The vet opens in a half hour. I really hope we find his owner. He belongs to someone. He is so friendly and loving.
You don't know if that little baby was deliberately abandoned. He clearly needs affection and protection. Just don't get too sentimental about his being a little girl's lost kitty and let that cloud your judgment. I think his coming to you was his selecting you to be his mama.
Sadly, keeping found pets is the reason many don't make it back to the people missing them. I have always made some kind attempt even when I knew the odds were against it.
You want them turned into a kill shelter instead where, if they're not chipped, they either are put up for adoption or euthanized? You have no idea if "the people missing them" really do. Most are abandoned with the excuses of:
1. too many pets already
2. my landlord won't let me keep it
3. allergies
4. new baby
They never say:
1. I'm dumping my girl (boy) friend's/husband's/wife's/child's animal to punish them
2. It's too old and gonna die soon and I want a new pretty young model
3. My unspayed animal - because I'm irresponsible - had a litter and nobody wanted to take any so I'm dumping them
4. School's out and since i'm leaving town, I'll just leave my pet on the streets to forage; it will survive
5. I only used this animal for fighting or a breeding factory and now that it's worn out, I'm getting rid of it
6. We don't want this animal when we move, so we'll leave it here
All six of these examples are pet owners who should be euthanized instead of their pet.
Chip it or be sure there's a collar with ID. Granted, some collars get lost, but I honestly doubt many strays are missing animals. In a year of checking Craig's list almost daily, I've seen maybe 5-10 lost animal posts.
