I had the LI'L ABNER soundtrack long before I ever got the cast album, and actually, when I was cast as Dr. Finsdale in a local production of LI'L ABNER, I heard "Love in a Home" for the first time and realized there were things in the show I hadn't heard before because they weren't on the soundtrack. I immediately went out and found a copy of the Broadway show album so I could get re-educated.

Watched about 3/4 of STAR TREK: GENERATIONS, and there is so much heavy bass in the DTS sound version that things actually fell from the shelves because of the constant vibrations. That certainly didn't happen in years past when I played my laserdisc of the film.

In other news...

I finally made the decision this morning not to take the contract at New Harmony Theatre this summer.  It was a not an easy decision at all.

When I was offered the gig back in January, I was still waiting on word from the contractor in DC on whether or not he would be able to fit me in when Mamma Mia! comes to town this summer.  I never heard back from him, so I assumed that he was just going to use the guys he used the last two times the show was in DC - which was/is totally understandable.  I also knew that Ford's Theatre was not going to work out this spring due to the way the contract - and the pit - was structured for their current show.  So...

When I was in New York, I received a call from the DC contractor inquiring about my availability for Mamma Mia!.  In the meantime, of course, I had already signed on for As Thousand Cheers at New Harmony.  So...

After many, many e-mails, and many more phone calls, I have backed out of As Thousand Cheers.

When I was first approached about the show, I was sort of hedgy since I wanted to stay as close to home right now considering my father's recent bout with prostate cancer.  I was trying to find work that would keep me in and around DC or at least a short shuttle or train ride away from home.  When all my leads panned out, I went ahead and took the gig in Indiana.

Thankfully and gratefully, the director in Indiana is also a great friend, and he gave me his blessing to check back into the other possibilities when those possibilities presented themselves again.  I know I have a spot in the pit for Mamma Mia! in DC this summer, but it may only be on a part-time sub basis, so the money is not really a factor.  I could end up potentially making less, but at least I am guaranteed some work.

My biggest worry came when I realized that my father's first major follow-up is scheduled for May 25.  I would have started rehearsals May 24.  So, in other words, I would have been a nervous wreck during the first week of rehearsals.

It's not that I'm thinking that my father's current prognosis could be reversed, I just want to be close to home if I can since I can.

I will really miss not being able to be back at New Harmony Theatre.  Great people, great staff.  And I even have two of my favorite people cast in the show.  Again, it was not an easy decision to make.  This is only the second contract I've backed out of.  -The first one I broke since the working conditions started to become totally unacceptable.  And, after a few more phone calls, I believe I already have my understudy in place.  They'll be in good hands.

And that's my afternoon rambling for today...

Been there.  Done that.  I already have the Advanced Certificate, "Le Pomme D'Or", posted on my wall.

DR François - J'oublie - Is "pomme" masculin or feminin?

Pomme, put the blame on Eve, is feminine in French! ;)

Yep, that was my "Oops, April Fool's!" LOL!

And here is my Bollywood movie for the weekend...

DILLAGI (1966). I don't know if it is a comedy, drama, mystery, or what...but I do know people will sing and dance. I only bought it because A) It was cheap, and B) I like the leading lady, Mala Sinha.

I am hoping it is a good old fashioned trashy, campy soaper!!

I've been working on my Xmas shopping:

For elmoore:

Quote
Medicis by Herbeau
$67,000

With Herbeau's pricey soaking tub, taking a bath doesn't just involve soap and water--it can drain you of your savings. The French company makes its products by hand. This tub is no exception, taking on average more than 200 hours to complete. The heavy copper exterior goes through an antiquing process, and the metal's patina contrasts nicely with the polished nickel lining. It doesn't come with jets (or bubbles), but the 55-gallon capacity does fit two comfortably, so you can split the tub. Or better yet, the tab.

For Jose:

Quote
Knofe-set
$1,657
Wusthof

For MattH:

Quote
$250,000
German Physiks

The Dutch firm Kharma claims to have made the most expensive speaker system ever: a monstrous $1 million set said to have been custom-created for a rich Belgian. But German Physik has the priciest non-custom speakers around. The Gaudis can reproduce the sounds of individual instruments in a recording, the company says. Plus, with hand-buffed lacquer finishes, they look very cool. Then again, for this price you could just hire the orchestra.

For vixmom (GirlScout Cookouts):

Quote
$10,700
Crown Verity

Crown Verity's island barbecue grill is a far cry from those backyard charcoal buckets. The company bills the unit as the perfect combination of "fire and ice." The five-burner grill is made of 18-gauge stainless steel, which holds in and circulates heat. You can crank the temperature up to 800 degrees in just six minutes, and then cook more than a dozen 12-ounce strip steaks at a time. Down below, a U-Line refrigerator holds drinks, sauces and side dishes. The decks are made of polished Quebec granite, and the wood is Brazilian walnut. The best part? It comes mostly assembled--just tighten a couple of screws and you're ready to go. And that, as they say, is priceless.

You can join the shopping spree at Dollar Store

In my CD player at work (although I haven't started to listen yet):
"Pretty Fire," "Neat" and "In Real Life" by Charlayne Woodard (original cast member of Ain't Misbehavin').  These are three one-woman shows written by and starring Charlayne about her life growing up.  They were recorded live for L.A. Theatre Works.  I got these from the library where I work.

In my DVD player:  "The Incredibles"  I also got this from the library...unfortunately, it's full-frame.  When I buy it, I'll get the widescreen version.

In my VCRs:  I'm ushering for a show, so I have to tape everything:  Passion in concert, "20/20" with Rosie and Kelli O'Donnell, "Battlestar Galactica," "Whose Line Is It Anyway?" and "Law and Order:  Trial By Jury."  The worst part is that THEY ALL START AT 10:00 P.M.!!!!!!!! :o  I actually will have to tape B.G. at the 1:00 a.m. broadcast and my niece will have to tape "L&O."  I have never had a night where I wanted to tape (or watch...but I have to usher so I can't) FIVE things at the same time!!  I have checked and double-checked my VCRs to make sure that I have programmed everything correctly:  all the right times and all the right channels.

If you hadn't corrected him, bk, I would have. Probably my biggest pet peeve of all time is for folks I respect to call Broadway cast albums "soundtracks," and I always try to provide "guidance" when I read or hear that.

True, there have been some shows recorded live, and in those cases I might submit to someone arguing that it was a "soundtrack" even though that really is a film term.

But LI'L ABNER with Edie Adams et al is not a soundtrack.

Thanks bk! If you wouldn't have corrected me, MattH "would have"!

DR PennyO - If you still happen to be in NYC, and you happen to be on the West Side, just keep your eyes open for those kiosks on the corner that are usually filled with those apartment and housing "magazines".  I believe that's how the Westsider gets "distributed".

I'm having trouble getting my WMKV today, so I'm listening to accuradio, their cabaret station, their sub-station, classic cabaret which is heavily focused on Bobby Short today.  Just heard his  FLYING DOWN TO RIO, which I haven't played in years and had forgotten how wonderful it is.

Lots of Blossom Dearie here too.

DRPennyO, look in the phone book for the number of the Westsider office, and call them about a copy.  I'm sure I pass a copy somewhere every day but I don't recall reading one in years.  They used to be available in Citibank lobbies.

They're doing this just now?  I've seen that practice for as long as I can remember, even back when soundtracks and OCRs were a major part of the market!

Like other DRs have stated, it's not so new a practice unfortunately.

I have to say that I was surprised the first time I stepped into a Best Buy, and noticed that they had separate sections for Soundtracks and Cast Recordings.  Most of the time, the filings were accurate, but there were always a few "misplaced" items.  However, I think that had more to do with how the record label and/or distributor labeled the particular CD in question.  From time to time, I would see XXXXX - Original Cast Recording on the "sealing label", and then in small print "File Under Soundtracks" - a bunch of Varese Sarabande albums were labeled that way.  Sometimes a Cast Recording would pop up on their computer screen as "Easy Listening", and, lo and behold, there it was!  -And then there's that very ambiguous category, Vocalists.

The Tower Records in DC still does a fine job of filing Soundtracks and OCRs under their proper headings.  However, the Tower Records in Fairfax by my brother's old place was a model I wish other stores would follow.  They had an amazing buyer for that part of the store.  Lots of obscure items, imports, etc.  And he also stocked the Vocalists section with lots of cabaret artists.  Unfortunately, since Tower has started downsizing some of their stores, they've also started combining the categories in some of their locations.
