I have never read a Harry Potter book.  I have never seen a Harry Potter movie.  I have nothing against Harry Potter, the genre just isn't my cup of tea

When my friend, Stan, offered to lend me the first HARRY POTTER book, I thought he was crazy.  But I took it home, and one day when I was out of books to read, I picked it up, and I instantly fell in love with the characters and the story.

I had the very same reaction; all the clerks at Barnes & Noble wondered why the first book was selling so well so we all determined to by a first edition, as well as all the subsequent ones so we could each sell a complete first edition set. A lot of those early books are probably beaten to hell by children now, and my complete set is very pristine. Once I bought it, I had to read it and soonevery clerk at B&N was addicted; it was like reading OLIVER TWIST rewritten by the author of THE WIZARD OF OZ

DS Craig is on his way home.  I'm pleased he didn't have any of the bad weather we had.  I don't know why I put on summer clothes this morning when it was only 63 degrees.  I think/hoped it will be warmer when we take Sherlock for a walk.

Is Craig coming back early?  Or have I lost track of time?

What year is this?

They aren't talking ;)

My dear friend who drove me to my appointment is one of the nicest people you could ever hope to know.  If she has a flaw, it is that she tends to blurt out what she thinks, even when she should probably not say anything.

I have been living with this horrible fear of what might be wrong with me, but until I have told that the problem is not my back, I refuse to think about the other possibility.  My friend had not seen me in the last four weeks, so she hadn't seen how badly my condition had become.  With in the first three minutes of seeing me, she said, "Oh my God, it looks to me like you have ____.  I ignored the first comment, but once we got into her car and were driving to the appointment, she said it twice more.

I overreacted.  I told her quite loudly that the thought had crossed my mind, and others had mentioned it too; but until I heard differently from the doctor, I didn't want that word said outloud.  I am very lucky that she didn't just dump me out into the street and leave me there.  I have since apologized.

TCB, I find that people who care about you also have anxieties about your condition. Unfortunately, they often pass these onto the patient, which ISN'T helpful. I knew someone with cancer who would accept cards and emails, but avoided other contact, because she felt she needed to stay positive. I can truly understand this. Maybe it would help to think of a nice way to say how you feel about it and have that ready in case it happens again. And repeat it as many times as needed. Make it clear that further discussion is off-limits.

Glenn and I had dinner at a restaurant at Albert Dock.   It took forever to be served and the food was just passable.  Glenn ordered garlic bread.  I don't particularly like garlic and at first turned down his offer to try some.  He told me there was very little garlic, so I tried some-it was very good bread but hardly any garlic at all.

So then it was time for the concert at the Liverpool Philharmonic Hall.  It was conducted byJohn Wilson, who's considered a young genius here (I think he's about 38 yrs old).  Maybe some of the HHWs have head of him?  He also conducts the "Proms" sometimes.

The show was a tribute to Lerner and Loewe and starred Anthony Andrews of Brideshead Revisited fame (and he played the prime minister in The King's Speech); Annalene Beechey, who starred in a touring production of My Fair Lady with Mr Andrews; Kim Criswell and our own Mr. Barrett.

Mr. Barrett!  You must have been shocked!

Yes, what a lucky coincidence!  I had actually gone to see Annalene Beechey.

Jane, Martin Clunes' character in DIRTY TRICKS isn't exactly a good guy. He's a rogue, although a rather charming one, IMO. The show also contains explicit sex, which some Amazon reviewers objected to.

Regarding 1776--I've never seen the show, but my friend and I went to see the movie when it came out.  It was the only time I've ever left a movie before it was over!   I'm thinking I should give it another chance 35 years later.

TCB, I'm sure she understands.  You're going through a very stressful time and she knows that. I hope you hear soon what the problem is and I hope the news is the best it could possibly be

I agree your friend  understands and DITTO on the second part.

Good luck finding your previous MRI!!!  How long ago was it?

Thank you to DRs Jane and TCB for the congrats for Rob.  He's quite pleased about the test, but sad that he just had to see Mary Linda off to Michigan.

He just arrived and on time.  It was only a two night hiking trip.  He is sore from the back pack & strenuous hike yesterday and has blisters from his new shoes.  He had a great time.

Well, I went to see The Wizard of Oz at the London Palladium today.  I really enjoyed it.  Of course, the movie is such a big part of my childhood (as it is with lots of people, of course) that maybe that has something to do with it.

Michael Crawford was fine as the Wizard, but as in the movie, he has a small role.  As a matter of fact, he was not the final actor to take a bow--the actress playing Dorothy, Danielle Hope was given that honor, understandably.

I hardly recognized Michael Crawford.  Before the show I was standing across the street and saw a poster from the show.   I thought to myself:  "Is Rip Taylor in this production?"

Just about all the songs from the movie were included.  The only one I can think of that was missing was "If I Were King of the Forest."   There were a few new songs---the only memorable one was sung by Glinda, the Good Witch --it had to do with the theme "there's no place like home."

I have to say it took getting used to the different voices of the characters.  I didn't care too much for the actress playing The Wicked Witch.    Hannah Waddingham (I know I've heard of her before -just can't think of what I've seen her in) was out so the understudy went on.

The sets are pretty amazing, especially the Wizard's "place."  The dog playing Toto was adorable and even barked at Miss Gulch when required.  Most of the time, though, he was on a leash.  It looked a little silly when Glinda was leading him along while the Munchkins and Dorothy were singing.

There were a few gay references which seemed to go over the heads of most audience members (of course it was made up of about 50% children).  At one point, the Cowardly Lion tells the Tinman he's acting like a sissy, who says something like "takes one to know one."  The Lion's response:  "I am what I am."  And the following line had about 3 people laughing:  The group is meeting the Wizard of Oz.  The Wizard asks, "Who's Dorothy?"  Dorothy says "I'm Dorothy."  The Lion walks up to her, takes her hand and says " And I'm proud to say I'm a friend of Dorothy."     I'm wondering if those who buy the t-shirt that says "Friend of Dorothy" have an idea of its meaning!

Speaking of the aforementioned audience members, I was prepared for talkative children, but the little girl in my row  was talking constantly for awhile.  At intermission (interval in Britspeak) I glanced over and saw she was about 7 years old (I had been thinking she was about 4).  And it was funny when one child yelled out "It's the Munchkins!"

I know a topic recently discussed here was when the audience claps in rhythm during the bows.  That's bad enough--some woman across from me started doing that during the song "We're off to see the Wizard," and lots of people followed here lead.  It was very annoying!

Well, that's the end of my London stay.

Tomorrow I'm flying to Newcastle.

I have told this story here before, but here I go again.  A friend of mine was playing The Scarecrow in  a community production of WIZARD OF OZ.  When our friends reached the scary forest and said, "Lions." "And Tigers", "And Bears;" the entire audience as one said, "Oh My!"

As soon as we realized that we used our "outside" voices, we all laughed.
