I'm feeling somewhat revived after eating dinner, so here is a short version of what happened.

Ten hikers and one husband, Allen, with an injured leg, drove out to see the fall colors.  Allen had a book to read and was going to wait to have lunch with us where we parked, at Beckie's Cafe.

Ten of us headed out including a husband & wife who stopped to take photos and said they would meet us where the road crossed the path.  We didn't see them again until we finally made it back to Beckie's.  On a side note they apparently got separated from each other with the wife returning to the Cafe at 1:00 and the husband at 2:00. ;D

That left eight of hike to do the full hike.  It was my idea to cross the river on one bridge and back on a 2nd bridge which we never found.  Once it became obvious we missed the bridge for the almost life of me I have no idea why we didn't backtrack.  At the point we waded across a wide creek to reach the river we really should have turned back.  The problem was the voices to forge ahead were louder than those who wanted to backtrack.

Once again on a trail along side the river we were still on the wrong side of it and went left looking for a bridge instead of turning right, back towards where we came from. ::)  Eventually I stated so all could here me, and not just the few, that there wasn't a bridge in the direction we were heading.  Someone said there must be so we continued on.

Suddenly we had a sick person.  Every time we went uphill she had trouble breathing, was nauseated & felt faint. ???  At that point we should have turned around but there were still those that thought it was too far with a sick person.  Unfortunately our doctor hiker was the one with the injured leg, however, his nurse wife was there to check on the sick woman.  I must say the sick woman was a trooper through all of it.  It took a long time to get her up each hill and a group can only travel as fast as the slowest person.

Hours later, as I was the front scout at the time, I said we must have past the point were the bridge should have been and we were climbing too steep for the sick person.  FINALLY at around 5:00 we turned around.

Just as one woman and I were discussing that we should rush ahead and return to Beckie's in case the party was stranded in the dark, our leader and her husband decided they should go.  The plan was that they would drive back to the bridge where we would cross and meet us there, as close as possible, with a car.

When our remaining six saw them on the other side of the river suddenly (I was too far away for this decision) they changed the plans for us to meet at Beckie's.  I suppose they thought we were making better time than expected.

Once across the bridge it kept getting darker & darker and the moon was shining brightly.   While walking the last 20 minute stretch we heard sirens. :-[  When we arrived at a clearing and headed out to the main road there was a big van/suv, not really sure, filled with men waiting for us.  We wanted them to take the sick woman and one new gentleman who was rather wiped out back to Beckie's, but nooooo they insisted we were all getting in for a ride while the crew got out.  I must admit it felt darn good to sit.

The sheriffs were all so very nice.  We were all so very glad to be at Beckie's and not spending the night out there.  We all agreed that while the stream water was very cold it made our feet & toes feel better but would have been frightening to deal with overnight.

DR Jane, was the long hike intentional or did something happen?  Very concerning....glad you are safe and sound

Thanks.  Now for Keith & Allen's story while I was having an "adventure" on a beautiful autumn day along a river.

I'm not really sure about the time frame.  I think Allen called the sheriff's around 4:00.  Keith began to worry when he hadn't heard from me around 2:00.  By 5:00 he was searching who to call to find out if we were all missing or just me.  He called our leaders but they weren't home of course.

Sometime after 6:00, just as he was about to call the police, one of the husband's of a co-hiker called him and agreed Keith should call the police. At 6:50 the police called back and said I was safe.  A little after 7:00 Keith was extremely relieved when I called.  Beckie's was kind enough to let me use their phone in the kitchen to call him instead of having to go to a pay phone across the street.  I did leave money for the toll call.

That was an adventure.

Yes but it was the three husbands who really suffered.

Keith wanted me home with him but naturally everyone else wanted to eat.  He met me in the garage when I pulled in :D  It is nice to be loved so much.

Thanks DR Kevin.  It was a bit of a hike but none of the hills were really strenuous, at least for most of us.  It was beautiful out, and if we were not worrying others so or had a sick person I would have enjoyed it more.  I just wish the darn cell phone worked.

Had too much fun doing a work session with an eight-year-old ball of fire - she's amazing.  Then she and her dad and I had some dinner - I had a patty melt and no fries or onion rings.

I came home to approvals on both packages I've been waiting on, so that's good - both go off to the printers in the morning and hopefully we can have CDs in hand in a couple of weeks.

DR Elmore,  our rehearsal last night was actually pretty rough, but we'll be ready, we always come through at concert time. The theme for our concert is "It's Iowa" featuring numbers written, arranged, published or about Iowa.
Some of them are a stretch but here's what we are playing:

Not in concert order:
Fanfare and Processional by Chuck Dibley (our conductor) he wrote it originally for a string quintet for his daughter's wedding, it's really wonderful
Selections from The Music Man
Part of The Slavonic Dances by Dvorak
Paglacci Intermezzo By Leoncavallo, arranged by Andrew Glover, our guest conductor - from Iowa
Princess Oskloosa March by Barnhouse
Bridges by Chuck Dibley
Rushmore a Symphonic Prologue for Winds  by Alfred Reed
The Big Cage Circus Galop by Karl King
In the Mood, by Joe Garland
Small Town Sketches by David Moore (an Iowa composer)
Barnum and Bailey's Favorite march by Karl King

100% of the door goes to charity.  This time it's the Westwood High School. They had some music trip to California and all their equipment was stolen, so we're donating to help replace it.  Some of the band members are playing with us for 4 of the pieces.

I feel really bad, but I had to break a dinner party engagement that someone invited me to more than a month ago. With the barbecue book so all-encompassing, I guess I spaced it out. And now I've made plans to be in Houston for the next two days. I told him that even if I were back in town by 6:30 p.m. Saturday, I probably wouldn't be in a condition to eat anything.

I don't usually do that sort of thing.

What a neat idea for the program! I love Dvorak's Slavonic Dances; some have really tricky rhythms.  I also like the idea of the proceeds going to charity.

Our band is totally volunteer. Lots of band directors, retired band directors, people who just want to play, and some high school and college kids.  A really fun mix. We are sponsored by different businesses so all our expenses are covered and every concert all the door goes to a different charity.

DR Cillaliz, I hope that you will be okay. And hopefully the middle car driver will be fine too.

Did the person who hit you guys give some reason as to why they would hit a bunch of cars that are stopped?  I can't believe that someone could be so stupid.

My guess is he was texting, but I don't know.  He was very upset when I was around him and liability is so clear I didn't see a reason to bother him.   There were either two or three cars ahead of me, so he would have had to have missed seeing 5 stopped cars in a row.  He had to be texting or something

That would be crazy if he was doing that. If he was going to text why would he do it while he was driving. I could maybe see at a stoplight or something. Crazy! I hate to see anybody upset. But really he caused a lot of damage.

Waiting for the premiere of White Collar (actually it just started). This is the first time that we have ever gotten it the same night as in the US. Since we don't get the USA network in Canada we are normally months behind. So this is exciting since it is one of my favorite shows (and there was a big cliffhanger at the end of last season).

DR Jane that is crazy. Especially that you had to go ahead (instead of backtracking). Just because that was what the majority decided. I guess it's better to all stay together. But really if the others are making you do something dumb.  That must have been tough with a sick person. :(

I was wondering how you could have gotten lost since you seem to hike so often.

Do cell phones not work anywhere around there?

My first job in Phoenix back in 1986 was as a law clerk/bailiff for a judge in the Superior court.  Since that time he's been on the Arizona Supreme Court, a federal district and now a senior judge.  Today I got a call looking for me.. it was his law clerk trying to find me to invite me to a reunion of all his law clerks.  How cool is that!  So....there may be a very quick trip to AZ in my near future.  I'm waiting for the details in an email. I think if I only spend one night there, Callie will be ok even if a sitter can't give her meds.  It would be pretty cool to see him again.  I loved working for him
