Good Evening!... From Houston, Texas!

-Well, I guess I should be saying, "Howdy!" then..

The past two and a half days have been quite the whirlwind for me. Playing shows. Practicing shows. Cleaning. Packing. Etc., etc., etc...

I arrived in Houston this afternoon.... It's hot here! I just got back from an hour working with the director/choreographer and conductor, and we're all set for tomorrow's rehearsal. Whew!

Well... I would have checked in earlier, but it took me a while to get the wireless internet connection set up properly here... And the receptionist at the front desk also took a while activating my connection too. Hey, but at least it's wireless and fast!

So.. I have tons of post to catch up on from the past few days, but I also need to head out now and get some shopping done. Stock my fridge, pick up some "necessaries", etc.

*And I also need to find the fried chicken place that got a write up in the most recent issue of "Gourmet".

-It's all about the food!

We went to a new (-ish) museum all about the U.S. Constitution in Philadelphia, right near the Liberty Bell and Independance Hall.

It's good to be away from New York on a major holiday like Columbus Day: the parade draws more than a million, all claiming to be Italian. It's a very big deal, and so, when we selected our wedding date, we selected the Sunday smack dab in the middle of the big Columbus Day weekend. That way, out-of-towners could fly home and not miss work. But, to our sad surprise, the heathen in the rest of the country don't take off work for Columbus Day. My best man explained that many Californians traced their ancestry back to some pre-Columbian people and think of CC as an invader. He was only interested in opening up a swifter trade route than the long and tortuous land route to Asia. My cousin's wife, a lawyer in Florida, had something legal to do ... on a national holiday!? Ah, the best laid plans.

The Los Angeles Times runs a weekly column entitled "New York, N.Y." which, as you might surmise, keeps us Angelenos apprised of what's happening in the Big Apple.

Today's story was about the $20 admission price at the Museum of Modern Art when it reopens. In the story, the columnist placed the Metropolitan Museum of Art on Madison Avenue instead of Fifth Avenue.

I sent a somewhat cleverly worded e-mail to the editors this morning pointing out the error. Not only did I receive a response from the deputy editor expressing appreciation and indicating that a correction will run tomorrow, I also got a very nice note from the columnist herself, sincerely thanking me for pointing our her DUMB (her capitalization, not mine) mistake.

Isn't that exciting? Can you plotz?

That is correct. The stools at the bar and the dining room tables and chairs (which were carryovers from Cujo, the restaurant tenant previous to Mario's) remain, but the piano is gone and the place sits dark. It sat dark forever before Cujo moved in, then sat dark forever before Mario's moved in. I should establish a pool on when the next restaurant gets there. And how long it lasts.

I missed chat. Ever so sorry! I got home after All Staff Day (I won an award!...see below) and even logged in, but I got sidetracked cooking some ground beef for tomorrow's spaghetti feed at work and burning a DVD (that was filmed here in Olympia) that I totally forgot to chat. But once I started the DVD copying/burning process, my computer is running so slowly that I probably couldn't have been able to chat, even if I wanted to.

Anyway, the award that I won was the Purple Tree Award (any Timberland employee, substitute or volunteer can get one). The Green Tree Award is when someone makes a suggestion that saves the library money (get it...save money-green award?) without compromising patron services. The Purple Tree Award is when people do good things for the library such as a really good customer service incident or have a really good idea. What I did was make the suggestion of a partnership between our library and the Washington Center for the Performing Arts to cross-promote each other. The library made up a brochure (to be updated quarterly) that lists materials that the library has for the performers that are coming to the WCPA. The WCPA will put an ad for the library in every program. The selectors know in advance what performers are coming to the WCPA and can order material in advance. That way, the patrons of both the library and the WCPA know what they're going to see/hear/experience beforehand or they can explore and learn more about the performers that they're interested in. Pretty cool, huh?

Didn't have a chance for any DVDs today. Hopefully tomorrow I can watch something. THE PRIME OF MISS JEAN BRODIE is looking good and THE NAME OF THE ROSE hasn't made it to the player yet either thougyh it was on tap during the Friday Media Check last week.
