To me when choosing a musical number for tv I would want to:

1. find a number that will best represent the show

2. feature some of the nominated performers

3. give the audience a real idea what the show is about

4. make people want to see the show

I really have no idea how the numbers are chosen because most of the numbers i saw did not do any of the things i listed above.
I love Evita so much. But I wish so much that they could have shown us Eva Peron. That's just one example.

I also found it so odd that for Best Original score we had 2 plays, 1 Wildhorn, and then the winner.

Was Michael McGrath's foreshadowing (at the end of his speech) meant to imply that he would soon be  doing a HONEYMOONERS - THE MUSICAL?

I thought Jim Belushi was tapped for THE HONEYMOONERS.  What happened to that?  Did someone figure out that Belushi is not an actor?

TOD - my favorite moments from the broadcast were Judy Kaye's speech and the number from ONCE, although that selection didn't give Cristin Milioti much to do.  She was also slighted by the NY1 interviewer on the red carpet, who concentrated more on Phylicia Rashad's daughter and the other girl in the group.  I also liked the fact that Richard and I watched the entire program together, remembering seeing in person many of the people we were seeing on TV last night.

I am enjoying a week off from gigging, so will be doing a lot of writing and dealing with little things like, oh, you know, the house sale closing, the kids getting out of school and Zach leaving for China.  Oy.

Is there a rule that says FOLLIES can never win Best Musical?  ;)

Listening to two kind of funny old Glen Campbell albums on one CD this morning.  Both of them have "spoken" interludes in various tunes which are hysterical.

Yes, what happened to the IN MEMORIUM segment?

They did it off broadcast during a commercial break so just the people in the Beacon Theatre saw it.

They did many things off broadcast. God forbid you should bore people with awards presented to those stupid book writers or choreographers or orchestrators or Actor's Equity getting a special Tony or even Bernadette Peters getting the Isabelle Stevenson Award.

FROM SATURDAY  TCB SAID

Quote from: John G. on June 09, 2012, 04:30:27 PM
Thanks, Danise.

I'm in Rome today and too tired now to post any more photos. I leave tomorrow. So, I'll be off for a few days.

I think Rome is wonderful, but it's also too hectic  and noisy after a relaxing week away from  people. The throngs are just enormous, everywhere you turn. We went to the Trevi Fountain and you had to fight to get near the water. We saw the Spanish steps but didn't go near them for the same reason. There just wasn't enough time to get anywhere near the Coliseum or the Vatican or any place like that. Another trip.

You never try to visit the Vatican during the summer months (including June).  It was crowded when I was there in November, but you were still able to breathe and you could actually stand next to some of these people without the fumes killing you..

Did you mean the fumes coming from the people?
LOL.  If you were standing near some of the same the people I was, yes.

I didn't see the Tony Awards. I have only seen a few clips on the youtubes. But it seems to me as though the whole show has really improved from when I last saw it years ago. Neil Patrick Harris seems to be a real gem as the host. The new traditional closing number must have everyone scrambling during the show to write lyrics.

I just pulled up last night's MAD MEN On Demand, and there's something so hideously wrong with the quality of the broadcast that I shut it off after five minutes.  The image is fuzzy, jerky, audio is out of sync...while the "AMC HD" logo blazes brightly in the corner.  Gotta wonder what somebody's (Comcast's?) problem is.  Maybe this is what you get first thing in the morning??  Can't be.  Will try again later.

A few likes and dislikes, off the top of my head...

ONCE:  I don't know much about it but now I want to see it.

THE BEST MAN:  Looks simply delicious.  Want!

EVITA:  No.  DR Jrand and I were saying how that is a favorite number.  It was technically good -- and how great not to hear a train wreck in that one tricky section.  But there was no Che there, or much of anything else.  And no indication at all of how good or bad the Eva is.  Terrible choice for the show.

PORGY AND BESS:  No.  Confirmed everything I've read and heard since day one.  I wouldn't be able to sit through this total re-writing of the work.
There is a video on YouTube or somewhere (maybe bluegobo.com) of the Evita cast in London doing "What's New,  Buenos Aires" and the choreography is just horrible. Plus Elena Roger, or whatever her name is, is vocally uninspiring. I'm really not looking forward to seeing the new clip.

I liked all of the acceptance speeches with the EXCEPTION of all of those involved in P/B who spoke as though they were doing some great inspired work instead of a hack job on a classic.

AND the second man who spoke for CLYBOURNE PARK - pretentious and boring.....both of which I have been called.

CD ordered!

Don't know this one at all, but I'm looking forward to hearing the Previn.

(Coincidentally, I just saw this morning that DEAD RINGER has been announced -- along with BABY JANE -- for Blu-ray release this fall.)

Well, DR JRand, the material makes all the difference.  He's much kinder and gentler in HARVEY.

TOD:

I agree that the opening number from THE BOOK OF MORMON was fun.

But, I also think that that particular number was deliberately chosen for reasons other than its entertainment value.

The Tony Awards should be about Theatre...not politics.

They are doing HARVEY at the ZACH in Austin next season.  I just might go see it.

The last time I saw HARVEY on stage was with Joe E. Brown when I was 5-years old.

I remember that I was very disappointed that the rabbit never appeared on stage.

DR Druxy, when was your reading in Austin at the Baker St. Pub? And which one of the two will it be at? I might, just might, be able to make it, if i get through the jet lag and the brain fog.
