Thanks TCB.  I feared it would put us into windscreen.

It did, but it was worth it.

Are you joking?  My screen is fine.

No, mine went to widescreen.

Do I need to delete the photo?

DAILY FINANCE

Quote
Anger Mounts as Sea Lions Are Killed for Eating Endangered Fish

At Bonneville Dam along the scenic Columbia River that divides Oregon and Washington states, a battle is raging between two species of mammals at very different levels of the food chain. At the top, of course, are humans, who say they are trying to prevent depleted populations of endangered Chinook salmon and Steelhead trout from coming any closer to extinction. Lower down, are hungry California sea lions, who've discovered that the dam -- located about 37 miles east of Portland -- is an excellent place to feast on the fish during their annual run.

Not so surprisingly, the sea lions are losing. Year-to-date, six of the portly pinnipeds have been euthanized by state wildlife officials under a special federal program that basically allows them to be killed if they are caught eating endangered fish. But as the sea lion death toll mounts, so too does the anger over their deaths.

Leading the protests has been the Humane Society of the United States. The animal welfare organization takes issue with the fact that area fisherman are allowed to catch and keep up to 16% of run -- expected to be a record 470,000 fish -- while sea lions are estimated to be munching on 4% of the run, says Sharon Young, marine issues field director for the organization.

"This is about the integrity of the [fisheries] management program," says Young. "You can't sensibly say that a 4% take by sea lions is unsustainable and yet at the same time allocate up to 16% for fisherman. It makes no difference to the fish who eats them."

Before a sea lion is killed, several criteria must be met, according to the program, which is administered by the Oregon wildlife officials, their counterparts in Washington state and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Among the requirements, the sea lion must be individually identified, must be observed in the Bonneville Dam area on at least five days, must be seen taking one salmon and must have been present during one hazing operation.

In other words, officials are looking for "chronic offenders." Swart says the sea lions are "humanely euthanized" by a veterinarian.

The situation at Bonneville Dam could get even more complicated soon, says Young. Stellar sea lions are showing up in greater numbers to feed on the fish, she says. Because Stellars are protected by the Endangered Species Act, they cannot be killed.
...

"...euthanized by state wildlife officials ..."

Not to be confused with "slaughtered" or "executed". ( I guess by grandson "euthanizes" the deer we eat.)

"...It makes no difference to the fish who eats them."

And I suspect it makes no difference to the Sea Lions how they are dispatched.

And what Legal group allowed Fish to have more rights than sea lions?

Ah, what tangled webs we weave when first we practice to deceive - Mother Nature.

der Brucer

Just how difficult would it be to control Sea Lion entrance to the river to begin with?

I'm wondering why I haven't read about this in my local news. :(

I am between services right now on a very stressful morning.

I awoke this morning to discover Betsy had left the garage door open and the garage light on, evidently from when her parents left last night.  I soon realized our cars had been broken into.  My cell phone, a work name badge and perhaps a garage door opener to the new house are all missing.   My car was in total disarray, which was the most disheartening thing.

Then I began on the DVR shows I had saved up. I began with FLASH FORWARD. SOme really unpleasant killingers during the show's first half hour, and then some manipulative drama near the end that really made me lose patience with the show. I may be dropping this since there was NO good reason for the decisions made at the end of the hour except to cause angst and more melodrama. It's insulting to the intelligence to see them put this kind of stuff in the show just to get to a pre-determined end point.

I haven't watched the last two episodes.  Hopefully, I'll be able to get to them later tonight.

Der Brucer, in Sioux City they are now planning to go to the houses of the people who didn't register their pit bulls, take them and kill them.  It makes me sick

And who, pray tell, determines what is, or is not, a "pit bull"?  Are they doing DNA testing?

Pits are getting a bad rap becasue they are associated with a large percentage of bite fatalities: if and whn a pit decides to attack, it is more proficient than other breeds. Cockers, Collies, Chows, and Cghhuahuas are much more likely to bite.

Every Pit I've ever handled has been a snuggle-bug.

Nah - it's not all that wide screen (maybe we could get BK to ban you from the board for bad behavior ;D) - or one of us could resize it for you.

I know I'll be watching DUPLICITY which I've wanted to see for months. I'm not if I want to watch a second movie on top of it. I guess how I respond to it will determine if I want to watch another.

I also think I'll go ahead and get cracking tomorrow on those two Criterion Blu-rays of movies I've already reviewed on DVD: VIVRE SA VIE and SUMMER HOURS.

I'm expecting Fox's COCOON and THE THOMAS CROWN AFFAIR (1999 version) this week in the review pile, so I will likely get one or both of the Criterions taken care of while waiting for them to arrive. Since they're both vault titles and not releases of new movies, I'm wondering if Fox won't have just gone ahead and send them already and they'll be here tomorrow. That would make me SO happy.

There is at least one person who is requiring DNA testing. The dumbest thing is they are looking at a repeal of the pitbull ban, but are telling the police to go ahead with enforcement while they debate it.  It makes me want to puke

If they are doing DNA testing then they must be including the Pit mixes.  With all the proven rehabilitation of the "Vic" dogs by rescue groups this is doubly shocking. >:( :(

I celebrated by going to the office and balancing my trust account. I did have church services on TV while I did it.  I also broke down and got some larger sized jeans.  I'm back in my old size again, which I'm not happy about, but man they are so much more comfortable

I'm sorry.  Spring is here it should be easier to get back on track before you need to buy more clothes.

Just ordered LSOH - the soundtrack.

I have the LP from a few decades ago, wherein Fred Katz admitted that he sold Corman the same score again for another picture, and Corman didn't seem to notice.

NOW I get a *ding* when I get an email - which didn't happen at Comcast.net....but it's a POP mail so my COMCAST mail with my COMCAST address is sent and received there!  Hurray!

Easter Sunday afternoon greetings!  4 very tired people are back from Lima and waiting for the Easter bunny to fill their baskets tonight.  We told him ahead of time not to visit our house until this evening.

Fr. Richard's first Easter service was made even more special because it included a dedication ceremony for baby Catherine, who was born just before Christmas.  Her parents come from a tradition that doesn't believe in infant baptism, but they wanted some sort of church recognition of her arrival.  It was very sweet and the ladies of the church provided a lovely cake decorated with lots of pink icing.

Four films down - and four to go.

Not bad - three of them I hadn't seen.  An intermission program on each disk with lots of the drive-in intermission shorts and a couple of previews (but not of the films on the disk) - so it's a jam-packed bargain.
