Good afternoon. I was up and out before sunrise this morning. We went up to look for butterflies. Found some, too.

Great trip up to the Hill Country. And I'm exhausted, which means only two more events today. I need time off.

I see that DR JoseSPiano has not been about here lately, but most of you are friends of his on Facebook, so you know that he will be a featured singer (along with a few hundred other folks) on the "No Time at All" track of this new cast album:
]

I doubt seriously that I will ever hear that CD.

Does anyone here remember seeing WHEN THE BOYS MEET THE GIRLS?  Interesting cast.  Connie Francis, Harve Presnell, Sam the Sham and the Pharohs, Herman's Hermits, Louis Armstrong, and ..... Liberace!

Just fast-forwarded my way through it, as it's not a very easy film to watch.  I think it's one that needs to be enjoyed with a few friends who've already had a couple of drinks.  Apparently it's based on GIRL CRAZY, and it retains several Gershwin songs.  There are definitely some wacky moments worth seeing and smiling at, and I'm pleased to report that the Liberace scene is just fine.  In fact, the movie would probably be a little better if he'd had more than just one performing number.

Went to pick up my yellow Parisian cake that I ordered two days ago - it wasn't there - they didn't have the order.  And they didn't care.  I bought the chocolate version and a strawberry shortcake and I will let them know they have lost me as a customer at that bakery forever.  If I want a Parisian cake I will simply go to the LA bakery that invented the cake - on 3rd Street near La Cienega.

Not good, especially their attitude.  Were the replacement cakes enjoyed?

What a lovely photos and memories, DR Ginny!

Finding these photos did, indeed, bring back some great memories, DR Singdaw!  I'd moved to Ohio by the time Mom & Dad took on this venture (he did the financial work and the graphic design - the logo is his).  They opened in 1979 and the store was up for sale when Dad died in 1984.  Mom took it off the market for a while, but proceeded to sell when Border's announced a new store 5 miles away.  It sold about the time Rob was born in 1985 and Mom moved to Phoenix the next year.

She sold just in time.

Yes, she did, DR Jane.  The buyer expanded into a larger corner space and still couldn't compete with the megastore.  She didn't have the book-selling skills my Mom had.

I remember a wonderful little book store in Michigan that went out of business after Barnes and Noble opened across the street.  There was another, even better, little store that survived until Border's opened.  It was sad.  I would shop the little stores first before going to the larger ones.

When I headed to the Y to swim this morning I was still feeling a bit off from a mild migraine I woke up with.  I really wanted the single lane.  I walked into the pool area and someone had just gotten out of the pool.  I think I broke my record getting my outer clothes off, grabbed my goggles and without putting them on walked as quickly as I could, with limited vision, to the lane.  Shortly after I began swimming more swimmers began arriving.  Boy was I lucky.

I had a good swim until a foot cramp forced me out of the pool 10 minutes early.  I walked the cramp off in the shallow end talking to a baby.  I can't tell you if I was chatting with a girl or a boy and the odd name was of no use.  It was Erta or something, means Welcoming in Zulu.  The parents were Caucasian if you were wondering, Keith did. ;D

We had about twenty-five people there, which filled the room, but several people who said they were coming of course didn't.  One person e-mailed me an hour before saying he couldn't be bothered to leave his house.  I truly am going to cleanse myself of certain e-mail addresses  and as I've said before, woe to those who didn't come who ever expect me to go to anything they're doing - won't be happening.

I read, and all that got a lot of laughs, which was lovely, especially the bit of Patrick Bronstein that I read.  This book is really the funniest of the Hofstetters.  Then I answered some very good questions, and then we served the two cakes, both of which completely went.  Then a few of us went not to Granville's but to BJ's where I had salmon and scallops, both of which were horrid.

A shame about dinner but better the signing went well.  I'm not surprised your reading, especially the Bronstein bits, received lots of laughs.

A Bronstein audio bit in the notes could be a fine way to start the day.

I wish I hadn't had what I had for dinner - it was stupid to order fish, actually, and I should have just had a salad or pasta or something.

A couple of months ago the University of Michigan Alumni Association asked on Facebook, "What would you pick as the song of your U-M years.  I replied, "Almost 45 years later, 'Hey, Jude' puts me right back in the Bursley Hall snack bar."  The Alumni magazine summer issue arrived today with the ultimate Michigan playlist on page 64.  My comment is #2 of 15.  Because they're listed in ascending chronological order, I should be #1 (as the earliest graduate), but they put Dhani Jones - famous football player - in the top spot.
