Good Morning! Good Afternoon!

I'm up, I'm up... And I believe everything is finally starting to fall back into place and in order.

I received a WB Archives package....the Torchy Blaine collection, the Mike Henry/Jock Mahoney Tarzans and the DVD-R of Musical Shorts from the late thirties-early forties.

I've watched the first two Torchy Blaine's...and they're ginger peachy.

That is interesting that DR JohnG wrote that he believes american audiences would not buy THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO if it was dubbed in English.

So they will be happier to have a Swedish movie with English subtitlees?

I haven't seen many dubbed movies. But both of these films were dubbed in French here. And i liked it that way fine. Better I think than if i was watching it in Swedish with subtitles.

Keith prefers dubbing, when done well I also enjoy it.  Too often the voices just don't work well.  We prefer to watch movies with subtitles at home so we can replay what we missed.

I much prefer subtitles

If you had asked me before watching the MILLENIUM movies dubbed in french i probably would have said the same thing. But you could hardly notice that they were dubbed.

And i did watch the dvd in swedish with french subtitles for a few minutes and found it much harder to follow. Swedish is extremely foreign sounding to me. And i don't understand any of it. Now maybe Swedish with English subtitles would have been easier for me. But i really loved watching the movie dubbed. And i wonder why the dvd in the US would not have English dubbing as an option.

Here the dvd is either french with french subtitles or Swedish with french subtitles.

Good dubbing makes a BIG difference!  :)

DR FJL, did I miss something? Were you laid off? If so, I apologize for such late sympathy.

I thought you were talking about getting insurance, not unemployment.  I too hope I haven't missed something.

TOD:

I finally began to watch my season 1 set of THE BARBARA STANWYCK SHOW and am totally addicted, so I will more then likely watch the remaining episodes (each are only 1/2 hour long) this weekend. It is an anthology show and each story has been quite interesting. And for course I love Babs.

Did any other HHWers get this set?

Season 2 is coming out soon.

No and I don't remember the show.  I'm a big fan of her too.

The subtitle would read "I have a lot of work, but I don't want to work today"

Translated 25 times and we get:

I've had a very busy morning, but am now done with all my stuff for today.  I've written a first pass for the liner notes, and will revise and add to over the next few days.

Good Afternoon!

Still in the process of getting things in order. -Which also happened to include putting in the window A/C unit in the living room.  But, all in all, it's been a pretty productive Friday afternoon.

Although I do prefer sub-titles, there are a couple of exceptions....both CURSE OF THE DOLL PEOPLE (1958) and KING KONG ESCAPES (1968) are great fun in their dubbed versions.

Yes, I think audiences are happier with the subtitles.

I remember being stuck in Costa Rica while the airport in Miami was closed because of a hurricane and I couldn't get home. So, I went to the movies and saw "Jefferson in Paris." The French portion was subtitled only in Spanish and I had to work hard with both to figure out what they were saying.

I'm quite logey right now.  I had a sandwich and fries for lunch.  I'm eating very lightly at the Gardenia - one appetizer (prosciutto and melon) and a dinner salad.

Oh, and the very late mail showed up - and clearly it is marked on the envelope that it was sent on May 27th.  What kind of universe do we live in where it would take that it would take eight days for a bloody envelope to go from Virginia to California.

I've put away my laundry, finished editing the Opening of Act Two, written about The Lady of the Slipper, and now I'm thinking about resting in front of the tv.

I'm glad they caught that Dutch creep, who appears to be a budding serial killer. I don't think his wealthy family can get him out of the current mess, and that's probably all the best for humanity, if not for the Holloway family.

As to dubbed films, I have no problems with singers being dubbed, but I want to hear the actor speak his/her own lines and not listen to another actor dub them for him. I do wish that on earlier foreign films we'd get new unexpurgated translations. Both THE BAKER'S WIFE and CARNIVAL IN FLANDERS suffer from 1930s American puritanism.
