As for Baby, It's You - or as a lot of people I know have been calling it, Baby, It's Poo - well...

Maybe this has something to do with it...

In other news...

As I referenced in my first post, I attended a performance of Richard Wagner's Die Walküre last night at The Metropolitan Opera. This is the second installment of Robert Lepage's new "Ring" Cycle for The Met. Das Rheingold premiered last fall, and the final two operas, Siegfried and Götterdämmerung, will appear next season. -With complete cycles being presented next spring.

The multi-ton "Machine" worked last night - at least mechanically speaking. There were some wonderful effects, but there were also some truly strange moments - included some projected avalanches which just seem to happen for no particular reason. And, as I felt during Das Rheingold, I felt that the machine should have been used more, or, at the very least, been more active during some of the more static scenes. Maybe Lepage is making sure that the focus remains on the singers, the voices.  And as for the voices, well...

It's quite well cast vocally. Alas, it's not ideally cast vocally. There's only one true Wagnerian voice in the cast - as soon as Hans-Peter König opened his mouth as Hunding - WOW! There is a true heft and gravitas to his voice. The rest of the cast does sing quite beautifully at times - sometimes too beautifully -  and even though Deborah Voigt's "Brünnhilde" may have been a bit small-voiced - especially compared to everyone else on stage - I thought she rose to the challenge of her first Brünnhilde quite nicely.

And it was nice to see Maestro James Levine back on the podium. He was in fine form last night as were his players in The Met orchestra.

Elmore, the movie of "The Human Comedy" was more maudlin than the book. And I can certainly understand what you have to say about the band for the musical version. It took me a few listens to get past that and hear how good the music is. I think the whole piece needs to be reorchestrated. It was not a period sound and it seemed to rub that aspect into your face (or ears).

And in other other news...

Arena Stage's production of Oklahoma! won the Helen Hayes Award for Best Resident Musical last night. -Well, it actually share that honor with the Shakespeare Theatre's production of Candide. Oklahoma! also picked up HHAs for Outstanding Leading Actor, Musical Direction(!) and Choreography!

Hmmm.. I wonderf if this coming remount could be considered in the revival category next year? ;)

Next semester starts in May. I will have two classes, one on the Jazz Age (Stein, Hemingway, Hughes, Hurston and a section on the blues). The other is on the cultural theory of cookbooks. I'm setting up that class myself, with the point being that I finish this cookbook of my mother's. I've been working on it for two years, but having a deadline could help me finish it and shape it.

DR JohnG and elmore - I worked on a production of The Human Comedy a couple of years ago. It took a while for me to truly get it, but once I did, well... "Long Past Sunset" still makes me tear up. -And that whole final sequence... I don't think I've seen a cast cry more on stage during a closing night performance. -And we were crying in the pit too.

-And our pit consisted of: Piano, Keyboard/Synth, Violin (Fiddle), Guitar, Bass, and Percussion/Set. It worked quite nicely.

DR John G - when I get home, I'll send you a copy of an essay that was written for a grant project I directed several years ago.  The essay is titled "All Bound Together" and it's about how cookbook projects (church, clubs, etc) create community.

Well, I don't think the Helen Hayes Organization has a "Revival" category, but...

OH!

I get it!

Thanks! :)

"All Bound Together" was written by Anne L. Bower, the editor of Recipes for Reading: Community Cookbooks, Stories, Histories.  She used to teach at Ohio State-Mansfield and was keynote for the 1994 Butler County Women's Summit.
