CHICKEN AND WAFFLES

Well, you've read the notes, the notes had both chicken AND waffles, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently eating some chicken and waffles, which they are finding MOOvelous.

I'm looking forward to seeing Terrence Malick's Tree of Life. I loved The Thin Red Line, didn't like The New World, thought Badlands OK and Days of Heaven bored me. So my reaction to his films is very variable.

I received the Blu-ray of Citizen Kane today, in a nice big box with extra goodies. It's a film which I admire rather than unreservedly enjoy but as one of the all-time classics I feel it has to be in my collection.

TOD
Fried Chicken: I've had good and bad and the near great. Never though KFC and Church's chicken were good. Never bad. Currently I enjoy Publix (Local food chain) own Fried Chicken.

Waffles: Never go out of my way to get these. I may have had them three time in the past decade or so.

Hot Dogs: I rather think Costco has great Hot Dogs. There is a small hot dog place that serves Chicago Style. But I don't want to travel 25 miles to eat one.

Good morning, all!  Another night of peculiar dreams involving a Barns & Noble-like book store and then teaching the staff how to pour wine at a posh restaurant, I vaguely recall traveling as well.

DR Ben, I appreciated your posting the Amazon.com info several days ago. When I get to their Kindle page I go into a coma. I believe that I have successfully registered the damned thing, but I have no idea how to proceed. I really think I'd just as soon open a book than deal with all of this unnecessary madness.

No word at all from JoAnn yesterday, so that's got me a bit concerned.

On the work front, the Encores! Gala work is fnished unless something else turns up this morning or tomorrow, the score for THE RED MILL has a complete bar count and I have to begin work on ROBERTA. I've also got three charts to write for the Appalachian Christmas rehearsals by Oct 31; I think we now have a cast for Hilton Head.

Montag afternoon greetings from the MS Amalyra!  Richard and I had a delightful train trip yesterday from Paris to Nuremberg (via Frankfurt), taxied right to our boat, and were all settled in by dinner time.  We set sail at 9pm last night on the Main/Danube Canal and docked this morning in Bamberg.  We had a brisk (cold) walking tour of the historic city center that concluded with soft pretzels and the famous "smoke" beer.  Our cruise resumed during lunch and we've just left the canal and are now on the Main River, headed for our next port - Wurzberg.

Sorry I didn't check in yesterday.  After dinner the internet was quite wonky on the boat and when I tried to open HHW I got this message:

“The website you are trying to reach has been blocked by the Ship Web Filter, as it affects the entire ship internet performance or contains content deemed unsuitable” Reason: Blacklisted due to Forums & Newsgroups

If you believe this is an error or need to access this link please contact your reception or HotelManager."

As you can guess, they've unblocked it for me...

TOD:  Roscoe's Chicken & Waffles is pretty delicious, but the one I really loved was Amber's Broasted Chicken.  Do they still exist out there anywhere, BK?  Here is in Kentuck, we have place called Richie's Fried Chicken which is damned good, very big, plump, juicy breast.  As for hot dogs, I love my Coney Islands with Cincinnati Chili and grated cheese on them (and onions and mustard).  The two main chains Gold Star and Skyline are both fine, but my favourite is Dixie Chili in Newport, Kentucky, the other side of the Ohio from downtown Cincinnati.

*I've actually been on a juice fast the past three days. I just needed something to reset my system after dealing with the kidney stones. I, apparently, had also strained some intercostal muscles somewhere along the line, so that was just another reason to get my insides in order. And now they are. And I should be easing back into my normal eating routine by the time I land in Chicago on Wednesday morning! ::)

Funny thing about my intercostal muscle strain: That was the same injury that sidelined a couple of cast member of Oklahoma!. -And I wasn't even doing the choreography!?!? ???

As for the Topic of the Day:

Fried Chicken: Gus's Fried Chicken in Memphis, TN; Skip Kennon's Fried Chicken in NYC.

Waffles: I like waffles, but don't love them. Even though I know I've had some good ones, nothing specific comes to mind right now.

Hot Dogs: The "Shack-ago" Dog at Shake Shack here in NYC; the "real" Chicago dogs at Portillo's and/or The Weiner's Circle in Chicago; the deep-fried(!) hot dog at Crif Dogs here in NYC.

However...

As much as I like Roscoe's, I really like the Chicken and Waffles combo at Buttermilk Channel in Brooklyn. Cheddar Waffles!!!!

Best fried chicken: The time a friend and I fried it in lard.

Best waffles: Another homemade experience in which we made chicken and waffles with plenty of hot sauce to balance the sweet of the syrup on top of crispy chicken and crispy waffles with warm, melting center.

Best hot dog: I had a kobe beef dog recently that was quite good. (That I didn't make.)

I'm along similar line. Loved "Thin Red Line," hated "New World." But I also loved "Badlands" and found "Days of Heaven" beautiful but cold, and I saw the latter at a time when I was really young and didn't know how to respond to cold movies.

Oh, wait...

Back to Waffles for a second...

I really do like the ones from the Wafels & Dinges trucks and carts here in NYC. Not only do they have dessert varieties, but they also have a maple-bacon one - with bits of bacon in the batter! - as well as one topped with pulled pork BBQ. True fusion cuisine! ;)

I'm just sort of surprises that "The Tree of Life" is already on DVD. Wasn't it just in the theatres this past summer, a few months ago?
