Amazing that we're in the same apartment and both on line doing different things.

Welcome to my world...

And mine...

I went to the Carnegie during my first working trip to NY. It was my first meal after I arrived, and although the sandwiches were absurdly huge, it still struck me as very expensive. It was across the street form the hotel where I was living (The Wellington) and very convenient but I never went there again.

I just realized how tired I am after a day out in the fresh air.  Another long day tomorrow, with an early wake up call, so - 'night!

Apart from Cantor's in LA, my favorite delis are in NY: Barney Greengrass, where we've meet up with Elmore and Jose a few times, and Eisenberg's, home of the best egg cream in NY!

Finished watching the Mexican film EL GATO CON BOTAS (PUSS N BOOTS) and am now trying to decide if I want to do a load of laundry.

Tomorrow I am going to Charleston to show JEWS AND BASEBALL at a fundraiser. It will be in a historic theatre, the Sottile. I like it when we get to show our film in a historic venue; it seems to add something since the story itself is about history.

I have to say I'm not a fan of the Carnegie Deli. As has been said, the sandwiches are stupidly huge (OK I said that), they are stupidly expensive and I also find the service appalling! The waiters are rude and mean and not in a cute way. They are cranky, unpleasant people who shouldn't be waiting on the public. The either don't like their jobs and they take it out on the customers or they are so obnoxious that they couldn't get jobs anywhere else. Can you tell I have had bad waiters over the years? I've been to the Carnegie more than once (though I haven't been in years because of the lousy service) and each time the waiters were as unpleasant as many New York City bank tellers are rumored to be.

End of rant on the Carnegie Deli

Was it animated?

DR Edisaurus, it was a live action film...here is the trailer for the US dubbed version:

Some may find it quite bizarre.

I think I've lucked into a place to stay in NY. I had reservations at The Distrikt, which looked very nice and is certified bedbug free. It was cheaper than the Wellington or the Edison, but still $2300 for 2 rooms for 3 nights!

But it looks like we may be able to stay at my friend John's apartment, since he's been in Woodstock for months editing the new Bruce Beresford film. (He's the editor who has done the last 4 Merchant Ivory films.)
He has an apartment in the gigantic London Terrace in Chelsea. Oh dear...it's near Madeline's Patisserie with the amazing macarons. I ma have to introduce my mom and Naz, her better half, to these babies!

I think the Carnegie Deli is a tourist trap. The real Jewish deli in New York was the 2nd Avenue Deli amd that is sadly no longer in business.

Good Evening!

Today was quite a long, wonderful, inspiring, and, at times, quite emotional day for me.  Oh, and there was lots of food too. ;)

As for the Topic of the Day...

I remember planning a "Do all the typical NYC tourist things" trip a couple of years ago.  The first restaurant on my list was The Carnegie Deli.  Yes, I went into sticker shock when I browsed the menu, but since the sandwich was so big, I ended up with breakfast and a snack for the next day.  I think I lucked out with my waitress too.  Great service and she even told me not to order the pastrami that day, so I opted for the corned beef.

I also went there last year for lunch with a "regular" - who happened to be picking up the tab - and, again, we had great service.  Otherwise...

Katz's in NYC's Lower East Side is my favorite NY Deli.  The Pastrami-Corned Beef Combo can't be beat.  I've also tried "Montreal Smoked Meat" at Mile End in Brooklyn.  It's pretty good, although, not that consistent.

I also loved the original incarnation of the New York Deli in Richmond, VA.  They flew their bagels and bialys in from H&H, and their house-cured corned beef in an omelet was a great way to start a Saturday.

A friend of mine (ex Turner producer) is big into contra dancing. (Sounds a big political...)

Every year they have a big gathering, and he does some sort of parody song to invite everyone to register. I thought some of you might like this. I think I enjoyed it more than the current show running on Broadway. Besides writing the lyrics and playing the instruments, Brian is also singing. Enjoy!

It's still in business.  It just moved to 3rd Avenue and 33rd Street.  Be sure to try the gribenes!

2nd Ave Deli

*And they're due to open a second location on the Upper East Side soon too.  On 1st Ave. ;)

We don't have any "real" delis in Salem, just places that call themselves delis but are really just sandwich shops whose main income comes from lottery gambling machines.

So...I would guess that the best deli I have been to is the one in NYC where I had the Beef Tongue (was it barbecued? I forget). It was good, whatever it was.

DR MBarnum - Since you were sitting next to me at the time...  The deli was Artie's Deli.  And you have the Tongue with Sweet and Sour Sauce.
