Well, you've read the notes, the notes spoke of long telephonic conversations, and now it is time for you to post until the long telephonic cows come home.

For those who may have missed this in last evening's posts:

Kritzerland is proud to present a new limited edition soundtrack CD release of an all-time classic score to an all-time classic film:

HOW GREEN WAS MY VALLEY

Music Composed and Conducted by Alfred Newman

Richard Llewellyn’s 1939 novel, How Green Was My Valley, was a popular success, so much so that Twentieth Century-Fox purchased the screen rights immediately and released their Academy Award-winning film version just two years later.  And what a film it was – lyrical, poetic, beautiful, dramatic, heartwarming, funny – with a perfect cast including Walter Pidgeon, Maureen O’Hara, Donald Crisp, and young Roddy McDowell.  Add to that the simple yet majestic direction by John Ford and you had a film that audiences flocked to and loved and have loved ever since, generation to generation, on television, and then home video and now Blu-ray.  The film won the 1941 Best Picture Oscar (over Citizen Kane), as well as Oscars for direction, supporting actor, cinematography and art direction.  It received five other nominations, including one for the magnificent and magical score by Alfred Newman.

Newman’s score stands high at the top of his many brilliant achievements.  His main theme is one of the most memorable and beautiful works he ever created.  The score is simply one brilliant cue after another, each capturing the humanity and warmth of the characters, setting the mood, underscoring the drama and pathos and humor as only Alfred Newman could.

The previous Arista CD release of How Green Was My Valley, which has been out-of-print for many, many years, was almost but not quite complete.  The previous release was taken from a premixed and assembled 1/4" element that had been retained by Len Engel.  This new Kritzerland edition comes from Fox's archival 1/4" rolls made in the 1980s off the first generation optical film, and was newly restored, mixed, and assembled, allowing for the opening up of many of the cues that had previously been combined together. Most of the cues were recorded with separate close-up and long shot perspectives, allowing for the creation of a stereo presence. Other cues were recorded with monaural sound only. The score is presented chronologically, with mono and stereo material indexed separately.  The sound is much improved save for only two cues, the main and end title, which were available to us only in the condition they were in.  Happily, the main title is very short and is completely vocal with no orchestra – once that’s done we settle in to the beautiful, lush, rich sound that was a Fox and Alfred Newman trademark.  As a bonus we present the end title in stereo without the vocal. The film was recently released on Blu-ray and the CD is a perfect companion to it.

And be sure to check out our other release, which is A Time For Singing, the musical version of How Green Was My Valley – how often can that happen?  A Time For Singing has a score by John Morris and lyrics by Gerald Freedman and Morris.   A perfect way to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day!

How Green Was My Valley is limited to 1000 copies only.  The price is $19.98, plus shipping.

CD will ship the last week of April but preorders placed at Kritzerland usually ship one to five weeks early (we’ve been averaging four weeks).  To place an order, see the cover, or hear audio samples, just visit www.kritzerland.com.

Kritzerland is extremely happy to announce a new limited edition cast album, the first-ever CD release for:

A TIME FOR SINGING
Original Broadway Cast Recording
Music by John Morris
Lyrics by Gerald Freedman and John Morris

Richard Llewellyn’s 1939 novel, How Green Was My Valley, was a popular success, so much so that Twentieth Century-Fox purchased the screen rights immediately and released their Academy Award-winning film version just two years later.  The film itself is very musical, with its beautiful score by Alfred Newman, and a lot of townspeople singing a lot of tunes.  So, it must have seemed a natural for such a musical property to be turned into an actual musical, and in 1966 that’s exactly what happened with the aptly retitled A Time for Singing.  The team responsible for musicalizing How Green Was My Valley was first-time Broadway composer John Morris, and first-time book and lyric writers Gerald Freedman and Morris.

An impressive cast was assembled, including Shani Wallis, Laurence Naismith, Tessie O’Shea, and Ivor Emmanuel.  The choreographer was Donald McKayle, and the sets were by the great Ming Cho Lee, lighting by Jean Rosenthal, and costumes by Theoni V. Aldredge.  Orchestrations were by Don Walker and the musical direction by Jay Blackton – in other words, a Class A cast and creative team straight down the line.  A Time for Singing opened on Broadway on May 21, 1966 after ten previews.  The show received humdrum reviews and closed after only forty-one performances.  Over the years, a cult has grown for A Time for Singing, thanks to its excellent cast recording that was issued by Warner Bros. Records.  The score is beloved by hordes of theater music fans and the album was always a sought-after collector’s item.  It has taken a long time to bring it to CD, and we’re thrilled to be the ones to do it.  Perhaps the show will be rediscovered – certainly the score is worthy of rediscovery, with John Morris’s lush and beautiful music, and excellent lyrics by Morris and Freedman.

For this first-ever CD release, the original album masters were used – they were in pristine condition and the sound is absolutely stunning.  So, here, finally, is A Time for Singing and it is indeed truly a time for singing.

Check out our companion release – the first time ever complete soundtrack release to How Green Was My Valley, the source for A Time For Singing.  Score by Alfred Newman.  Get both – a perfect way to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day!

This edition is limited to 1500 copies only.   The price is $19.98 plus shipping.

CDs will ship the last week of April, however we may get them in earlier and if so will ship immediately.  No promises, but that’s always our hope.  To place an order, see the cover, or hear audio samples, just visit www.kritzerland.com.

This may be the first time a soundtrack and its musical have been announced together, but of course, it's not the first time that Kritzerland has released a soundtrack and its musical version..."The Apartment" and "Promises, Promises."  Who else has done that? :D

Good morning, all!

I slept rather well, although I was awake too many times with concerns over the conductor situation in August.  I'm up this morning to listen to the Act Two edits a few times before I head off to the Encores! sitzprobe for SUPERMAN.  I'm looking forward to meeting my surrogate son Joshie's parents there.

I finally watched the last episode of the BBC miniseries of HOW GREEN WAS MY VALLEY. It was quite a wonderful achievement, with an excellent cast.

TOD:
DVD:  How Green Was My Valley (the John Ford film), a couple of operas, Isadora
CD:  Dearest Enemy, Nat "King" Cole, Guy Haines, The Sleeping Beauty Ballet
   VCR:  porn

Back to the grind tonight, last two performances!  Happy to be over and done with it this weekend.  Time to move on.

Playing another sessions of auditions tomorrow.

Auditions:  hours of boredom interrupted by moments of sheer terror.

Friday morning greetings!  Today is the first full day of the Middletown AAUW 57th Annual Used Book Sale and I'm scheduled to work 11am-2pm.  Looking forward to hearing how last night's preview sale went.  We charge $5 admission for that and most of the customers are dealers.

Just time to grab another cup of coffee before CDs are up for order.  I would have ordered last night, but whenever I order something on PayPal "outside the system" I get paranoid about the order somehow falling between the cracks.  Silly, I know, especially when it's BK and Kritzerland, but there you have it.

Actually, that stuff for Superman makes the show look terrible.  They do no one a service shooting numbers at an early rehearsal.

Wow, i see the numbers are really controversial on All that Chat for the edited-down SUPERMAN video taht's on broadway.com - they feel much less "exposed' in the 20-minute video when bookended by the interviews with Strouse and Swenson and Mauzey et al.  (Alli Mauzey especially is a delightful interviewee.)

BK - they look awful in that broadway.com cut, with that awful stiff intro by the guy playing Superman.  The context that it's almost day two of reharsal is so clear in the BWW shoot, not clear at all in the Broadway.com cut.  Yikes to the Broadway.com cut!

Good morning, all.

Crazy day already and I'm feeling far behind.

Headed to Austin after work for a trip through SXSW and Rachael Ray's food parties and who knows what else my friend, Deb, has signed us up for.
