GANJA GOES GOURMET

Any slacker living over his parents' garage can make pot brownies. Gourmet chefs are taking the art of cooking with marijuana to a higher level.

In Denver, a new medical-marijuana shop called Ganja Gourmet serves cannabis-infused specialties such as pizza, hummus and lasagna. Across town in the Mile-High City, a Caribbean restaurant plans to offer classes on how to make multi-course meals with pot in every dish. And in Southern California, a low-budget TV show called "Cannabis Planet" has won fans with a cooking segment showing viewers how to use weed in teriyaki chicken, shrimp capellini and steak sandwiches

Ganja Gourmet's menu includes lasagna ("LaGanja"), "Panama Red Pizza" and an olive tapenade called "ganjanade," along with sweets such as cheesecake, muffins and brownies. Employees wear tie-dyed T-shirts that proclaim, "Our food is so great, you need a license to eat it!!!"

The food isn't cheap. A whole pizza sells for $89, and a dozen sweet treats called Almond Horns cost $120.

Marijuana chefs put leaves or buds in a food processor and grind the marijuana into green flour. Then they add the flour to oil or butter, cook it slowly for up to a couple of days while the THC binds to the fat, and strain out the green flakes.

The result is "cannabutter," or butter that makes a diner high. Chefs say 2 teaspoons of cannabutter typically contain the amount of THC in an ounce of weed.

The pot-infused oils and butters have a greenish tint and an earthy taste, but chefs say the flavor can easily be masked with garlic or other herbs and spices.

Um, it would only be a copy-cat murder if it happened in Delaware.

Seriously... Why?!?!?!?

We are back from Macy's. T'was a disappointment. The windows are nothing special and the "Toy Department" is laughable. It's even less than it was two years ago, the last time we went. It is a very small part of the 8th Floor next to Santa Land and literally half of the display is candy!!! The rest is a mix of high end F.A.O. Schwartz type toys and crapola that you could get anywhere. The actors standing outside Santa Land are also a real mix of high quality and bored 20 somethings who need a job. We passed Mrs. Santa who looked wonderful and was very gracious and sweet and not 10 feet away was the most bored "elf" I ever saw. He was about as tall as Will Ferrel (sp) in the movie Elf but with none of the sweetness and excitement of the character. He looked like he would rather be anywhere else but on Macy's 8th Floor directing traffic at Santa Land. Oh, well. Another memory tarnished.

We then walked over to Lord & Taylor's who still have wonderful, wonderful windows. They are beautifully done and even though I'm sure the figures are used year after year they still look gorgeous. There are not as many windows this year. They took the last two and used them for regular displays but it was worth the walk in the cold to see them.

We then took the subway home, had lunch and then went back out to

Tea and Sympathy

to get our English treats for Christmas. We bought Christmas Crackers for Christmas day dinner with Anthony's relatives. We also bought a Christmas pudding and hard sauce for after Christmas Eve dinner and I bought a box of English candies for Anthony's mum (see how English I've become).

Now we are home for the rest of the day and evening. I'm on the laptop in the living room and Anthony is on the desktop in the bedroom (working on something creative) and we both have mugs of hot chocolate with mini marshmallows and crushed candy canes. I have to go downstairs and check the mail soon.

That's all from Chelsea.

DR Ben - If you feel like braving the crowds and the cold, the windows this year up at Bergdorf's and Saks are quite festive this year.

We might do that. We have unlimited Metro cards good until Sunday so we should take advantage of them. We don't usually get them since I walk to work and Anthony doesn't go uptown unless he has an audition. We buy them when we do the bag packing since we are at Equity every day for almost two weeks.

I also like the gingerbread display in the lobby of the Parker Meridien.  They're not stellar examples of the craft, but they're fun and for a good cause, City Harvest.

And I think they just updated the story - or I may have missed the "detail" earlier - they found another body in the alley behind the building.

I paid a call on Miss Jeanette today.  She had called earlier and inquired of my mom whether (1) I had arrived; (2) did I like pecan pie; and (3) did I like chicken and dumplings.

Lordy, lordy, lordy!  Yes, yes, yes.

I visited her shortly afterward and delivered her annual 3-lb box of See's candy.  Miss Jane (who is physically 64 years old, but mentally 12) was still abed (around 11:30 a.m.).  Miss Jeanette, who is roughly 87 years old, was polishing her kitchen countertops (butcher block style).  Her yappy little dog, Cooper, was all over me.  We had a nice chat, exchanged greetings, and I returned home with pecan pie and a jar of chicken and dumplings.

For lunch:  more fried chicken, field peas, fried squash, more corn-tomato casserole and cornbread.

My mom's supposedly resting today, but she's spent all morning in the kitchen...refusing my offers of cooking whatever she has in mind for lunch, etc.  Tonight, we'll heat up the chicken and dumplings.

I've finally finished decorating the Christmas tree.  It's just the right festive touch to brighten our holidays, I reckon.

On the potentially bad news front:  I have a very scratchy throat.  It started when I took a calcium table this a.m.   It seemed to have gone down sideways.  I thought it stuck in my throat for a few seconds as I guzzled water to get it down.  Don't know if that's why my throat is now very tender or whether the tablet just irritated an already "infected" site.

do you have some black licorice, such as Panda brand?  the real stuff can be soothing.

i'm truly enjoying your home & food stories. :)

Ah, black licorice can be soothing.  Alas, a few years ago, I found out that I'm one of the not-so-rare individuals who's blood pressure is affected by the ingestion of licorice.  -And I really used to - and still do - love the real stuff - even the salty kinds.  All about moderation.

Last night I watched 8 episodes of SEA HUNT.  In five of them  produced in 1958, the female lead character was played by Jan Harrison - even though she played a different character in each show, her hair and makeup was essentially the same.

In one episode she played the wife of a millionaire - played by a curly headed and thin youth named Larry Hagman who looked very nice with lots of curly hair and a swimsuit on the order of underwear briefs.  The three episodes produced in 1959 all featured a different lady in a different role - none of whom were an improvement on Jan Harrison.

I would recommend all Larry Hagman fans find this episode - he was even more attractive here than he was in his Tony Nelson days.

i must differ about hagman, what was the deal with his hair?  did he wear a toupee later or have a better hairstyle?  i think he was cuter in thr I DREAM.... series.

in the episode we watched last night jan harrison was a brunette & wore a different style bathing suit ;)

Of course DR MBARNUM I would enjoy seeing more SEA HUNT episodes whether they feature Jan or not.

Leo Lerman reported that Noel Coward said of Mary Martin:  The only two grown up things about her are her ego and her son.

DR JANE - I think he wore a toupee later - although I am not certain he was wearing it during the JEANNE days.  Since he was playing an Air Force officer, he probably had to wear his hair shorter, although probably not regulation.

I thought the long curly hair was most flattering, but then not having any hair myself, it may be just an aberration.

Watched one of the most enjoyable MENTALIST episodes from season one: the one in which Patrick takes $100 to a casino and by the end of the episode, has won about half a million dollars or so. Buys gifts for the team and then gives a bunch to charity and to one particular lady in need.

When I got in from lunch, I watched another Warner Archive DVD: I LOVE MELVIN. It is NOT one of their stellar releases. The print it's taken from isn't in the best of shape, and there are interlaced artifacts throughout. What a shame. I didn't take the time to take my laserdisc off the shelf, but I'm guessing it's actually better quality. If I get some time tonight, I'll see if it was. The Technicolor should have looked much better, and sharpness wasn't anything great either.
