Well, for nine years I've been deliberating about writing a choral piece, Appalachian Requiem, for my father. It would be 4-5 folksongs/hymns from the Appalachian Mountains dealing with death, with hopefuly at least one funny song, and accompanied by fiddle and guitar. I just received a call about a commission for a choral piece, so I guess I'm going to actually write it and stop putting it off.

It was an unexpected call from completely out of the blue. My thoughts on theology are pretty agnostic, but I do believe in something; I've had too many run-ins with guardian/protective spirits at times of crisis not to believe something's watching out for me. Maybe it's those three pennies that DR JRand65 had me put in my window.

I'm thinking about a soloist and a layout something like this:
1. Lonesome Valley
2. Murder ballad
3. Something funny?
4. Mourning/Missing someone
5. Amazing Grace
I’ll use this as a roadmap while I do some digging around. God knows what I'll find.

In 1975 or so, I accompanied a friend from college and community theatre in the Miss Southwest Ohio pageant. She was actually quite good, but she didn't win anything. When they announced the winners, her mother got out of her seat and walked up the aisle and out of the theatre, saying quite loudly "Fuckfuckfuckfuckfuck . . ."

For the life of me, I cannot remember what she sang. I do remember that my friend Dick Newman played the drums.

Just to put a capper on this Monday (is it not over yet?), a beloved kitty is in stage four kidney failure. She first developed kidney disease over two years ago, and this is the final stage. Not only that, but she also has feline AIDS which (of course) she tested negative for when adopted several years ago. Apparently it can be passed from the mother and lay hidden. I found a lot of them really creepy. There were dogs dressed as hotdogs attacking and licking people dressed as ketchup. There were puppy monkey babies. There were singing sheep. And those were the memorable ones. Really a lot of what were they thinking moments.

That would be funny in a movie, but truly embarrassing in reality.

Yikes!!

Our Alaskan cruise, the one we met you and Tom on our way home from Seattle, had hurricane like winds on the last night. There was someone stationed at each exit to outside to prevent anyone from going out there. I don't know how high the waves were because it was night. I'm sure they weren't this bad since I never saw anything fall.
