OPENING NIGHT
« on: May 21, 2005, 10:45:47 PM »

Well, you've read the notes, you've given the opening night notes an ovation, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home, which will be sometime in the middle of the run.

I just read the notes.  Sounds like a great evening, BK and everyone else involved (except for the girl at the airline counter).

I have no idea who might've been nicknamed Pretzel.

Right now I'm listening to Donald's sparkling and exciting official HHW Broadway Radio Show.  Let me just say that I love Georgia Brown!  I don't have many of her recordings...only cast recordings really, but I love 'em. ;D

As for Frank, not a fan...but he recorded "Good Thing Going" from Merrily We Roll Along and "Send in The Clowns," so he's got points in my book. :)

Pretzel?  Hmmmmm....a DR has that nickname?  Hmmmmmmmm.....  My guess would be Ben - only because he was at the HHW gathering last night, and maybe the subject came up!

DRAT! The Cat.  I think that was the first or second BK produced CD that I purchased many years before I knew BK or HHW was formed.  I was just intrigued by the CD cover and things I had read about the show over the years.

Frank Sinatra....sang so many songs.   And I love so many of the versions of songs he sang - not ALL of course.  But I will choose three from his movies that I really really like with NO reservations:

The Tender Trap
High Hopes
Bewitched, Bothered, and Bewildered

The story of the airline and the wheelchair and the seat exchange is very maddening.  I hope you read the name of the person on the nametag and can report it personally.

Oh what a night. A Four Seasons reference. Or a Dells reference. Take your pick.

Although it was a rainy beginning, the evening went well, as reported. I ended up out with the Scarlet Street fellows at Danny's piano bar until about 1:30. Those cats are probably still going. Then it took forever to get home as the subways were scarce. At Joe Allen's, BK was in rare and wily form, yanking the chain of the German waitress who was well up to the challenge, querying Antonia about her job and why she isn't yet on HHW, stumping me with music trivia...Laughs were had. Laffs too.

My pal works at HIGH SOCIETY magazine which is a magazine for men as opposed to PLAYGIRL, which is a magazine for, well, let's not kid ourselves, men! Anyways, same publisher (no connection to PLAYBOY), and apparently PLAYGIRL had an editor who was going to make the mag more upscale and stylish, eliminate some of the raunch etc. Alas, this did not go over well, readership went WAY down and thus, the ad on mediabistro seeking a new editor. MBarnum!

DR MattH, re: your comments about Il Divo and the Daytime Emmys.

Since I watched the show, I saw why they claimed Il Divo was there.  I just didn't get it.  If they wanted to serenade the women on stage that would have been one thing.

But they cut off the winner of Best Show (not letting her speak period).  Yet they had time to have singers (who are not connected to anything remotely Daytime) and Oscar the grouch (the thing is on till 11pm, i seriously doubt many kids are watching).  Well it just didn't make sense to me.

And agree, I loved the tribute to Bill Bell.  But agree they definitely should have mentioned the passing of Ruth Warrick.

Good morning, all!  I''ve cancelled all plans except for the movie at 3:00; I'm going to lie around, work on some things here, and rest.

Yes, the evening at Joe allen was a lot of fun, and - like our March gathering - a assemblage of some truly wonderful people.

DRJose, were you watching the crew or working the crew?

Never really been a Frank Sinatra fan.

He is not even on my ipod.

I meant to mention yesterday about colorization of film. There was a b & W film that FS appeared in where he I think played an assassin. It is one of those films that is on DVD in a public domain release. Anyway the colorized it and gave him the new nickname of "Ol Brown Eyes"

I should make an addedum to Frank Sinatra. I think he was at his best when he was a band singer. He was amazing, but once he became Frank Sinatra he lost it IMHO

Well, Jennifer, I guess Merv Griffin could have serenaded the ladies (he was a former big band singer), but I suspect they were going for female appeal with four hunks singing to the ladies (and a primarily female audience that watches the Daytime Emmys).

Oscar the Grouch and David Canary both work on daytime TV. The fact that their comedy skit came on past kids' bedtimes is beside the point. The kid audience for the Daytime Emmys would be miniscule.

I read in VARIETY that the Douglas Fairbanks (and the other theater next door to it) are being torn down.

FORBIDDEN BROADWAY: SVU is being moved to 47th Street.

I hear you, DR MATTH.  Today is the Open House for the season of Putnam County Playhouse AND the auditions for the show I am directing I'LL BE BACK BEFORE MIDNIGHT.

Open House is being held a week earlier than usual because God forbid we interfere with the Graduation Ceremonies of ONE of the board members precious children!  So EVERYONE'S schedule is screwed up and people will be confused because the Box Office will be open today - and then closed for ONE WEEK until the opening week of OLIVER! even though usually the Open House marks the beginning of ticket sales for the season - and has for ten years.  Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!

And I purposely selected the audition dates so that they would NOT be the same weekend as the Open House so that they auditions could be promoted separately and wouldn't be held in the middle of the Open House MADHOUSE that includes an OLIVER! rehearsal.  So I will be trying to have auditions with a hundred cars in the parking lot and a hundred rug rats running around with wooden bowls.  Grrrrrrrrrrrrrr.....

Anyway that will be my day.  I am hoping (since I also have a audition session tomorrow evening) that I at least get a few GOOD people that might be right for the four roles!

Frank Sinatra Songs -  When I was assisting with rehearsals for Ella & Her Fella Frank in Richmond a few years ago, I ended up listening to a lot of Sinatra.   More than I ever had up until that time, and I really haven't listened to much of him since then - at least on purpose.  In any case...

I loved "The Coffee Song" - Just a fun tune.  -Is that the proper title?  Or is it something with "Brazil" in the title?

And like DR Michael Shayne - and a lot of other people I found out - I, too, preferred Sinatra's days as a band singer.  The cat could really swing!  *I've also just recently discovered Bing Crosby's swingin' band singer days - great stuff!

And even though some of the renditions may not have been the best, almost of his collaborations with Quincy Jones are tops in my book.
