For anyone who hasn't heard it, Percy's score for THE OSCAR is awesome.

And for anyone who hasn't gotten it yet, THE PEOPLE IN THE PICTURE is mah-velous.  Touching and frequently laugh out loud hilarious.  The lyrics are exceptional.

TOD-- I love Easy Listening  (and never liked the name for that category of music--even as a kid).  One of my favorites was part of some Readers Digest 10 LP set.  It had "Lazy Afternoon, " "September in the Rain" and "More than You Know" on it.  I have a copy in the garage and must find it one of these days.  My, those arrangemnts were lush and dreamy.

Another fave - which was re-released on CD, is a Bobby Hackett CD that has "Stairway to the Stars" on it.  Bobby Hackett had some sort of contract dispute (with Capitol I think), and he was not allowed to record an album with another orchestra or band for awhile. They figured a solo trumpet album (or one with just another soloist) would never work.  So Bobby Hackett hired Buddy Cole to play the theatre organ.  They got the entire orchestra sound (with only one instrument) and Buddy's trumpet swimming around in an empty theatre.  It's a great album.

Betsy was recounting her visit to the Holocaust Museum in Washington D.C. and was talking about how they had the graphic video hidden behind knee walls so that those with kids or who didn't want to see it didn't have to.  Zach, ever the innovative thinker, asked, "What do midgets do?"  Grandpa and Grandma were not amused.  ;)

TOD:

My favorite Johnny Mathis number?

Read this short excerpt from my memoir, and you will see:

Paul [Francis Webster] and Jerry Livingston had been hired by Marty Melcher to write a
tune for Julie, a suspense drama that Doris Day was making at MGM in
1956.

“Her co-star, Louis Jourdan, convinced her that the song was all
wrong for her,” Webster recalled. “It didn’t fit her image.
“And, I was the one who suggested that Frenchman for the part.”

Rights to the song reverted back to the songwriters. They placed it
with a New York music publisher, who sent it on to Johnny Mathis. The
singer recorded the number, and it became a smash. Years later, it hit
again as a Country/Western entry, sung by Slim Whitman and, years
after that, my wife (#3) Sandy and I danced to it at our wedding.

Its title: “The Twelfth of Never.”

Great story.  I think the song was meant to wait for Johnny to sing it.

TOD

In the '60s and '70s I only listened to easy listening music. I had various Frank Chacksfield, Stanley Black, Johnny Keating, Werner Muller albums and I loved those Decca (London) Phase 4 LPs - "The Sizzling Twenties" by Eric Rogers, which I still have, is a great fun listen.

After arriving back home I found that my splendid clematis which has been climbing over the garden fence trellis for years and used to look wonderful in the spring when in flower, has suddenly died. It had completely dried up in the space of a few days. I should have taken more care to keep it watered - we've had hardly any rain here for a couple of months.

So,Sunset Blvd was interesting to say the least.  Norma sung the heck out of the score, so that was good.  The ensemble was great, lots of variety of people, shapes, sizes, voices.  The set design was good, some great projections, some not-so-great projections, but they seem to work well.  Max, Betty and Joe were horrid to say the least.  Max more than the others.  Then there was the over all direction... bad character choices, blocking, bits, etc - I threw up my hands several times saying "what the HECK was THAT?".  I know I'm being critical, and I'm not saying my direction was stellar either - oh and he was also the choreogrpaher... and it looked like a middle school production.    Did I mention that the set was good?  And Norma was awesome?  Now that Sunset Blvd is out there to be produced by almost anyone, you'll have to remind me NOT to go to another local production.

Sometimes things "gang aft agley" and I did not get to Toyland after my wonderful lunch. After a walk to the 6th Avenue subway at 56th Street to find there was no downtown service - the MTA goes out of their way to screw up weekend plans - I had to determine how to proceed. There was a No 7 bus going uptown pulling in to the bus stop so I grabbed it and I am home. Tomorrow I will make the trek to Toyland.

I can putz around here until 3:45 or so, then catch a bus back to City Center to see Rob and his parents.

I'm up after ten hours of sleep.  I guess I needed it, and it was easy since it's very gray out and that always helps me to sleep.  But a jog is out now, and I'll have to go to Mystery and Imagination in about thirty minutes.
