I also love my AAA membership...to date, I have never had to change a flat tire myself. And for that, I am grateful!
I, too, feel much safer on the road with my AAA.
While I always have my AAA card on me, I sometimes (seldom, but it happens) leave my cell phone behind. That is when I feel something will happen and I'll have no easy way to call them.
Yesterday the phone AND keys got locked in the car. Fortunately, I had my wallet in my pocket which made getting hold of AAA and identifying myself one hell of lot easier than it might have been.
What happened was this: I stopped at a fast food jernt for a small snack and some hot coffee, intending to get right back on the road. Instead of using the drive-thru, I went inside to use the restroom, then ordered and carried everything out to the car, sat down, and put the key in the ignition. Then I remembered I needed to transfer the hot coffee to my travel mug. (I NEVER drink out of those horrid hot paper cups and foul tasting plastic lids.) I got out to pour it, and being right next to another car, I shoved the door shut with my elbow and walked around the car to do the pouring.
Now, the car had been completely unlocked with the key remote, and since I'd then opened it up, nothing further should have happened. But a second or so after I shoved the door shut, the car's security system re-locked all doors. And there I was, with my (ahem) coffee in my hands. Basically, the security system behaved as though I'd remotely unlocked it but did NOT open a door. In that case, after 30 seconds it would re-lock.
Talk about a big FAIL there. The dealer just told me it could be the car's radio going bad (it controls the security system, and it's 12 years old) or just possibly there's a broken wire from the years of door-opening that sent the wrong door-open/shut signal. I'll be having them check it out tomorrow or Saturday. In the meantime, not that I'll ever repeat that scenario, but one new procedure is to have a second car key on my person at all times.
