the shock when we were suddenly handed pop-quizzes - well, more like pop-tests - about the books we were supposed to have read over the summer during the second week of class.  I somehow managed to scrape by - as did a number of my fellow AP Government classmates.

*Worst of all - unlike the AP English reading list (which I did like, and which I did read (more or less)) - we never referred nor used any of the texts from the AP Government summer reading list during the course of the course.  Yes, we covered the related topics, but our text book remained our only text for the class.

Well, well, well. . . last night I watched a motion picture on Blu-Ray entitled REPULSION.  I had not seen this film since seeing it at a repertory house in the 1980s. . .and I agree with everything BK said about it.

DR Jose said,
Quote
DR td - Congrats on being "officially" part of the reading!

. . .and I say "Thank you," and all the others who wished me well yesterday.  I'm happy to have served the playwright, who indeed did write the character "in" my voice.  I've been a part of this particular script since its inception, did other readings of it under different titles way back when, so it was like having unused muscles kick back in.  Father Peter is one of those roles which I hope to play onstage someday soon. . .

Good morning, all! I had a very restless night, and I had to take another Vicodin around 2:30. Then I slept too late this morning. I'm not feeling any signs of being over-active yesterday, so that's good, but I think I'll take it very easy today. My only plans are to continue reading through Russell Warner's new score to Kern's OH BOY!, looking for discrepancies in the piano part. I'm hoping my colleague Curtis will stop by to pick up the proofed scores for LIFE BEGINS. . .

SILAS MARNER was a good read, one of the few required texts I actually enjoyed reading. Outside of the title character, I cannot remember a single character's name or much of the plot.

Good morning!

It was raining when I finally made my way outside to get the paper (was up several times during the night with some pain but finally fell asleep and slept until almost 9 a.m. which almost NEVER happens). The rain wasn't cooling things off, however, so it remains a hot, muggy day in progress. It's supposed to rain off and on all day today, so mowing the grass was canceled.

I had the same reaction to SILAS MARNER, DR Elmore. I can't say that I went into it with much emthusiasm, but I came to love it by the time it was finished. Same with JANE EYRE. Both of these were required reading in sophomore English class in high school, and I loved them.

Now, MOBY DICK (from junior year) was the book I had a hard time finishing. We were given the unabridged edition to read, and it was just SO detailed and dull that I found an adbirdged copy and bought that instead which is what I read. I think this is the first time I have ever admitted that to anyone.

Another book from junior year that all my friends loved and I was very lukewarm toward was THE BRIDGE OF SAN LUIS RAY. Of course, they despised THE RED BADGE OF COURAGE, and I though that was a masterpiece. Funny what appeals to folks and what doesn't.

I guess I'll get back to work today on Kurosawa's KAGEMUSHA. It will take all afternoon just to watch the film (179 minutes), so I won't get to the bonuses until this evening.

So, Dixie Bell and I go out on her leash. She does her business and walks back up the driveway into the house. Suddenly, a light bulb (so to speak) goes off above her canine cranium - she realizes that she didn't go as far as usual, so she looks to the freezer for her leash and wants to go back outside. She runs to the car and so we take our morning run around the cemetery as usual. . .

I always had a difficult time with required reading: in college I hated KING LEAR when I was forced to read it, and now it's my favorite Shakespeare play; there are moments guaranteed to rip my heart from my body and reduce me to tears. Other required reading I disliked:
PARADISE LOST (just eat the damned apple!)
GREAT EXPECTATIONS (now I think it's a great novel)
MACBETH (I didn't realize in 10th grade that I would become a relative or I would have paid more attention)
MOBY DICK (give me the movie any day!)
