I've scheduled my viewing of the LOST finale for tonight. I watched last night's CSI this afternoon. It was an episode that featured George Eads and was quite entertaining. This must have been an early in the season episode since George's hair was still very closely cropped. I had never seen this episode before.

That's funny about the name Jinx. I did FOREVER PLAID for some months, and even though it's one of my all-time favorite theatrical experiences (both as a performer and as an audience member), the name didn't ring any bells (a Kander and Ebb reference) until bk mentioned it earlier.

DRJRand 54, I make no claims to authentic opinions, I just don't think you should claim to hate a person you don't know. I may hate the work of someone I don't know, while liking them personally; and I may like someone's work while disliking them! I mention no names in either example!

I've only once met Jason Robert Brown, whose PARADE I liked very much, and I found him quite friendly; I don't feel I know him. My BABES colleague Tom Murray worked with Jason on THE LAST FIVE YEARS, and he likes Jason and his wife immensely. I'm not sure I'd say that either Adam or Jason produces "inane" work, because I think they're both too intelligent for that. Clearly, you're not a fan of their writing and that's fine by me, but I question anything "inane" about FLOYD COLLINS; it was quite stunning and moving.

I'm no fan of either Mr. Guettel or Mr. Brown, based on the few things I've heard (much more in the case of Mr. Brown). I'm sure JRB is very nice, but on the couple of occasions I've had to converse with him, I have not found that to be the case, and I must say that at the Disney/ASCAP workshop where he sat on the panel, he came off as a loud-mouthed egomaniac (although, he WAS an amusing loud-mouthed egomaniac).

I should listen to Floyd Collins - I've only heard a few songs from it (if you can describe them as songs). I've listened to a couple of samples from Light in the Piazza, and they were okay.

Good Afternoon!

Back in Fairfax. The traffic northbound on 95 was surprisingly light. There were a few unexplained bottlenecks along the way, but, all in all, I made the trip in the time it usually takes. The southbound traffic, however... YIKES! I didn't spot any accidents, but it had to be very heavily congested from at least Springfield to Fredericksburg - almost 50 miles! *And according to the traffic reports on the radio, everyone seems to be heading south this weekend. The northbound traffic on the Bay Bridge was very light between 2:00 and 4:00. In fact, the traffic reporter "on the road" was making loops of the bridge - "This is my fourth trip through the toll booths... This is my sixth trip through the tolls booths... There are only 3 cars in front of me at the toll booth..." -What a job!?!?!?

Dear Friend BK, I am quite supportive of my friends, but I know at least two whose work I don't much care for for. I'd never mention them by name; it would hurt their feelings, and I like them.

I've certainly been vocal on this site about several folk I don't like, including a post I deleted yesterday about one of your After the Ball confreres!

Steve and I ended up at Stella's for lunch. Neither of us had been back there in while - and it's basically "our" restaurant. We both had the lamb burger for lunch. The burger came topped with grilled prosciutto and goat cheese. Quite tasty! And then for our "cake", we split a very generous serving of tiramisu.*

I also peeked into the kitchen to say Hi to Stella and exchange big hugs. She's doing well, and smiling as always. However, she will be taking a good chunk of time off later this summer for knee replacement surgery - possibly double-knee replacement. -Just like Edwina had last summer. -And it was at Stella's original location that I met Edwina. In any case... It was great seeing here again. *And I have a feeling that Stella had something to do with the generosity of the serving of tiramisu.

It was a very nice birthday lunch, and Steve will be coming up to DC sometime in the next few weeks, and we'll probably head to the Carlyle Grand to have a proper birthday dinner. -And the Flourless Chocolate Waffle for dessert, of course!

I just happened to check out the new-ish playbillarts.com a few minutes ago, and came across the news that pianist, Ruth Laredo, has died.

Ms. Laredo's recordings of the complete Rachmaninov piano works and the Scriabin piano sonatas provided me with many hours of listening and wonder when I first started studying piano. And the fact that she was among the first pianists - man or woman - to record the complete works of either composer was something of a landmark at the time. She also made frequent visits to Richmond for the summer concert series at the University of Richmond.

When Sony finally released her Rachmaninov recordings on CD a couple of years ago, I made sure to purchase the complete set. They may not be considered definitive renditions, but very musical and intelligent. When I travel back to Richmond next week, I will be sure to pull her Rachmaninov discs out of storage.

No can do! I am using NO pain meds. Have not since the morphine of the first two days - except for a couple for minor headace and back pain.
30 years in the classroom - pain is me. Thank you for the thoughts.
Really have only minor discomfort - because I need to sleep on my back.

DRSWoodyWhite, I ran out of Vicodin today, so I'm going on to Tylenol with codiene. The pain does seem less today, but I've got the Tylenol handy in case.

TOTD: We watched "The Prime Of Miss Jean Brodie" last night. As with the video, the DVD does not have the song "Jean". It was heard in the trailer. I assume that it was just used as a playout in the cinemas. I think the same was so of "Alfie" with Cher's version in the USA and Cilla Black's in the UK & OZ.
It really was a cheat back in the sixties.

Speaking of House of Bamboo - after finishing it last night, I started watching Street with No Name. I'm sitting there thinking, gee this plot seems familiar... Then I realized that it was remade as, wait for it, House of Bamboo.

Well, this is very vexing, DR TomovOz!!! The song "Jean" was nominated for the Oscar for Best Song. And I'd always thought the Academy required that the song be a featured part of a film to be eligible.

I have to wonder what it's all about (, Alfie???) that the song has somehow disappeared.

I've "Googled" the issue and most references call the song the "title song." And it seems to me I remember a title vocal.

A possibility is that the song was a separate element from the ones they've used to issue the film on home video...something that has either been damaged or which the studio had to remove because it didn't have video rights to the song.

Whatever the reason, it's very vexing, indeed, because it mars the history of the film. I wonder if our very own, and BK's dear friend, Nick Redman (or Bk, himself) could shed some light on this issue for us.

Indeed Ron - I thought maybe the video release had just cut the "playout" at the film's end. I was quite disappointed when the DVD did not have even a few bars of the lyrics - yet the "Extra" included used the song over the trailer.

I was always amazed that "My Wishing Doll" from "Hawaii" was ever nominated. My search for a copy of that song continues.

I can't remember where "Born Free" was used - over the end credits I guess.
