TOD:

I don't share the distaste for remakes that some have, and I never judge a remake before I have seen it (of course, I don't always have any great interest in seeing the remake, either)

The 1990s TV movie remake of I MARRIED A MONSTER FROM OUTER SPACE was great fun.

The 1970s and the 2000s remakes of KING KONG were awful, I thought.

The remake of MIGHTY JOE YOUNG was enjoyable, but I don't need to see it again.

I have never seen the remakes for CAPE FEAR, PSYCHO, INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS, THE BLOB, or many others that seem to be very popular.

I have seen remakes of DR JEKYLL AND MR HYDE that I enjoyed. And the UK's Hammer Studios had some fine remakes of assorted horror films. Their version of THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA is one of my all time favorites.

Many of my favorite Bollywood movies are remakes. GUMNAAM, which is a remake of AND THEN THERE WERE NONE, is quite good. And I love the Bollywood remakes of MADAME X and NO MAN OF HER OWN, not to mention the Hindi versions of CHUCKY and NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET, both of which I love!

The 1990s TV movie remake of I MARRIED A MONSTER FROM OUTER SPACE was great fun.

And just remember, there are no 'bad' Allison Hayes movies...some are just better than others.

I'm finally up for good - just the kind of night I didn't need, part of which was my fault as I should have turned on the air for an hour before going to bed.  It was just too darned hot.  I fell asleep about one-fifteen and woke up at four, fell back asleep around six-thirty and woke up at eight-thirty - and I'm feeling VERY queasy and I just need this crap to stop now.  No time for queasy or nausea, just can't do it.

I'm not sure if I still have it, but I used to have a Beverly Garland/Roger Corman signed lobby card from this film.  Never saw the  movie.

Good day to all!

I'm just popping by to wish everyone a wonderful day. I've had a bit of a rough ride over the weekend, as it was my first Mother's Day without Mom. I'll be okay. I just didn't want to bring my grief in here at its height.

I'll be back and much perkier soon.

Cheers!  :)

You should watch GUNSLINGER, DR Druxy. It is not a bad movie...it isn't good, but it isn't bad. And you have both Allison Hayes and Beverly Garland to look at, if nothing else.

TOD:

The shot-for-shot remake of PSYCHO was an exercise only for the editor and DP.  It was time spent unwell.  And, Danny Elfman who usually saves Tim Burton from himself, should never, ever butcher Herrmann ever, ever again.  A supreme example of lack of creativity and an utterly misguided unremarkable remake of an un-remake-able film and genre classic.

The absolutely unending remake of GODZILLA with Matthew Broderick.  His was the only character that I was rooting for Godzilla to stomp on and end the movie prematurely.

TOD:

The completely tacky decision by Christopher Reeve after severely injuring his spine and becoming a real wheelchair patient, to remake REAR WINDOW for television.  The TV movie was awful and the "realism" proffered by Reeve was absolutely irrelevant to his efforts.  All he did was remind everyone that if they wanted to see "Rear Window" they should stop watching the TV, fire up the VHS and pop in the tape.

I was particularly miffed at that time that Reeve's production company somehow had the ability to force Universal to put "Rear Window" in moratorium so that the only version home viewers could watch was his and not Hitchcock's.  A very sad case, and a very bad example of hubris on the part of an actor who was very beloved by the public even before tragedy befell him.

TOD:

THE MALTESE FALCON is probably the greatest of all remakes.  It was the 3rd filmed version of the novel.

John Carpenter's remake of THE THING is much better than the Howard Hawks original.

The Coen Brothers' TRUE GRIT is a better overall movie than Henry Hathaway's original, but John Wayne was a better "Rooster" than Jeff Bridges.  Wayne's portrayal had humor.

I hated the remake of 3:10 TO YUMA.  The original is a classic.

One should never remake a hit; only a flop.  Otherwise, you are competing with the memory of the first movie.

You'd think that someone would listen...but no, "they" seem to only remake the already good stuff.  At least, the rumored remake of "Casablanca" with Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez never happened. :o

Also with Matthew Broderick, the TV remake of "The Music Man."

And you can add "Bye, Bye Birdie" with Jason Alexander to the "What Were They Thinking??" list. :P

Good morning, all! I finally got eight hours of sleep for the first tie in over a week, and I'm very happy.  I'm not so happy about the schlep to Trinity Church on a cane, steps, and subway, but I have no choice. I had a fantastic time at yesterday's rehearsal, and I'm looking forward to the next three weeks of this project.

DR Singsong, I hope your surgery goes well today.

DR vixmom, I'm with you. The older I get, the more of a socialist I become. When I was in London in 1999, I needed an emergency room visit. I was in London for the JUBILEE rehearsals and broadcast performances, and I had just enough money to get hem. I was terrified of what this ER trip would cost me but I needed to see a doctor, and I saw a very pretty Scottish doctor in a hospital in Earl’s Court. I paid nothing, and my shock at this news seemed to amuse the clerk checking me out of the ER.

Having spent too many years in Manhattan struggling to keep up my health insurance premiums on my own, this was a blessing. I’ve lived nearly 68 years in this country,  fed on the propaganda that the USA is the richest, best country ever, and it’s humiliating to see how misguided so much of the propaganda now appears. We can spend trillions on needless war and let our citizens rot, half the country diets and the other half starves. There's something wrng in this picture.

This has been posted before, but it's relevant:  The Newsroom - America is not the greatest country in the world anymore...(Restricted language).

I hope that this is a good thing...Kristin Chenoweth coming back to Broadway

Quote
NEW YORK (AP) — "Glee" and "Wicked" star Kristin Chenoweth is chugging back to Broadway in the stylish screwball musical "On the Twentieth Century."

Producers said Tuesday that the Tony- and Emmy-winner will co-star with Peter Gallagher in the show adapted from the 1934 film with lyrics by Betty Comden and Adolph Green and music by Cy Coleman. Scott Ellis will direct and Warren Carlyle will choreograph.

The show is about a shameless — and penniless — producer who hightails it out of Chicago after his stage version of "Joan of Arc" flops. He needs a hit and hopes one of his leading ladies who went on to fame to Hollywood can help. They meet aboard the Twentieth Century Limited train, as it travels to New York City.

The show will begin Feb. 12 and open March 12 at the American Airlines Theatre. The previously announced production in that theater of "Noises Off" has been postponed to fall 2015.

Chenoweth, whose TV credits include "The West Wing," ''The Good Wife" and "Pushing Daisies," was last on Broadway in the 2010 revival of "Promises, Promises." Her film credits include "Bewitched," ''The Pink Panther" and "RV."

"On the Twentieth Century" will be the latest Broadway revival of a Comden-Green musical. "On the Town," the 1944 musical about three sailors on shore leave in New York City, starts up in October at the Lyric Theatre.

TOD:

The Rene Clair AND THEN THERE WERE NONE and its remake in the early Sixties entitled TEN LITTLE INDIANS (which may have been the story's title, I don't remember for certain) are a good example of a great film, not a classic, being turned into, an okay film, and one that was made not to say anything new, but to fill the under-half of a double feature.  Now, who in their right mind, would dare duplicate the inimitable actors Barry Fitzgerald and Walter Huston?  No one could play tongue-in-cheek in a cat-and-mouse better than those two.  I know that there are many that like the remake, but come on, Fabian and Hugh O'Brian?  It was like a TV movie on the big screen.  Not even Christopher Lee could save that one for me.
