THE PROBING OF SITZ

Well, you've read the notes, the notes had both sitz and probed, and now it is time for you to post until the sitzing, probing cows come home.

BK, it's really fun and interesting to read about what you're doing with Li'l Abner.  There isn't a theater group her in Olympia (anymore) that would do that kind of a show...and that's a shame.  There's a lot of theater in Olympia, but no one that does the big, community theater musicals anymore.

I'm hoping that this new way of doing the show will show that it CAN be done.  I haven't really gone into exactly what I've done to make the show leaner and faster and how I've fixed every single dated reference in the show - that's what's always blamed when the show doesn't land.

Just a sidebar on the TOD:

I hate the current economics of Broadway and how the size of the pit orchestra (as compared to the orchestras of Broadway's Golden Age) has been eviscerated. How much more challenging it must be now to be an orchestrator, with such diminished opportunity!

Good morning, all!  I have very little to report.

I have to be at Trinity Church today by 10:30 so we can run the concert and I can hear the singers on mike with the piano for balance.  It's going to be good.  Patricia Noonan, our soprano, is a beautiful brunette with a wonderful voice; I've known our soubrette Meggie Cansler since FINIAN'S RAINBOW, and I love her; she makes me laugh; our tenor, Michael Marcotte, is one of our ROBERTA Collegians and he makes me laugh; and Arlo Hill, our baritone, just won the Lotte Lenya Competition, and he's fantastic, just excellent.  It's been such fun working with all of them.

After that, I want to work on my notes for George Gershwin's PRIMROSE, his 1924 London show we're presenting next week.  Meggie and Michael will be back for that, with Sara Jean Ford, who's on the Victor Herbert Collected Songs, Weston Wells Olson who's currently in LES MIZ, and Tim McDevitt, another one of the ROBERTA Collegians, and a fantastic baritone.

DR ChasSmith, I'm sorry I will not see you today or next week.

Have you all seen the fantastic video of the cat rescuing a 4-year-old boy from attack by a dog? They just showed the video on this morning's news. The cat's actions are amazing; the boy needed 10 stitches, so he couls hae been really mauled if the family's cat hadn't rescued him.

Good morning, all.

DR Elmore, even though I just got up and am groping for my coffee, I checked the train schedules -- and I would have to be running out the door right now.  :(    Here's to a great day of it, and I shall look forward to the 29th.

The probed sitz sounds great, and I am all too familiar with the challenge of getting even a four-piece band's volume down to where it needs to be.

It looks like Tams-Witmark doesn't provide info on current and future productions.  I know LI'L ABNER isn't done all that often, and I was surprised to hear that some regional group out in deepest darkest Connecticut did it a few years ago (if only I'd known!) and that it was successful for them.  The person relating that to me said he didn't think they changed any "dated" references, and that it still played just fine -- which may or may not be accurate reportage, so, whatever.  But a director buddy and I have more than once talked about our love for the show, and who knows, maybe after the dust has settled on BK's production I'll be able to kick those conversations back into gear.

Thursday morning greetings!  Taking it easy this morning before my 2pm haircut appointment and dinner with my sister and her husband.  They arrive today from Michigan for our cousin's wedding on Saturday.

DR ChasSmith, glad to hear your call to AAA was only for a lock-out.  I married into an auto club membership and have been very grateful for it several times.

I've had the AAA membership pretty much uninterrupted for over thirty years, DR Ginny, and even though I've only called them for something a handful of times in all those years, yesterday's experience was their crowing achievement and will forever be worth every penny.

TOD:

Jonathan Tunick: Promises, Promises; Follies, Company, Pacific Overtures

Michael Starobin: Sunday in the Park with George

Larry Moore: Jubilee

Hershey Kay: On the Twentieth Century

Don Walker: Most Happy Fella

Probably too many more to mention for original orchestrations. Can't think of too many re-orchestrated pieces I like, usually because the size of the orchestra has been reduced, rather than enhanced.

I also love my AAA membership...to date, I have never had to change a flat tire myself. And for that, I am grateful!

I, too, feel much safer on the road with my AAA.

While I always have my AAA card on me, I sometimes (seldom, but it happens) leave my cell phone behind.  That is when I feel something will happen and I'll have no easy way to call them.
