Last night we watched a 1958 movie we think should have been nominated for director & best film, THE BIG COUNTRY.  Worthy was the best supporting actor award to Burl Ives.

There are many moments of quiet when far more is conveyed than sound, action, or words could thanks to the fine directing and the superb acting.

The flawless cast includes Gregory Peck, Jeanne Simmons, Caroll Baker, Charles Bickford, Chuck Connors, Alfonso Bedoya, and Charlton Heston.  Yes, even Heston was good.

I just wish people would dress up more today.....

NEWS FLASH:  THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A PAIR OF DRESS JEANS.  JEANS ARE NOT APPROPRIATE FOR WEDDINGS OR FUNERALS.....JUST BARELY APPROPRIATE FOR GRADUATIONS AND EVENINGS AT THE THEATRE!!!

Very much agree with you DR Jrand62. Wanting to dress casually is usually just an excuse to dress scruffily.

I know that the very mention of her name causes some of the dear readers, here,  to seeth with anger; however, I thought Jane Fonda looked fantastic last night.

Of course, one very good thing about last night's Oscars was that they DIDN'T do the tributes to the best actors and actresses as they announced those winners.  That idea was a pretty bad one.

That was a real relief. I hope that idea is gone for good. It seemed very "reality TV" driven.

How nice to see DR Edi here!

Another foodstuff that's all but extinct (except in trendy places where you can pay a fortune for one because, you know, it's a hot trendy retro thing):  the New York Egg Cream.

(Good thing I can make them right here in the comfort of home.)

My chest is still hurting (congested). My sister gave me some Vick's vapor rub to try. Never tried it before. Hopefully the smell won't bother me. I think if it's pepperminty or like ben gay i will be fine.

You've mean you've never smelled Vick's Vapo-Rub??  It's menthol and eucalyptus, not pepperminty at all.

I don't know what Bengay smells like.

I read this morning that Andy Griffith was not mentioned in the memoriam tribute, along with others.  Really, who decides which actors are included and are they all too young to remember his fine movie career?
Sounds like they left out a lot of people, especially those who started in movies but did a lot of TV work, such as Larry Hagman and Lupe Ontiveros. They'll never get those things right, but, seriously, there are numerous places online that log which celebrities died in the preceding year. You'd think they would use something like that.

I think that they could've shown/featured Marvin Hamlisch when Barbra started to sing, but then continued with more people for the rest of the song...just my 2˘.

Thank you to DRs JRand, George, and Jane for the congrats for our nephew!  We don't know details yet, but Richard is going to call his brother (Chris' dad) this evening.
And more congratulations.

I can't remember if I have already offered congrats to DR Ginny's nephew.  If not, I offer them now.

Re: Kristen Stewart.

Well most people love her because of her Twilight role.

I think she was actually in pain last night. She said on the after show that she had cut her foot open (which was why she was hobbling).

Maybe she fell wearing 9" heels?

Custard pie.  No one ever makes custard pies anymore.
You need to come to San Antonio. Buttermilk pie, chess pie and a favorite of mine, lime chess pie are all available at numerous places around town.

Not true.  My Aunt Doris made one at Christmas (primarily for my cousin Butch, her first-born, but she still let me have some).

:D

How was it?

Oddly, Johnson's frozen custard pie was rather good.   When we lived in Michigan one of the markets sold a delicious custard pie and I haven't seen it since.

I want to see Jane drive all the way to Michigan for a custard pie!

But, if they did that, George, we wouldn't have been able to see Barbra as she sang!

I've always wondered, too, so thanks for the link.  However, that only explains what it is, but not why it's called a "chess" pie.

So, I looked and found THIS link, as well as THIS link. :D

Well, we're waiting now to see if our Aunt Minnie accepts the offer. I just sent all of her dialogue to Ireland so her agent can show it to her.  I'm hoping she says yes.

I've discovered  that my shoulder and neck pains may be computer related, so I have to start some exercises and Joshie has a masseur for me to see.

The columnists over at the New Yorker online are busy sacrificing Seth McFarlane to the Gods of Politics, Women's Lib, and the Gay Agenda.

There are several articles, but here is a start.

Some thoughts about last night's singing:

Shirley Bassey:  I was a bit distraught that she seemed to favor only her lower register.  I feared the worst....until she hit those last notes.  She obviously had been "saving" her voice for the money notes.   I was very glad for her.  Good show!

Jennifer Hudson:  I'm not fond of the arrangement, but she was powerful.  Sorry many of you did not think so.

Barbra Streisand:  I thought it unusual that they would linger over Marvin Hamlisch. It seemed to say he was the most important of all they managed to memorialize (to the exclusion of such folks as Andy Griffith).  But...the song and the singer are so inextricably linked to Hamlisch and his Oscars for song and score ("The Way We Were") that it was more than forgivable.  And Streisand has powerful pipes.

The "Les Mis" number:  Loved it.

I agree with Ron.  I loved Bassey, Hudson, and Streisand.  I also Loved the LES MIZ number; and I even enjoyed "All That Jazz."

Last night I watched most the Oscars sitting in my recliner.  Nicky loves to curl up on my lap when I am in the recliner.  Unfortunately, I don't sit there very often because it is kind of a risky move getting from the wheelchair into the recliner,

Anyway, during the show, Nicky got up and went over to his drinking fountain on the other side of the room.  He was walking back to the recliner when Cathereine Zita Jones started singing "All That Jazz."  Nicky stopped in his tracks and looked up at the big screen.  He must have watched about a minute before he stopped watching and came back to the chair.

The academy has a committee which goes over the lists.  The claim they have to make hard choices and eliminate some folks, perhaps because they weren't as well-known for their movies as much as they are known for their TV appearances.

They tend to show a lot of folks no one "out here" has much knowledge of.  Given the time factor (i.e., they always go OVER), they could include all the names without any problem.   TCM Does this sort of thing SO much better!

Maybe they should drop it if they can't include everyone.  It would be very easy to cut out a few jokes and add the extra names.  It is just wrong when they leave people out.

I thought the "In Memoriam' section was handled very nicely last night.  I think the fact that George Clooney was asked to announce it shows that the Academy were trying to put more importance to the segment and to improve over the last few years where they have messed up.
