LISTLESS LISTENING

Well, you've read the notes, the notes were listless and yet listened, and now it is time for you to post until the listless listening cows come home.

DR JohnG, after mangling that complete recording of Naughty Marietta to fit onto one CD, I'm curious to see what Harbinger leaves off the Rose-Marie recording.

I actually have a bootleg of the unreleased Rose-Marie recording. I did not work on it. Its leading man is my former best friend and Wanda, the Indian temptress, was sung by my goddaughter's mother.

It was the first complete recording of the score, rather poorly conducted - he mangles the title song - and I prefer the RCA recording of excerpts with Julie Andrews.

In all the tributes to Sidney Poitier, I have yet to hear anyone mention Porgy and Bess.

I have decided to stay home for the next few weeks. I'll watch church on zoom, and the only other meeting I have scheduled will probably be done by zoom, as well.

We've done it before; we can manage another couple of weeks.

What a treasure trove of photos in the notes, considering that BK didn't even know about them. I could only wish that any of my relatives could come up with something like that.

Actually, one did, not long ago. Back in the late 50s and through the 60s my uncle was shooting Kodachrome slides on a pretty good Kodak camera. I have no idea what happened to the many dozens of rolls he must have shot, but on a visit to their house a few years ago, he dug out the last couple dozen of them which I brought home and scanned for him. A few of them, for me, were like buried treasure unearthed -- photos of my own family and them on one of their visits to us in Fort Lauderdale around 1963. Stunning, natural color, and everyone looking, well, alive.

Okay, it does feel like a Sunday. Which is just fine, because tomorrow will feel like a bonus weekend day. And it's a sunny one which I'll be enjoying by staying indoors and working on How to Succeed.

In all the tributes to Sidney Poitier, I have yet to hear anyone mention Porgy and Bess.

Late yesterday I saw somebody post a little compilation video of it from the worst quality bootlegs imaginable. Of course those horrid bootlegs are all we have unless and until someone manages a restoration.

It's such a tricky subject, what with Poitier having disowned it and with Preminger's concept being so weird, with the static camera setups and all. It's amazing to remember us being able to just go out to see it in 1959/1960.
